Wedding dress is too small and shop didnt take my measurements

Can I please have some advice? Am I in the wrong in any way?
Last year in march I travelled hours to a wedding dress shop where they sold my dream wedding dresses, all went okay, I chose my dress and wanted to order it. When it came to ordering it, the lady didn’t even take my measurements and just said the sample fit me fine. Obviously she’s a reputable wedding dress shop with loads of 5/5 star reviews, I don’t know any better so that was that and we paid the deposit which was more than half of the dress (I don’t know if that’s normal)
3 months later I was asked to pay the outstanding balance, which to be fair was agreed when I ordered the dress but when speaking to other people, apparently this isn’t normal practice and normally the outstanding balance is paid upon first fitting of your dress arriving to shop. I honestly didn’t mind paying it when she asked but there was a lot of chasing from that point about when my dress would arrive in the store. I was told it would be the start of jan, which came around and it wasn’t there, chased again and anyway, the dress didn’t arrive until the march (4 months before my wedding) When it came to collecting the dress, baring in mind I had to do a round trip of 5 hours, she asked me when I could come. I asked her for a Saturday which she said they are far too busy (that’s completely understandable) and asked me to come on a week day. Arranged this with my mum and step dad, who took time off work to come with me, for her to message me and say that can I now come on Saturday as brides have moved around there appointments? And gave me a time slot for if I wanted to just collect and a different time slot to actually try the dress on. I replied and said I wouldn’t be able to do that as my mum and step dad took time off work and anyway she said okay that’s fine just stick to the collection day I had before. When it came to collecting the dress, tried the dress on, it wouldn’t zip up. As soon as she realised this, she asked me if I had put on weight (I haven’t, as I have been weighing myself basically since I’ve been planning my wedding). I actually stood there in the shop and just wanted to cry as I just had enough. The dress was A LOT of money, paid in full 8 months before, took basically a year to arrive to the shop and I had 4 months to go. She convinced me that it would do up with someone strong enough to do it and that was that, I just wanted the dress of me. Came back home, and needed to get the straps and length altered so took it to a seamstress straight away as basically everyone near me was fully booked until September.Went with my mother in law, who when I tried the dress on told me it wouldn’t zip up by a long way. Like even if I lost a few pounds it wouldn’t do up. Seamstress said it’s fine, she’ll add in a bit of material and have corset back. Roll round to today, message off her saying she doesn’t want to do it, she doesn’t know how it will work because of placement of straps etc the dress is too intricate. So I message the bridal shop, not that they can do anything 11 weeks before my wedding and she just said straight away they have the same dress coming in a bigger size next week and I could swap. Sent me the measurements of the bigger size and asked me for mine. I took my measurements and even the bigger size is way off my measurements! So yeah, I’m up all night stressing and panicking. Hopefully can find a seamstress who can do it, if it will even be done. Upon speaking to another bridal shop, they told me that regardless of if I sample dress fit (especially a dress like mine which has a structured, boning top section) measurements should always be took because the sample dress will be a lot more worn and fit looser, where as the new dress will have no give. Just needed a rant and a bit of advice really, am I wrong for thinking the bridal shop is in the wrong? I’m so upset and my experience has been so bad

Under the Consumer Rights Act you’re entitled to either a refund, replacement or repair (assuming you’re outside of the initial thirty days - if not you simply reject it and ask for your money back). Make it clear you’re not going anywhere until one of these things happens.

If you’re in or near Manchester, I have a really lovely seamstress working on my wedding dress that I can recommend, I found her through word of mouth.

I’ve been waiting for over 6 months for the fabric to come for my alterations with no end in sight (I get married in 4 months). She’s been super reassuring and has offered different solutions to fix my dress if the shop don’t get the fabric I ordered in!!

This is such a dreadful shame.
Practically speaking, I'd do a rush to find another dress and sort out the business with the first to the side. Important thing is that you have a dress to wear on the day.
So sorry this has happened.

'she just said straight away they have the same dress coming in a bigger size next week and I could swap'

this doesn't make sense, they have one sample size usually and from then the dresses coming in are custom ordered/made, so if they have another dress coming in then its another brides bought and paid for dress. They can't just swap it for a different size.

Have they mixed the dresses of different brides up and you actually have someone else's smaller sized dress?

“Hi,

Thanks for your message, I am sorry that you are having issues with your dress that must be really upsetting.
With regards to the measurements, it really shouldn’t have been necessary if the sample fit well.
Have the seamstresses touched your dress yet? I am just thinking that I have another dress coming in a size bigger that we could swap because I need another sample size ( the one you have ) for a bride getting married very soon.
I also just want to double check, if you are losing weight please do not lose more as the bigger dress may be too big then!
Your veil has been ordered, I am just waiting on a shipment date.“

I wonder if the shop realise they have cocked up and just 'happen' to have another larger one on the way.

Oh that really does sound like they've mixed up the orders then, and are trying to save face.

Oh yeah. They’ve screwed up and given you the wrong dress and are desperately trying to cover their arse without admitting it. You’ve got the other bride’s dress that they need the ‘sample’ for. Hope you get it sorted.

BoldAmberDuck · 07/05/2025 11:13

I’d hope the exchange one arrives in time but in the meantime start looking around for a cheap one online for an emergency. There’s often loads online and also Monsoon do lovely wedding dresses (they used to but not sure if they still do) my daughter got a gorgeous one for about £400 . Try Vinted? Last resort - crash diet to fit into the one you have though obviously not ideal solution but it sounds like you have spent a lot already if the veil was £300

Could you fly directly to the supplier in Ukraine to avoid all the delays ?

Oh come on!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 07/05/2025 11:17

Crash diet depends on whether you’ve got weight to lose - if you’re already a size 8 losing 4 inches is unlikely!

I really think the shop has mixed up the two orders. They wouldn’t give you the other bride’s dress if they thought it was really hers - then they’d have two furious customers not just one!

Apologies for typo ! Do not know where drinkers came from! Must be on my mind!

It looks like your autocorrect replaced "need" with "drink" .....I make no comment. Except it's not surprising you can't remember your user name.

RandomMess · 07/05/2025 11:30

You need to go back to the shop and give her the opportunity to salvage the mess they’ve made of it. I would certainly ask for a partial refund/discount once you have a dress to wear on your wedding day.

Hmmm… I am in two minds here. I work in the industry and firstly I feel really sorry for you, this is not the experience you need or should have. However, I can see why she chose the sample size if it fit you perfectly. To be honest, sample dresses do not stretch that much as most dresses are man made fibres. So ignore that aspect for the minute. I would ask firstly to retry the sample you originally tried on. If that fits, then you clearly have an issue with your dress that has been ordered in and she drinkers to rectify that. If it doesn’t fit, then that would indicate you have changed, not her fault.
The problem will come if she doesn’t have the sample dress anymore, as she didn’t measure you. There is no benchmark/proof of what you were at the time of ordering.
I would say that you ordered the dress in good faith that it would arrive in time and fit you. It is not your fault she didn’t measure you. However, on the same token it is not her fault if you have put on weight! It’s a tricky one and trading standards ‘I think’ will say there had been a dress supplied in the size agreed at the time of ordering (the sample size-whatever that was).
Go back to the shop and say you want a dress that fits and that you want her to sort it. Unless she has the original sample she cannot prove you have or haven’t changed size so you can say the onus is on her to have the correctly fitted dress. It’s a tricky one tbh. Good luck.

This is great advice. I would do this.

If they have mixed up the orders, it doesn't instil confidence that they just tried to shoehorn her into the smaller dress anyway and sent her away saying that as long as she invites Eddie Hall to her wedding to zip it up, she'll be ok.

Shadowhunter12 · 07/05/2025 11:42

Can you take your dress back and compare its measurements to the sample dress that fit? If this measurements are not the same then clearly the shop/ dressmaker have to rectify it as you did not receive the dress you ordered. To be so far out sounds like there has been a mix up regarding sizes somewhere that is not your fault. The inches you are talking about would equate to a very significant change in weight that would be obvious to everybody. We are not talking about few pound weight change here.........

Whoarethoseguys · 07/05/2025 11:42

As they gave you false information when you bought the dress, ie they said you didn't need your measurements taken and that as the sample dress fitted they would order you one in that size and it will fit, you have a good case to get your money back or for them to let you choose something else that is available, if they have anything you like and it fits you. As the item you paid for is not as described and not fit for its purpose.
I would definitely try that and if nothing suitable that you like is available in the shop although you only have a short time left I think you need to find another wedding dress somewhere else more reliable.
I'm very sorry as weddings are stressful enough anyway.

5128gap · 07/05/2025 11:51

You need to press the shop for a refund and find a different dress. Don't do anything at all to the existing dress, keep it exactly as it is. Phone the citizens advice consumer helpline for advice on requesting the refund.

There's been a fuck up and she's ordered the wrong size/they've sent the wrong size.

I'd ask for a full refund and you won't take it any further, and start again.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 07/05/2025 12:35

Get a refund. Buy a dress from somewhere else. Too much drama.

Did you pay by credit card?

I'd be looking for a refund in full.

I think the dress shop behaved badly, they should have taken measurements to ensure the dress you ordered would fit. Do you have a Wedtobe shop near you, they have off the peg dresses at very reasonable prices that you can take home on the day. It may not be your dream dress but you'll have something to get married in then you can tackle the shop to get your money back without the worry of what you're going to wear to your wedding after the big day.

diddl · 07/05/2025 13:33

What if another dress doesn't arrive within a week?

You'd be better of getting a refund if possible.

Obviously that should have happened as soon as the dress didn't fit!

This is how they manage to mess you about as it's a heart rules head situation!
