Mounjaro, end of the journey

Justkeeprollingalong · 28/06/2024 07:21

I've had a very successful weight loss with Mounjaro - in 10 weeks I've lost 22lb. I've 6lb more to go with 2 x 7.5ml doses left in my current pen.
I'm thinking one more pen. I will probably go for the 10ml.
Has anyone come off Mounjaro?
Did you use the last pen to gradually reduce the dose or did you go 'cold turkey'?
If you reduced, how did it actually work with the pen?
Also how quickly did the appetite suppression wear off?
Thanks

My BMI is 40 and I've been on it for a month (lost 3kgs, could have been more). I've had no side-effects and it really does help to quieten the diet-destroying cravings. I'd say go for it!

I’m being forced to taper down by Pharmacy2u even though I’m still 16 lbs away from my goal weight, which would still put me right in the middle of the healthy weight category for my height. They made me send a full body photo. I’m a bit disappointed honestly but understand they want me to be safe, but I’ve lost weight slowly and steadily since the start of the year, about 40lbs down, so it’s not fast unsafe weight loss. I’m reducing from 10mg to 7.5mg so hopefully I’ll still be able to hit goal weight in the next few weeks. My plan to maintain is gym and intermittent fasting. I haven’t been exercising at all on this medication because I feel nauseous a lot and get lightheaded when I stand up, so probably not that good for me to stay on it long term.

hockeysticks89 · 13/08/2024 07:28

Isn't it better in all instances financially to go up a dose every time you can, and just click fewer times? I've seen conversion charts on Mounjaro Facebook groups. A heavy dose pen could last for ages

The manufacturer says the pens should only be used for 30 days once started. Some people have stretched that a bit (including me - 6th dose at day 36) but I kept the pen in the fridge and was careful with hygiene.
There is a limit to how many partial doses it is safe to take from 1 pen.

What is the reasoning they have given for this?

I'm intrigued, because I'm about a stone from a healthy BMI and also so using Pharmacy2U so I am wondering when this will happen to me.

I guess if I hit a healthy BMI, I would have about 16lb to half way down between 18.5 and 25 BMI (i.e 21.8 ish) but I know I have never naturally sat at that weight as an adult so I was expecting to aim for 23 at the absolute lowest, more likely 24.

sallyanne33 · 13/08/2024 10:46

@Ineffable23 it’s because I now have a healthy BMI and they don’t want me to lose too much weight. A bit frustrating. For context I’m 5’5” and 141 lbs.

Youdontevengohere · 13/08/2024 11:07

What would your BMI be if you lost another 16lbs @sallyanne33 ? I’m 5ft5 and when I was a size 8-10 I was 133lbs

I guess that must mean your BMI is fairly well into the healthy range already, though, right?

I was reading at the weekend and the BMI with the lowest all cause mortality is about 23, so maybe that's why they don't recommend going too much lower than that?

sallyanne33 · 13/08/2024 12:00

@Ineffable23 my current BMI is 23.5. At my goal weight of 9 stone (126 lbs) it would be 21. I’ve not been 9 stone as an adult so that weight may well be too low for my frame but I wanted to give myself some wiggle room in case I do gain when I start eating normally again.

Ineffable23 · 13/08/2024 12:29

Yeah that's fair enough - I'm definitely assuming I'll put on 4-6lb when I stop just because that was what vanished in water weight when I started, so definitely need room for that!

Thank you for your email.

To ensure you can maintain your weight loss and the healthy habits you’ve developed, our prescribers can continue to look to prescribe your treatment for a period of two years after your initial order, even if your BMI is within a healthy range of around 23-25.

This is assessed on an individual basis taking all information provided at consultation and throughout the course of your treatment into account and as always remains prescriber discretionary.

We conduct thorough check-ins to monitor your progress, adjust your treatment if necessary, and address any concerns you may have, ensuring you continue to enjoy the results you have worked hard to achieve.

Unlike certain oral medications, there's no way to taper off injectable drugs like Mounjaro. Your body will naturally filter out the drug over time and instead of titrating down we would look at maintenance doses.

We hope that this information is beneficial to you. Should you have any additional inquiries, please feel free to reach out to us.

Kind Regards,

Gemmah

Thanks everyone for your honesty and experiences on MJ, I've got my first dose coming in the next few days, I'm hoping to do the slow(ish) and steady on the lower dose like some people on here have done. And like you Justkeeprollingalong, I'm with medexpress, so going by your email they will let you (us) stay on a maintaining dose, any idea for how long?

Justkeeprollingalong · 13/08/2024 13:54

I don't know but I'm going to try and find out this week. Will let you know

I’m with Juniper and they tell me that I can continue with a maintenance dose after I reach my goal.

Hi all, I'm at my target weight having a finished my last 10 mg pen. I contacted medexpress about a maintenance dose and it's not a maintenance dose at all. It's staying on the 10 mg indefinitely .

I'm not happy with this, first of all I can't afford it and secondly,I don't want to stay on 10 mg, I do have some nausea and I just want to sort of start getting back to normal. I honestly thought that if I finished on 10mg the maintenance dose would be 5mg maybe.
I'm not sure what to do now. Anyone got any views?

That does sound odd. I’m not at maintenance yet but I was thinking more along the lines of 2.5mg for a few months!

Justkeeprollingalong · 15/08/2024 18:34

@Youdontevengohere me too. But I've now checked a couple of the other providers and they're all saying that the maintenance dose is just to stay on the last dose you were on when you reached target. I just can't afford it and I also don't want to be carrying on with the side effects even though they've not been too bad and I've been able to put up with them whilst losing weight, but also I get a lot of appetite suppression and I don't want to lose any more weight. 🤷‍♀️

It doesn’t seem to make any sense. If I’m currently losing 1kg a week on 7.5mg, surely I’d carry on losing weight rather than maintaining?

Justkeeprollingalong · 15/08/2024 18:37

@Youdontevengohere exactly! It just doesn't make sense to me.

I’m with cloud pharmacy and just reached target. I was on 12.5 and ordered a 7.5 (I’ve already got a 10).They messaged to check but were happy to send it

HelloVeritas · 15/08/2024 21:44

Can I ask roughly how much it costs per month please? I know various suppliers have discounts but unsure how much a pen costs or how long it lasts?

Thanks

About £150 & you get 5 doses per pen

SilenceInside · 16/08/2024 09:01

@HelloVeritas it's 4 doses per pen, not 5.

There are actually 5 doses in a pen but you can only do 240 ‘clicks’ so the last dose has to be extracted via a syringe or by twisting the pen very hard!

NewLifter · 16/08/2024 09:17

I'm really surprised at that! Have you tried Oushk? Their pharmacist has definitely said you can drop back a dose or two for maintenance.
