Is it normal not to share wedding photos with guests, even when their children are in them?

My SIL got married six months ago, and it was a lovely day. They hired a photographer who took lots of photos, including plenty of the children playing outside throughout the afternoon. She hasn’t shared any of the photos with us, although she has posted some on social media for birthdays and other occasions, so I assume she has received them.

Is it normal not to share wedding photos with guests, even when they include their children? I’d love to see the professional photos of my children, as the photographer was really good and it would be nice to have those memories.

I’ve sometimes wondered whether my SIL and I have quite different personalities, so I’m not sure if I’m reading too much into it. We have the same first name and then the same last name when I married her brother, and there was a slightly awkward moment when I joked about her having a different surname after getting married. It wasn’t a serious comment, and I wouldn’t have minded what she chose to do, but I did wonder at the time whether the joke had been taken the wrong way as she was adamant to me she was keeping her name all the way up to the wedding, when she took his last name, which I’d suspected she would do all along. It just felt like she was being deliberately awkward with me. There have been many many moments like this.

I’m not suggesting the photos have deliberately been withheld from us, as there could be plenty of reasons why she hasn’t shared them. I’m just curious whether it’s usual for couples to share professional wedding photos with guests who appear in them. We had a very small town hall wedding ten years ago, so it’s not something I’ve experienced myself, but I think I’d be happy to share the photos if I were in that position.

Ive never received/given any except to my mum/MIL. My friend recently sadly died so I will go through my album and print off pictures of her for her DC but apart from that I cba.

Ultraalox · 19/10/2026 21:25

I only shared mine with a few people as I honestly didn’t think anyone would be interested. I put them on a website and shared the link. Just ask her?

CharSiu · 19/10/2026 21:43

Friends DD married this summer, all photos banned so only the official photographer. She has seen them but has not even been sent a link herself.

I did that a couple of years ago for a friend's brother who had died. Literally i sent their mum the physical photos I may still have the negatives, but I will never go through them to reprint.

We didn’t share the photo’s. It didn’t even occur to me to do so and nor would I have had time to sit about sharing every photo directly with each guest (I presume you wouldn’t be ok for pics of your kids to be shared with just anyone at the wedding so it would involve contacting everyone separately). Why can’t you or your DH just ask?

Most wedding photographers issue a link and people can buy photos directly. Send the link on WhatsApp and ask people to pass it on. It’s hardly a difficult thing to do. We sent the link with our thank you cards.

Why would you not just ask to have them? I sent my wedding pictures with kids in to the families but it was mainly my best friend group. I didn’t bother with the others but I would happily share if they asked

seahorsessky · 19/10/2026 22:37

I've never known them be shared, but if you were with her after the wedding talking about it (as I'm guessing happened, most brides do discuss it with family for some time after) I wouldn't think it's cheeky to ask if she minds you having a copy? It wouldn't be in any way odd for you to display a photo of her and other members of the family, including your kids, in your house somewhere. A lot of people do have loads of family photos up.
If she doesn't want that, fair enough, but you could still ask her to share and then cut out anyone but your kids, surely she wouldn't mind that?

When my in laws got married, and also my godson, on both occasions I asked for the link to the photographer's website. There is usually an access code too. You can then see all the photos and choose to buy any that you want - for the godson's wedding last year, I could choose the size and either colour or black & white for each one. So I ordered half a dozen online, and they were beautifully printed and then mailed out to me.
They belong to the photographer, so don't expect to just download them for free.

I think this is the issue here. They are expecting the photos for free.

I occasionally wonder if i annoyed anyone with this. When we got married i didnt know any of the ettiquette and didnt give people photoa either. I just showed them to people who happened to drop in in the following month or so.

Notonthestairs · 19/10/2026 23:26

The best way to address this would have been to show a general interest in the wedding photos - and then indicate you’d love to see the ones of the children. You pay polite interest in how the photos turned out, add some general compliments to the wedding party etc and in return she gives you what you really want.

If you can’t manage that bit of fairly straightforward social greasing-the-wheels then I agree your relationship with your SIL is unlikely to progress further.

Moo31 · 19/10/2026 23:44

I have a similar relationship with my SIL who got married 16 months ago and I have just realised after reading this post that we haven't seen any wedding pictures (except the one they used for thank you cards). The photographer was snapping away at my children too but if has never crossed my mind to ask to see them ... maybe I should!

i had to ask my dil

Or you could have just asked your son!

heyyellowyellow · 20/10/2026 00:39

I got married last year and sent the online album link to family and then to close friends who I know would have really wanted to see them. For everyone else, we messaged a note of thanks for attending headed with a photo of us and said within it that if anyone wanted the link, we’d be happy to forward it. No one asked, and that was fine with me!

MeridaBrave · 20/10/2026 07:13

not sure why you didn’t ask to see them?

ithinkthereforeyouarewrong · 20/10/2026 07:24

I guess it depends how it was done. We paid for a flash drive and had the photos we wanted printed/saved which we could then easily share.

FoundAUserNameDownTheSofa · 20/10/2026 07:30

I got some printed and gave them to the various friends and family members that were in them. I’d particularly asked the photographer to take photos of the guests and there were some really nice ones in there.

But come to think of it, no one has ever done that for me when I’ve been a guest even at the cute-DC stage.

LauritaEvita · 20/10/2026 08:32

Yes. Completely normal. I’ve never seen the full album from any wedding I’ve been to, even close family. Can you imagine a bride sending out the full album to everyone? Mumsnet posters would be having a meltdown at the audacity of the bride thinking anyone else is that interested and that she’s had her day in the spotlight and needs to let it go.

It doesn’t really sound like this is about rhe photos though. Sounds like you’ve got a problem with her.

Also other people’s weddings don’t exist as a backdrop for you to get free candid professional pics of your kids- that won’t have even occurred to her.
