Can anyone help me with an outfit colour problem? re Mother of Groom

I’d be grateful for your thoughts regarding my MOG outfit for wedding this October coming.

The bridesmaids are in bottle green dresses, men are in green/brown tweed, MOB has chosen burgundy and the bride has suggested that a rust colour might be nice for me as this matches the colours of the wedding, green, rust, burgundy tones. Thing is… I’m not too keen on rust. I have been talking to MOB about a plum colour but I got the impression she thought I was straying into her burgundy territory so fair enough…. I see what she means…. Does anyone have any colour ideas for autumn weddings? I suit rich tones, dark hair, olive skin. Pastels wash me out.

What do you think the etiquette is here? It’s a posh venue and I want the bride to be happy with the photos. Maybe I was wrong to speak to her but I wanted communication to be good. How do MOB and MOG usually co-ordinate or arrange things? Grateful for any thoughts or advice thank you.

@MockTheGeek i attended my brother's wedding with little consideration to what others would wear. sadly it is one of my biggest regrets in life. i was seriously underdressed and was conscientious of this the entire day it ruined it for me. i was embarrassed. never again.

Meant kindly, if this was one of the biggest regrets in your life then you’ve lived well.

It’s lovely but not against very pale skin. OP could you pull off the bright mustard?

OP says dark hair and olive skin

Tatapie · 12/04/2025 22:50

I would say pansy purple. You need to find a colour that suits you first and tones in with rest second! Sounds like they’re going for warm autumnal colours. What colours do you normally wear?

GildedRage · 12/04/2025 22:59

@MockTheGeek it was in the end the fanciest wedding I’d ever attended everyone in gorgeous fancy Spanish gowns; brocade, jacquard, gold thread. Men in day suits (half tux) during 42C daytime ancient church wedding (complete with a papal certificate signed by the pontif). Me in a clingy peach colored jersey stretch gown every jelly roll visible.

I don’t think I could pull that off actually. It’s a good suggestion but I don’t think it’s me. I never wear this kind of thing.

You have my sympathies Gilded. No wonder it stays in your mind.

A different shade of green?

APocketFullOfRye · 13/04/2025 06:38

Our mothers didn’t co ordinate colours
They wore exactly what they wanted to and the photos look lovely.
Why would anyone want you to be uncomfortable. Wear what you want and if it’s burgundy so be it.

Although our wedding was black and white. Black tie do. So any colour would have worked tbh

APocketFullOfRye · 13/04/2025 06:46

Just looked up Co ordinating colours and the best are mustardy colours. They look gorgeous, very classy (ignore the fact it’s furniture and sarees in the pic, it’s just for visuals )
The burgundy combo tbh looks very harsh imo

Ignore the styles. Most are pretty awful. A couple are nice but look at the colours.

Again looking at colours not styles. A bit of sheen/metallic or lace might work too

Gosh it's so limiting having to shop with a specific colour in mind. My mam and mother in law chose their own outfit colours and styles and it worked out great. Bridemaids in midnight blue, mam in aquamarine and mum in law in lilac. Hope you find something fabulous that you are happy wearing.

SparklyGlitterballs · 13/04/2025 07:10

You're very thoughtful OP to want to blend with the colour theme and not match MOB. Some nice dresses suggested here.

For my (1990) wedding my own mother wore some bright coloured thing with lots of blue and cerise, which clashed with the bridesmaids, and my MIL turned up in a dress that was just off white! MIL and I didn't have a good relationship needless to say.

PrincessOfPreschool · 13/04/2025 07:16

I think navy might 'recess' you in photos and with mustard you will stand out so it depends what kind of person you are. Both would 'go' with the colour scheme. Personally I would look at burnt orange and mustard or gold/ copper.

sunshineandshowers40 · 13/04/2025 07:24

It is lovely that you are so thoughtful. My MIL wore off white to my wedding (same colour as my dress), very odd but it didn't ruin my day.

Lots of great suggestions on this thread.

I can't believe she did that. How rude.

Sézane have some nice trouser suits if you would consider that. I also saw a jacket in the yellow but can’t find it now.

Whilst it is natural to want to fit in, look appropriate and invested in the day please make sure you are 100% happy with what you wear even if it slightly off target. I wore an appropriate dress for my dd's wedding and I can hardly bear to look at myself in the photos.

Scottishexplorer · 13/04/2025 09:03

My mother (MOB) wore navy (winter wedding) and it looked amazing. We let the MOG know the colour but not expecting her to wear any other particular colour but just because she’s very stylish and I knew she wouldn’t want to wear something too similar to my mother. I don’t think she would have worn navy anyway as it’s not her style.

Op I think you sound like a lovely MOG and I hope you have a great time on the day.

Shetlands · 13/04/2025 09:42

Would you suit coral or soft red shades?

Shortpoet · 13/04/2025 09:52

I’ve pulled up some coordinating autumn pallets.

I know I’d look awful in anything rust coloured.

But there are some nice blues, teals, navy, purples and dark chocolate browns and golds to go after.
