Mounjaro general question - can you lead a normal life?

User364837 · 24/06/2024 12:16

Thinking seriously about mounjaro.

just wanted to get a sense from those who are on it - do you feel like you can lead a normal life? Or does it dominate your life and your thoughts? You have to manage side effects carefully and feel like you’re “on a diet” forever?

id reached a point where I never wanted to diet again as it always becomes in a restrict and binge cycle.
but still I’m over eating, binging (it’s quite sensory seeking for me, I think there’s neurodiversity at play).

I want to minimise the risk of my life being shortened because of being overweight and not being here for my children.
BMI is currently 34.

can you eat intuitively like a “normal” person who has a good relationship with food?

or not

I think it's the most normal life I've had while losing weight. I don't say no to going out for meals etc. I still go, have a normal life, but eat and drink less and still lose weight. When I've been on diets in the past I would avoid going out /socializing etc, as the temptation to drink too much and eat too much was strong. Now I don't feel that temptation, so can do these things but not over eat or drink too much.

I think though that the effects can be quite powerful. Whereby you struggle to eat at times. Also, if you get some side effects they can be a bit annoying. But generally if on the right dose, you can be on it and feel fine.

I'm on Wegovy rather than Mounjaro. Really enjoying NOT thinking about food all the time. I still sit and eat with other people I just eat a lot less and usually better choices. No-one has even noticed. I've lost nearly 4 kg with the first three injections and I've had no side effects. I bloody love it.
Honestly my only concern is keeping this up when I stop having the injections.

Fairly early on for me so hard to say, but the coaching has been really helpful from voy. I've found it much more helpful than the usual fat club (slimming world) vibe of sitting in a room and taking about why June gained this week and how she's upset despite eating a whole cake and a bottle of wine at the weekend!

I'm tempted to swap to something cheaper, but I think the expense is actually something I need to keep me motivated! I probably will swap, but going to get the most I can from the coaching for now.

I've done the highly annoying thing of sticking my discount code incase you want to try it through them, apologies!

I'm just about 4 weeks into taking Mounjaro and feel I still have the same life, only better as I'm losing weight!

With regard to eating out you can still do that. It's just that I have become one of those people who order a salad or the healthy small portion, instead of the biggest, fattest burger with all the sides. And I'm happy to do so. I do t ever feel I'm missing out on not having anything. I honestly just do not fancy that type of food or snacks now.

At home I will sometimes have the same as the rest of the family, just a much smaller portion and say no to carbs if possible. Other times I will just do myself a chicken salad for example.

This is the first diet ever where I have not felt like I'm missing out on food.

I've lost 1 stone so far and can now walk up my stairs quicker and with no knee pain. And my jeans needed to be pulled up constantly when out for a walk yesterday. It's amazing how good it is working for me.

User364837 · 24/06/2024 14:21

Thanks all, really good to hear your experiences

i ideally want to be someone who can be controlled and overall not that fussed about food but would feel sad if I could never derive any pleasure from food or alcohol again.

I really like not owning scales (although clothes getting tighter doesn’t lie 😆) so I suppose the first thing is to order some as I probably can’t order without knowing my weight accurately

I’m two weeks in and it’s really the strangest experience. I simply don’t get food cravings (noise) it’s all switched off. I feel hungry sometimes but not ravenous where I would eat anything, more hungry and I have to force myself to eat something. Its therefore much easier to pick something healthy as you actually don’t fancy anything.

it makes you feel like food is a fuel only and therefore why have a fatty, calorific food when you are just as satiated with healthy, low calorie
options.

I have to consciously make sure I am eating at least 1200 calories a day, lots of protein and exercising to keep my muscle tone strong.

one final positive, no wine cravings either!

User364837 · 24/06/2024 14:39

But…. Can you still appreciate lovely flavours and the sensation of delicious quality nutritious food? Or is it all just a bit meh?

Im leading a completely normal life. In terms of food dominating my thoughts, this has never been less the case than it is on MJ. I can still enjoy nice food (and I’m a massive ‘foodie’), but I eat a normal sized portion and stop, and then don’t think about food again until next meal time.

ThirdStorm · 24/06/2024 14:44

In the early weeks I found MJ maybe dulled my sense of taste so previous favourites weren't as delicious to me (at the time I did have a sickness bug so maybe it was that and not MJ?!), however now I'm thoroughly enjoying the food I do eat, and feeling full so I know when to stop and not keep going!

Hannahthepink · 24/06/2024 14:45

I think that this is the most 'normal' I've ever felt in regard to food! I assume that this is how people without disordered eating feel all the time.
I still enjoy the taste of food, and look forward to eating something nice. The difference for me is that I will eat some chips, think that they are delicious, and then actually realise that I am full and just... stop.
I do find that I need to plan or prep food in advance, as I find it quite hard to think about food and make decisions. It's quite hard to describe, but I will just not think about lunch, then stand in front of the fridge at 2pm with no inspiration whatsoever.
I eat with my family, I just eat less. If anything, I enjoy the food even more as I'm not just shovelling it in as quickly as possible.

@TerfTalking I am not the OP but does Mounjaro help reduce wine cravings? I love a glass or two of wine and tbh I think this is where a lot of my excess calorie intake is from.
I am ordering Mounjaro tomorrow, sick of being overweight.
This thread is making me more certain of my decision! X

It has reduced mine. I used to have a glass or two most nights, but have only drank on one occasion since starting MJ 5 weeks ago (and I’ve lost 16lbs).

ObsidianTree · 24/06/2024 15:49

You can still enjoy alcohol, but the craving to drink until drunk goes away, so you aren't interested in keeping on drinking so you can get drunk. so you appreciate for the flavour, but then can stop after one.

Re enjoying food, I think for me the enjoyment of flavour isn't as present as it was before. So I can be eating something I used to think was amazing and tasty, but it no longer has the same enjoyment like it used to. I might start finding things too sweet for example, or too salty, too greasy. So I'd eat a bit and think that's enough and stop eating it.

Silvesterthecat · 24/06/2024 16:49

Of course it’s a totally normal feeling. I think it feels like I’ve wolfed down a humongous Christmas dinner when in reality I’ve had half a portion of dinner and then I can’t eat anymore. And the the weight falls off!!
My biggest problem was dunking chocolate biscuits in tea 🤣 and now I just don’t fancy one

RunningAndSinging · 24/06/2024 17:37

I still like the taste of food and mostly life is normal but without the not normal binges. There have been some occasions when I have been a bit embarrassed as I haven’t made much dent in a meal out at a restaurant or as a guest in someone’s house. DH knows he is likely to get seconds and we swap plates hopefully without too much fuss.

Yes! I love wine, dry rose, sparkling, white, red, all of it.

i haven’t had so much as a thought of it for two weeks. If I’m being totally honest I cannot remember when I last went longer than two weeks without a glass (and more).

I don’t walk in the house now after a stressful day and reach for the corkscrew, it just isn’t on my radar.

its very liberating. Good luck, and come over to the Mounjaro pages on MN where you will f8nd masses of information and a really supportive group of users.

Yes! I still enjoy food, I just don't obsess about it. Barely any side effects either. Honestly if it were safe and affordable to be on one of these for the rest of my life I would do it. I feel like a normal human.

Lampzade · 24/06/2024 18:06

My mother is on Mounjaro and she says the same as others that she no longer thinks about food .
She was fifteen stone at only 5ft 2. My siblings and I were extremely worried about her .
She has tried every diet going and this injection is the only method that has worked for her
She has been on Mounjaro for two months and has lost two and a half stone.
She eats pretty normally, but no longer snacks and her blood pressure is now normal.
This injection has received a lot of negative press , but in my mother’s case it has given her back her life , for which I am eternally grateful.

ClonedSquare · 24/06/2024 18:28

I live a much more normal life on Mounjaro than I did before. I've had no side effects except feeling fuller for longer and having no food noise in my head. I actually can get on with my life without being constantly hungry and always thinking about food even when I'm meant to be focused on other things.

If I want to eat out at a restaurant, l'm able to (I just might leave a little of my normal sized portion on the plate) don't have any side effects after. If I'm out for the day with my family, I just turn down anything I don't fancy. If I feel "pressure" to eat, I can.

PonyPatter44 · 24/06/2024 20:39

I love food, and wine. I am a foodie, cooking is one of my hobbies (as is eating, which is why I'm here!). I still enjoy cooking, and I still enjoy really good food - but I just don't eat so much. I'm not snacking between meals, I'm not eating piles of food, but I'm not feeling deprived either. If I make potato dauphinoise for dinner, I'll still make it with cream, and garlic and cheese, and all those good things, and I'll still have some, but it'll be a much smaller piece.

I have had a glass of wine at the weekend as well, but only the one. Before MJ, I could easily have sloshed down the whole bottle on Friday night, and then another one on Saturday. Now it's literally one glass, and I'm done.

You don't have to deprive yourself of anything on MJ, it just helps you eat in moderation. It's really amazing.
