Do they prescribe it with BMIs of 28?

I tend to be a fairly active person, but thanks to my newly diagnosed skin condition, exercise has become very difficult (I sweat too much!) That's normally how I control my weight, but I'm dreading I'll just pile up the pounds without the exercise. Will they prescribe it if say my BMI is of 28? That's me for reference as I know they ask for photos

Unless you have a weight related health condition the answer is no. The cut off is a BMI of 30. They will need a photo of your scales not just of you.

Would my ethnicity be taken into consideration? According to the NHs because of my ethnicity I'm actually obese!

There's also a family history of type 2 diabetes (DM) and hypertension (DF)

You need to check with the online doctors prescribing to see. We can’t say for certain. I thought medical conditions related directly to the patient rather than family history.

StormingNorman · 01/07/2024 20:10

30 is the cut off, although once you’re on it you can stay on it as you lose weight.

I can’t remember if the initial consultation (questionnaire) takes ethnicity into account. You could try a couple?

Otherwise, visiting private GP would obviously give you a more personalised consultation where more factors can be taken into consideration.

Very unlikely.

WannabeHealthier · 02/07/2024 06:38

The medication is for treating obesity not to lose weight. It’s all about hormones so if you don’t have obesity, it’s not appropriate for you. You look great btw, I would be very happy with your figure

Nellodee · 02/07/2024 06:43

I’m in a similar boat, op. I think if I put on about 9 pounds, I would qualify. I have to battle to stay the weight I am and sometimes wonder if I should just give up and then get a prescription. But it seems really wrong somehow to gain weight for this reason, and what if I couldn’t tolerate the side effects and was stuck with another half stone that was almost impossible to shift?

I was once obese too! At my highest my BMI was 33, before that my BMI was 28 for as long as I can remember. I lost it through exercising, and I control my weight that way, so if I can't workout as much because of my skin, I thought the injections could b a good plan B.

Could you swim as a form of exercise? Excessive sweat won't be noticed so much and you could keep hydrated with a water bottle?
That might help you not gain weight and give you the mental 'buzz' of exercise.
From your photo you don't look overweight, but it's an awkward angle to see 100% correctly.

Unfortunately chlorine is bad for my skin too :( I'm aware I currently don't look huge but I know without being able to exercise regularly I eventually will.

Are you not allowed to exercise for health reasons or are you just concerned how you will look sweating?
I doubt they'll prescribe based on how you might look.

CatMumSlave · 02/07/2024 07:47

You don't look overweight

fourelementary · 02/07/2024 07:50

It’s not really possible that only not exercising will make you gain weight. You need to pretty much have more calories coming in than going out to gain weight. So get some dietary advice and set yourself a calorie deficit to stick to and you will lose weight. You can do walking and Pilates etc without sweating which would also help.

JanefromLondon1 · 02/07/2024 07:52

You need to sort out your diet. This is what causes you to be overweight not exercise.

I'm not allowed to exercise because of the type of psoriasis. The sweat exacerbates it.

Have you thought about weight lifting. You can do it at home so can take breaks to cool down between reps?

I kindly disagree. I've been on the same diet (or type at least which is very much a version of calorie counting) and the periods when I don't run I gain weight. I start running (or doing cardio) and I lose the weight I gained. I haven't changed what I eat in the past 8 years.

I do that too (as well as cardio) but I swear too :( the only things that doesn't make me sweat are yoga and pilates.

@chatenoire have you asked your doctor what sort of exercise they would recommend with the condition you have?
What about something like Floor Barre - that works muscles and uses up calories but doesn't cause sweating as much as more energic sports?
If you really cannot exercise then I think you will have to be more targeted in your approach to food, if you don't want to put on weight. I feel like there are ways you could manage this before looking toward the apparent inevitable weight gain and medication route.

Tickledtrout · 02/07/2024 09:44

Yes they do ask about ethnicity and the cut off is 28 bmi for certain categories due to known health implications.
Photo in close fitting clothes - think gym wear or skinny fit top and shorts. They want to see your lumps and bumps

The suggestion was to have "brisk walks" but that doesn't rise my HR enough. They're good from a cardiovascular POV but not from a weight control side.

That's just the sweat from my headband during a 20min ride.

I think my skin condition is definitely caused by stress, so I'll try to go that route first, rather than the "you're unlucky and your sweat makes it worse".

Do they prescribe it with BMIs of 28?
