Can I take this if a previous med made me ill?

A strange request.

Please tell me your worst experiences with this medication.

I have been put off as I tried Saxenda for a week and on the lowest dose, I thought I was feeling fine, but one night I woke up and was so incredibly ill, I stopped immediately. (In that week, I had to remind mysekf to eat.)

I mean I was quite frightened how ill I was. I thought I had pancreatitis or something.

However, I have since packed on another stone and I think I might need blood pressure medication now.

I wouldn't be looking at this if I wasn't desperate.

I realise that I could pay £300 and find myself being unwell again. But I genuinely cannot see how I am going to shift this weight. I had previously considered bariatric surgery. I am very short so being four stone overweight is significant. I'm like a bloody sphere on legs.

As this is the injections board. I hope you will understand. I am pushing 50, but I've been overweight for as long as I can remember.

what's the most common bad experiences? Can you take anti nausea pills if that's a problem?

I don't want to look at the manufacturer publicity etc for stats as I think they play it down.

It's a different drug from saxender so worth a try.
I was sick a couple of times after eating too much fat. I had diarrhoea fairly regularly. I'd usually have a day or two of nausea each week. You can take meds for the nausea if you want. It made me pretty tired.
It was worth it.

RoundandSad · 15/06/2024 19:34

@AhBiscuits thank you
but how do you manage regular diarrhoea at work or on the commute? That's already sounding scary.

and how long did those side effects go on? Are you done taking it now?

It wasn't so bad that I couldn't make it to a loo in time and was only bad for a month or so.
I'm off it now but took it for 7 months. I was tired with occasional nausea regularly throughout this time.

RoundandSad · 15/06/2024 19:45

@AhBiscuits thanks

I could manage tiredness but having to excuse myself from meetings etc often, that's a problem, and the train doesn't have a working bathroom quite often. Would Immodium have helped, do you think?

forgot to say, I tried berberine and that gave me stomach cramps within a couple if days.

It probably would have, I didn't try it. It was predictable in that it would happen 2 days after taking the jab. You could see how you react and then choose a day to take it when it's most convenient. Like take it so that the worst day falls on a weekend or a WFH day.
You might not have much in the way of side effects, some don't.

ClimbingMounjaro · 16/06/2024 07:29

I, unfortunately was really ill after just one dose of Mounjaro. I had to take 3 days off work. Diahorrea, cramps and extreme wind! A massive waste of £150 as I didn't dare take it again as couldn't risk being off sick again a week later.

Perhaps if I worked from home I'd have persevered, maybe...

SuperSange · 16/06/2024 07:52

I was awful on saved, but have had no side effects at all from mounjaro. This is common amongst users I know.

SuperSange · 16/06/2024 08:00

Saxenda 🙄

Skybyrd · 16/06/2024 08:07

I started taking it 3 weeks ago and my side effects have been feeling very cold, mild constipation and tiredness, which are all manageable and are becoming less as time has gone on. I have been very careful to avoid fatty foods, drink loads of tap and sparkling water (4l a day) and eat a lot of good protein. I also don't eat any UPFs (they gave me bad digestive problems even before Mounjaro), so that might help reduce any side effects.

The only time I've felt nauseous (I wasn't actually sick) was one evening after eating some crisps earlier in the day. That also gave me a bad 2 day headache, so I haven't eaten fatty foods since then.

I eat fish, meat, eggs, high protein plain yogurt and quark, lots of beans and chickpeas (they're cheap and money is tight lol), loads of veg and small amounts of good carbs. Any baked goods, including bread, are home made (by me) or I do without. My DH eats UPF foods without any issues, but I just can't.

I'm 56, menopausal and short and I've already lost over a stone. I'd say try it, maybe try to book some days off work at the start or arrange some work from home days, if possible.

After 7 weeks on mounjaro I have an infected gall bladder. Unsure if related but haven't taken it this week.
Unsure how to proceed as just bought a 7.5 pen at 180 pounds!! Heath more important than wealth though.

Never want to feel that pain again.

What were your symptoms op?

RoundandSad · 16/06/2024 10:03

Thanks for the answers everyone

@ClimbingMounjaro I can see that happening to me - I react badly to most things.

@Sunshineandrainbow I'm really sorry to hear that you have a gallbladder infection. I hope you recover asap. What's the treatment? From everything I've read, Mounjaro seems linked?

On Saxenda, I thought I was okay, but then a week in, I just felt a bit off before going to bed. Then I was so ill in the night I thought it was pancreatitis. My body was clearly rejecting it so violently, there was absolutely no way I was going to take it again. That moment of lying on the floor and wondering if I needed A&E remains with me.

I have thought it over and I realise I'm not prepared to take the risk. I'm going to have to find another way.

That sounds like the right decision for you. Your experiences with Saxenda sound horrific!! I'm glad you're okay now and I hope your weight loss plan goes well.

Just to be aware though, gallbladder issues are linked to weight loss so it's something to be aware of, so you can seek treatment promptly if needed, whatever weight loss method you choose. I haven't heard that there is a higher incidence of them linked specifically to any weight loss drug, just that the more and faster you lose weight, and the more fat you eat, the higher the incidence of gallbladder issues. Some weight loss surgeons routinely remove the gallbladder at the time of surgery, just for this reason.

Like you I'm also very sensitive to drug and treatment side effects. (I had almost every possible side effect from my cancer treatments some years ago, even though I deliberately avoided knowing what the side effects were beforehand, in the hope that I wouldn't get too many of them.)

I did lots of reading and research before starting Mounjaro, read all the clinical trials and tons of anecdotal evidence about it, and about other GLP1 drugs in detail, as well as the differences between the different drugs, so I know a fair amount about it. I've been lucky with side effects so far, but it doesn't mean that won't change today, tomorrow or at any time really, for any of us, so your decision to avoid the drugs is totally understandable.

dunkdemunder · 16/06/2024 14:33

@RoundandSad it's unusual for you to have had such a strong loss of appetite to the initial starting fuse of saxenda. Most people feel only a little effect until the fuse has been increased. The starter dose is really just to ease yourself into it.

If it had such a strong effect that you had to remind yourself to eat, and you felt as sick as you did, I really don't think Mourjano would be a good idea. It works on TWO receptors but just one like Saxenda does so it's stronger and good for people who haven't found saxenda has been particularly effective.

I think this is not going to be the solution for you I'm afraid
