Hi, thanks for reading, really need advice. Eldest daughter getting married 8/8/26, went to pick up wedding dress today from tailoring and she hates it! She thinks it’s to tight and sexy looking so cannot bring herself to wear it. Thinking we need to buy ann off the peg ( this weekend if possible and then get it tailored) Any recommendations for bridal shops/outlets where you can buy a dress and take it away that day? We are North Nottinghamshire/ South Yorkshire area but willing to travel further - I love her so much I just want to get this sorted for her and need her to be happy. Many thanks for any help x

My friends niece went to Peggy Bridal boutique in Holmfirth. It’s off the peg and amazing.

Is there no seam allowance? To let out the current dress so it isn’t as tight? An experienced tailor will be able to raise the neckline, add sleeves or straps etc. Without the dress having an „altered“ look

Call round some of your local charity shop chains.
Some have a specific shop they keep all the bridal and communion stuff in.

My dress was from Monsoon. I loved it. I wish you all the best for your daughter and finding the perfect dress x

Mine was from Windsor, at a boutique called Windsor Bride, which sold sample dresses at great reduced prices. I'm not entirely sure if it sold them off the peg as you still had to book an appointment to try on, but I'm wondering if it made the purchase slightly easier as it was a sample dress. Mine was about £400 for a dress normally about 1k.

I got mine from Kitty and Dulcie online. Mine was the Pearly Queen, it was gorgeous, just needed adjusting for my flat chest.

I would go on netaporter and search for white long dresses, if you have a credit card with a big limit, just order all those that look lovely and try then on at home and hopefully there will be one in there to keep.

Rixo

Wed 2 be are great, they are usually quieter during the week which is good because they don’t do appointments . You get around an hour to try on 4 or 5 dresses but if they’re quiet I’m sure you could try more , it doesn’t feel rushed and the sales staff are really helpful in getting the right dress and underskirt right for you .
I got mine from the Bolton branch and took it away the same day beautifully boxed.
The only drawback is if you like a dress and don’t buy it there and then it might not be available next time you visit as they don’t have lots of the same dress .

The Rixo and Whistles ones are lovely.

i bought mine for £20 from Vinted after seeing it on Coast for £300 or so. So I’d suggest Coast.

Does Monsoon still do off the rack bridal? My dress came from there a good few years ago and it was lovely.

Agree, mine came from Monsoon too!

I can recommend Wed2B Rotherham, hundreds of dresses -take away on the day have them tailored or might just fit her perfectly as is .

I'm selling mine on vinted. Lovely dress, not sexy. In Yorkshire.

If she is prepared to wear a dress from last season, Oxfam have some specialist bridal shops. The dresses are brand new, from well known stores, but because they are not THE latest fashion, the stores off load them. You’d be sure to find a bargain if there is a branch near you.

Have a look at Alie Street, either on own website or through John Lewis. My friend has just worn one of their dresses and it was amazing.

There have been some great suggestions upthread.

My friend is a professional dressmaker, she works both independently and for a local bridal store, and she gets very booked up at this time of year. If anyone is considering buying a dress which might need alterations, make sure that you know of someone good who is free to do them in the time available.

@ElSomum , can the ‘tailoring’ be undone by the place who tailored it? They might be able to suggest something which would make the original dress seem less tight and sexy than it does now.

Bubbleybees · Yesterday 08:06

Mine was from ASOS! Next day delivery.

TheGrimSmile · Yesterday 08:18

Those Monsoon dresses are gorgeous. I can never understand why people spend thousands on a dress when you can get a beautiful one for 300 quid.
