Starting Orlistat today

Finally had a GP appointment to discuss my weight loss (or lack of!) and I've been prescribed Orlistat.

Has anyone taken Orlistat before and can share some do's and don'ts? I've been trying to lose weight for 18 months now, counting every calorie, going to the gym and I'm a stone heavier than when I started, so I'm really hoping this helps 🤞

Hi, I’m on week 3, I lost 8lb in the first 2 weeks! I’ve had the dreaded orange once after eating out at zizzi’s I thought I made sensible choices but was still caught out! I feel much better too, and much slimmer. My work clothes are no longer cutting me in two 🤣

Statorli · 10/05/2025 13:37

Just taken the first one and feeling a bit apprehensive. I left it with breakfast because I worried it might be too close to the contraceptive pill this morning. Is there any specific guidance on leaving a gap either way to make sure it's still effective?

Hi, how are yous getting on? I’m on week 8 and 1 stone 5 down

ToniG1111 · 21/07/2025 15:53

Hi all
Can I jump in also?
I just saw a mum friend at school and she's been taking orlistat she didnt say how ling for though, and omg, shes lost 3 stone and looks fantastic...it's encouraged me to give it a try...but like everyone else....im a bit scared of the side effects😧
Do we have to go to our Dr's in regards to taking it or can we go it alone, as my Dr is pretty crap and I wont get anywhere with her.
If I can go it alone I will take the leap of faith.
I need to lose around 4-5 stone total.
Being perimenopausel my weight is an issue and losing it is so difficult.
Also I read that we need to take vitamins as well, us this true if so which ones?
Any advice please.

Hi I’m going to be taking my first one tomorrow morning 😁 so I’m a bit scared but excited at the same time.
im looking to lose a stone which may not sound like a lot to lose to others but to me I have tried everything else .. I’m not classed as overweight and have a BMI under 30 but I have never been 10 stone in my life I am 54 premenopausal I can feel the difference in my weight gain on my knee joints and really feel unhappy ..why is it unless you are classed as obese then there’s not much help out there so have to take this weight journey without the help of my GP? I will let you all know how I get on

Hjcavo · 23/07/2025 13:33

Hjcavo · 23/07/2025 16:50

Hi I’m also starting tomorrow 1st ever 😁 like you I’ve tried everything I’m just sticking with a schedule thanks to chat GPT it’s great give it a go also suggested to take multivitamins

Allseeingallknowing · 23/07/2025 18:33

Is it easier to be prescribed Orlistat by the GP as opposed to the weight loss jabs? Do you have to have a BMI over a certain figure?

Hjcavo · 24/07/2025 15:18

Hi so I asked 2 different Drs before I finally got it on prescription just told them how I have tried everything with my diet and exercise and I am now really getting down as nothing is helping .. also with myself I am battling menopause 🤬 just keep at it and if all else fails you can buy privately .. good luck🙏

purplesmiler · 28/07/2025 09:56

Hey how are you all doing?

I had my GP appointment on Friday and have been prescribed Orlistat. Looking to start today or tomorrow just feel like I need to read a bit more and plan as haven't had much time over the weekend.

Witchywoo41 · 28/07/2025 15:12

I’ve lost nearly two stone in 13 weeks, I would suggest using ChatGPT to track your food and keep your fat in check - good luck x

CornOfCorpia · 28/07/2025 15:19

does this stop other medication absorbing?

MrsForest · 06/08/2025 17:03

I’ve been on it for 8 weeks and have lost 1stone.
GP prescribing 4 weeks at a time.
now delay in prescription! . Worried GP will not prescribe it 😢 but I’m still in the obsese BMI .

Witchywoo41 · 06/08/2025 18:36

@MrsForestthats great, well done!
I got 3 months worth off my dr, I don’t have fat with every meal and I didn’t take it for two weeks as I wanted a break from counting everything and my weight had plateaued. I should be finished my 3 months this week but I’ve still got a month left!

orlimum · 31/10/2025 14:16

Hi..ive been on orlistat for 10 months now and lost 2stone7 but I could have lost more if I stuck to it properly lol

Everything8261 · 19/11/2025 14:48

Is it easier to be prescribed Orlistat by the GP as opposed to the weight loss jabs? Do you have to have a BMI over a certain figure?

It’s the same criteria from the Mhra for all the weight loss meds, but the nhs only prescribes mounjaro to anyone with a bmi over 40 and 4 of 5 weight loss health issues ie high bp. Ie they don’t do the Mhra guidance of 27/30 BMI due to cost. Price is on average 170 - 300 a month. Hence why the nhs can’t widely prescribe yet.

orlistat is available from a gp if you’re over 28 or 30 bmi. It’s price is about 40 a month, and is widely available.

you can also buy Ali over the counter, with no prescription, Ali and orlistat are the same drug, the only difference is Ali is 6o mg and orlistat is 120. Although you could double up I guess on Ali and have the same effect, just it would cost you more, although still a fraction of the cost of weight loss injections,

orlistat has a terrible reputation obviously due to the gastro issues ie people shitting themselves if they eat too much fat, and anal leakage of oil, which is why it doesn’t have much uptake and is obviously so much cheaper, but if you can ensure you don’t eat too much fat, then it would help you lose weight, not so much from the fact it absorbs fat, but also the fear of toilet accidents.

hello how are you all doing, are any of you still taking it?
