We're considering take away indian instead of buffet.. would you like it ?

We're getting married next May. Our wedding is already quite quirky, were getting married in a museum and having our reception in an old theatre. Our budget is small.

We are considering using our local indian (who's food is delicious!) to deliver enough curry, rice, naan and bhaji to sink a battleship. They woud bring it in big pans and everyone would help themselves. The quote they have given us is good (£600) and a traditional buffet from a caterer for £600 wold mostly consist of mini quiches and sausage rolls and the thought of that bores me rigid.

I know it's not everyone cup of tea for their wedding but if you were a guest and had to self serve chicken pasanda what would you think ?

Is it a truly terrible idea ?

I'd LOVE it. I went to an Indian wedding and everyone took a little 'prison tray' and got stuck in. It was great!

MatNanPlus · 25/10/2009 19:13

When we did our 'invite pack' it included the menu (sit down full sunday roasts) and they could state preference for veggie/vegan etc then, Some said which starter/mc/pud they wanted too which did help with numbers but we didn't ask for that as people can sometimes forget what the choose

The chicken & chips (something similar) sounds a good back up tho.

Arsed · 25/10/2009 19:15

was that self serve Tambajam ?

I think we'd have Chicken pasanda, Veg Korma, Lamb rogan josh and Chicken Pathia with pilau rice and plain naan.

the quote we had was also for lots and lots of bhaji & pakora.

about 300 popadoms too.

Yes I'd love it..I'll have Butter chicken, plain naan, 2 onion bhajiis and a pint of Kingfisher please.

MatNanPlus · 25/10/2009 19:17

bibbitybobbitycat · 25/10/2009 19:20

Fab idea. Best wedding I ever went to had a curry buffet. And my best friend's 40th which she had at home, also curry from local Indian. Everybody loved it.

TrickOrTreatersDragOnYourNoose · 25/10/2009 19:21

No because I hate curry.

Arsed · 25/10/2009 19:22

All curry ?

BarakObamasTransitVan · 25/10/2009 19:22

Can I come?

CybilAviationAuthority · 25/10/2009 19:23

Love your name Barack..Shooting stars?

ruddynorah · 25/10/2009 19:23

indian is GREAT for veggies! my only reservation would be the queueing thing too. really annoying when it's like ok everyone help yourselves!!...and all the big blokes rush to the front and those with kids are left stressing. but if it's table by table you end up pissed off if you're the last table.

would be lovely if you could put a selection of dishes on each table, and then extras on a buffet table perhaps.

TrickOrTreatersDragOnYourNoose · 25/10/2009 19:24

"would people really not go to a wedding if they didnt like the food provided ?"

As I said in my previous post, I hate curry. Can't even bear the smell TBH A friend got married abroad and had a reception in an Indian restaurant when they got home. I ate beforehand and snacked on naan and chips at the reception. Then I pigged out at the evening buffet (not curry!) It was a PITA and not my most enjoyable wedding but [shrug] it wasn't my wedding was it?

Ivykaty44 · 25/10/2009 19:24

what a fab idea - really would be great.

Can I suggest you gget someone to make you a big pan of something hot that goes with rice that isn't curry/indian food

TrickOrTreatersDragOnYourNoose · 25/10/2009 19:25

(yes, all curry. I hate the smell and actually can't eat any spicy food really. My dad hates it too, oddly enough - perhaps it's genetic!)

JANEITEPatrickNormanMcHennesy · 25/10/2009 19:25

Sounds great. Personally I'd say do two meat curries one of which is chicken korma and the other a spicier lamb or beef one, one veggie curry (not veggie korma as that is hideous! - maybe a chick pea one or an aloo gobhi) and a dahl, rice, naan, poppodoms and bhajis plus some mint sauce and salad.

Ivykaty44 · 25/10/2009 19:27

Arsed - ask the indian if you can hire a couple of waiters for two three hours

Or leave it self service and get all the food divided into two so you have two ques which drasticly reduces the que.

make sure the hot ood is on table burners or in bain maries and the food will stay hot for seconds

CybilAviationAuthority · 25/10/2009 19:27

Does anyone else REALLY fancy a curry now?

CantThinkofFunnyName · 25/10/2009 19:31

Whilst Chicken Tikka Masala may be Britain's most popular dish, I think the OPs question was would we like it. I would - my children wouldn't, my elderly relatives wouldn't and in fact, some of my fussy younger relatives wouldn't like it. If the wedding is at 3, eating is at 7 (4 hours without food) and the whole shebang goes on til 11, it is a very long time for people to go without food, if there is no alternative to curry, and in particular, a problem if, as OP states, there are lots of children invited.

I would say again, be prepared to offer an alternative and do let people know on the invites. Those that just wouldn't be able to hack it, will either make alternative catering arrangements - or not attend and then you'll just be left with the happy curry eating friends/family.

LyraSilvertongue · 25/10/2009 19:32

Mmmmm, lamb pasanda.

Arsed · 25/10/2009 19:35

Thats my main worry really cantthink..

OP posts:
CantThinkofFunnyName · 25/10/2009 19:37

I can understand Arsed and I do think the idea is quirky and will probably go down really well with the majority. Why don't you ask the restaurant if they could do chicken & chips as well and then ask your guests on the invites/RSVPs to select their preference - chicken & chips or full indian, so you can guage the catering numbers?

hormonstersnomore · 25/10/2009 19:38

I'd love it, in fact can I come? . I'd especially love the self-service aspect.

As for older people not being able to eat it ("hearburn, etc") I'm sure older Indian people manage to eat it.

ItsAllaBitNoisy · 25/10/2009 19:41

Can I come?

If I were you, simply to stop me worrying about it, I would ask for Chicken gougons (suit kids and oldies) and chips to be available as well.
And have a few stations in the venue so it's not one huge queue.

Have a great day!

Arsed · 25/10/2009 19:41

if they want fish and chips there is a chippy just down the road.

While we're on the subject..

I am think about having an icecream van for puddings.. well not a whole one but you know what i mean.

would that go down well too ?

Yes you can all come. the whole of MN is invited !

One of the most enjoyable weddings I went to was where there was indian food supplied by the local takeaway. Everyone loved it, it tasted fantastic and it was SO much nicer than the usual wedding buffet fodder.

Go for it. It's your wedding, have it how you want.
