We're considering take away indian instead of buffet.. would you like it ?

We're getting married next May. Our wedding is already quite quirky, were getting married in a museum and having our reception in an old theatre. Our budget is small.

We are considering using our local indian (who's food is delicious!) to deliver enough curry, rice, naan and bhaji to sink a battleship. They woud bring it in big pans and everyone would help themselves. The quote they have given us is good (£600) and a traditional buffet from a caterer for £600 wold mostly consist of mini quiches and sausage rolls and the thought of that bores me rigid.

I know it's not everyone cup of tea for their wedding but if you were a guest and had to self serve chicken pasanda what would you think ?

Is it a truly terrible idea ?

My 19 month old DD loves curry, as do I and I can't think of anyone I know in real life who doesn't.

Would definitely suggest you have a chicken korma though as it's not at all spicy so should be fine for most. If people really won't eat it then they can fill up on poppadoms, naan and rice - not going to hurt for one meal!

An Ice-Cream Van for puddings??!!! Absolutely bloody fantastic!!! I've been a high level event organiser for over 20 years and I have to say, that's one of the best ideas I've EVER heard.

Love the ice cream van idea. Sounds like a fantastic wedding.

ItsAllaBitNoisy · 25/10/2009 19:49

Yaay! Now where's my hat?

If I were you, I'd do a chicken korma. If you're a curry lover you'll put up with it, if you're a curry hater, you'll eat it.

(Personally, I'd have to be dragged away from all of it )

LyraSilvertongue · 25/10/2009 19:50

In fact, Arsed, if I ever get married I might have to steal your ideas.

Tambajam · 25/10/2009 19:50

Ice-cream van - excellent!
Yes, our prison tray thing was self-serve. Lots of lovely old ladies with a sari end over one arm and a tray in the other.

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 25/10/2009 19:51

The ice cream van sounds fab too

hormonstersnomore · 25/10/2009 19:53

Ooh, chicken tikka masala with pilau rice, poppadoms, peshwari naan, mango chutney & raita, then a 99 with chocolate sauce & sprinkles, pleeese. My idea of absolute heaven.

choosyfloosy · 25/10/2009 19:53

I would absolutely love this, and think I would ask the restaurant to do some plain grilled/baked chicken as an option, and perhaps a plain tomato salad or peas. Then if anyone you suspect of non-curry eating tendencies asks what you are having, you can say 'chicken and rice and some other things we like' and leave it vague. There WILL be chuntering, so be prepared for that - you should have heard my aunts when my cousin had GASP an entirely vegetarian wedding meal, but it was fine of course.

Arsed, my father did this for his wedding for the evening buffet. The restaurant brought big catering size pots of curry, rice etc and served us up. We all queued and the non-curry eaters filled up on rice and popadums. It was great. There was some sort of pudding but I didn't get that far!

Doodleydoo · 25/10/2009 20:02

Oh that sounds so fab, we went to a wedding with take away Fish and Chips and mushy peas - brilliant, it was on the coast so fresh and delicious.

I am the butter chicken queen, but any opporutnity to try a couple of others sounds like the best thing ever and to top it all Poppadums? Fab, and you get the excuse of serving lager instead of wine/champers........genius

And ice cream van for pudding

Haunty27 · 25/10/2009 20:03

Arsed - I'd be really upset if I was offered chicken pasanda at your wedding it would have to be a Dhansak lol.

Seriously would love indian food at a wedding.

Have a lovely time I'm sure your guests will love it. Oh and congratulations.

PurplePoppy · 25/10/2009 20:07

I think its a GREAT idea. I served cold soup as a starter at our wedding and got a few when I mentioned the menu to people. My attitude was "I'd rather have the food I love than some dull option that no-one will hate and anyone that fussy can just fill up on bread" and in fact almost everyone loved it and a lot of people said it was fun to try something new.

Anyone who hates all Indian food can just fill up on rice, naan and cucumber rhita like I used to when I got taken to Indian restaurants when I was very little. Rice and cucumber rhita is yum! And no reason why kids cant eat spicy food. They have to start somewhere, just give them a little bit of gravy with lots of rice.

Can I come??

Haunty27 · 25/10/2009 20:10

I didn't see the bit about the ice cream van!

I'd have a 99 with flake and raspberry sauce. Yum

I've got my hat! See, see,

Fruitbeard · 25/10/2009 20:12

Sounds gorgeous.

Although... I know that my 4 yr old would never, ever ever eat it, even a korma, as she hates rice and things in sauce (weird child).

So it depends on how many children you're inviting to the do and if you can be @rsed to find out what their parents say... we go to quite a few Asian-catered functions and she ends up eating poppadoms and naan bread - won't even countenance a samosa - then complains she's hungry - I've taken to feeding her up before we go and taking a cereal bar in my bag for her, but it's useful to know beforehand iyswim - are you putting it on the invite...?

PurplePoppy · 25/10/2009 20:13

Oooo me too...I just saw the icecream van bit. Genius!!

Do you live near an Indian area? Maybe you could get someone to come and make fresh jalebis to go with the icecream. Mmmm....

wheredidiputit · 25/10/2009 20:14

I think as you let your guests know in advance then i don't see the problem.

I personally don't like indian but if i know in advance i would arrange to get something different for myself. Where as this would be DH dream wedding

Arsed · 25/10/2009 20:16

I think we'd probably have to as there are 20 odd children being invited, most of them under 2.

OP posts:
thatsnotmymonster · 25/10/2009 20:16

We would love it! I think if you stick mainly to the mild curries you should be fine.

I don't think I know anyone who doesn't like any Indian food.

Although my dc's (4,3 and 1) wouldn't eat it but they would be fine with rice and naan and poppadoms!

Arsed · 25/10/2009 20:17

We're in the black country so hugely multicultural.

Never tried jelebis though, is it nice ?

thirtysomething · 25/10/2009 20:24

I'd be delighted to find an Indian selfserve buffet instead of the usual crapbland sausage roll and mini quiche type fayre. At the end of the day your wedding is one of your only chances to make a statement about your tastes etc and if you like Inidian I say go for it! You can always leave out big bowls of raita/plain yougurt/mango chutney to tone down the spiciness for anyone of a delicate constitution....naan bread, samosas etc are acceptable to all IMHO anyway - I always serve veggie samsosas at parties and they always go down a storm!
