Why do we have that tradition anyway?

Am being matron of honour for my friend next week and just realised I probably ought to have something to hand.

Old - my mum lent me her necklace, also counted as borrowed
blue - garter
new - wedding dress

Nevergoogle · 05/04/2010 10:18

I deliberately avoided all religious and superstitious traditions for our wedding. Wearing a horrid blue borrowed vintage grannies garter will not make any marriage any more likely to work.
But i may have been overthinking it.

twinklytoes · 05/04/2010 10:19

don't forget the sixpence in your shoe.

wukter · 05/04/2010 10:26

My "old" will be the silver half crown that my gran and mum both used for their weddings - you know the bit where you symbolise the sharing of finances.

Blue borrowed garter?

New dress?

Something old symbolizes your old life, your own family and friends, it's usually something belonging to your family that symbolizes continuity.
Something new represents the new life you and your new husband make together.
Somrthing borrowed represents the the support of people around you and the help they will offer you through your masrried life. Should be borrowed from a happily married woman, so some of her marital happiness will rub off on you.
Blue I thibk is the colour for fidelity.

How terrible - can't remember what the borrowed thing was, or if there was one ! Had blue ribbon tied into the back of my bouquet and everything I was wearing was new.... can't remember if I had a garter either.

justnally · 05/04/2010 12:15

Old-borrowed-blue : my great grandma's saphire ring (which now does belong to me and is the most precious thing I own)

new : my dress

gorionine · 06/04/2010 17:04

Nevergoogle, I sort of agree with you. If it had to be done again I would probably not bother. I think at the time someone suggested it and I did not question it the way I would now.

my big sister's just offered her cake knife as my borrowed.
i bought it for her as a wedding gift, so it's a lovely gesture.

she's got all excited though because we're talking about dates (haven't got my proposal yet)

nikki1978 · 14/04/2010 16:12

I didn't do any of that. Didn't really think about it and noone suggested it. I don't think it has bought bad luck to my marriage

Evenstar · 14/04/2010 16:31

I had an antique Brussels lace handkerchief with a lace butterfly as old, a gift from a family friend, borrowed my mother's pearls, blue was a blue bow on my garter and the new was everything else. I did have a sixpence in my shoe as well, MIL found one that she used to use in the Christmas pudding.

Stayinthelines · 23/04/2010 19:51

I borrowed a bracelet from my bridesmaid, blue was the name of the perfume I wore. (Light Blue by G & D). New was the dress etc, and old was a necklace from my grandmother.

HeadFairy · 23/04/2010 19:53

Borrowed and blue was a necklace from my mum with a large blue topaz stone pendant, something new was my dress, and something old was me!

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 23/04/2010 19:54

Old - an old coin stuck to the bottom of my shoes.

New - dress, undies, shoes, some jewellery, tiara.

Borrowed - Might have been the coin, not sure.

Blue - ribbon on my garter.
