Wood fired pizza at a wedding - does this price look ok to you?

CatTV · 15/01/2025 11:51

We have been quoted £980 for a woodfired pizza set up for our wedding for 120 guests - so £14 per head. Includes sauces, boxes and full clear up afterwards. They have glowing reviews on social media and google.

Does this sound reasonable? I have zero wood fired pizza booking experience, so thought I would check in on here!!

TIA!

We are not doing a sit down.
Will there be any seating? I'd hate to stand in heels trying to eat a pizza from my hand or a plate!
I went to a supposedly trendy wedding venue once- beanbags, stools, a few low wicker chairs and only a few tables and chairs. Not enough seating for even half the people to sit. It was awful standing for hours!

Plenty of seating. Round tables in the main room and benches outside etc x

It's a bargain. Just check they have done this size of event before and check their reviews.

Went to a wedding that did similar - pizza van for the evening (so we did eat earlier on post ceremony).

No idea on actual numbers of pizzas that they made in the end but they were making the pizzas and then laying them out as a sort of hot buffet which meant there was less waiting around (which I liked) and meant that people just helped themselves to a couple of slices at a time and mixed and matched on toppings. But also meant that come the end there was about 15 pizzas left over - and they boxed up as a cold buffet for the couple of hours after they left.

You could give out tokens or ask for orders in advance to manage food orders and demand too

This worked well at weddings ive been to

CatTV · 15/01/2025 12:51

Got some awesome insights and advice here, which will help with our planning as well as thoughts on the price.

Thanks, all! Turning off notifications as have to go back to work.

You've all been great. Thanks!

For the love of god don’t have pizza as the only option at any function. There is a fixed time making and cooking.

Just do the maths.
Average 2 pizzas every 5 mins = 24 per hr

So 3hrs for 70 people to get a pizza if the van works flat out.

They may have bases ready and say it’s a 3 min turnaround for 2 pizzas ( don’t believe them) but even if they can sustain this pace

2 pizzas every 3 mins = 40 per hr

So still almost 2hrs for 70 people while the last ones have to watch the first ones eating.

I went to a function ( not a wedding) where the food on offer was pizza and cupcakes everyone could get a cupcake ( or 3) they could be made in advance pick one up and away you go.
Pizza was a nightmare I think there were about 60 people ( including kids) there, people were getting drunk without food to mop it up all the families thought it unfair that kids weren’t prioritised and they weren’t prepared to wait an hour and ended up leaving. Some people got more pizza than others as the van started serving slices (rather than whole pizzas) to try and speed things up, it could have turned nasty

YaWeeFurryBastard · 15/01/2025 12:59

Food trucks are a lovely idea but the problem with the weddings I’ve been to are the huge queues they cause. The most recent one was a burger van (so quicker than pizza) and it took 1.5hours to get all the guests a burger and the majority of that time was spent queuing.

LuckySantangelo35 · 15/01/2025 13:00

People don’t need a full pizza to themselves. Factor in one or two slices per person. You don’t wanna waste money and have loads left over

Theperenniallaunderess · 15/01/2025 13:00

We went to a wedding with a pizza van - they cut it into slices before popping it on a table next to the van for people to help themselves. There wasn’t much of a queue because people grabbed a slice or two before moving back to where they had been standing.

AtomicBlondeRose · 15/01/2025 13:00

The rolling buffet idea sounds like the best - they could just keep making them, and then putting them out sliced on the table - if you agreed this would be for a set period of time then nobody would feel they had to rush up there and there wouldn’t be big queues either. With the option to order separately for those with specific food needs.

Nellyelephanty · 15/01/2025 13:02

We went to a lovely 30th birthday that had a food truck, it could only serve about 10 people in 15 mins. It took over 2-3 hours for everyone to eat, just something to bear in mind

You must be joking! 1-2 slices per person is an insultingly small amount, I’d actually be quite annoyed as a guest if that is what’s provided and be seriously judging the hosts for being penny pinching. Incredibly poor form.

Notgivenuphope · 15/01/2025 13:07

I just love this idea.
Am imagining my straight laced family hating it but me and boyfriend would love this option!

@YaWeeFurryBastard

the slices are pretty big with some pizzas you know

Bjorkdidit · 15/01/2025 13:14

Wouldn't the pizza be served by the slice so people can take a couple of slices to eat and go back later for more? Or perhaps put a couple of pizzas on each table to share?

Surely they're not going to give whole pizzas to individuals while others wait hours without any food?

BraveFacesEveryone · 15/01/2025 13:16

We had a pizza van at our wedding. We gave everyone a token for a pizza each that we’d paid for and the van took payments if anyone wanted more.

There was a short queue at times, but most orders were kinda spread out over the night.

ThejoyofNC · 15/01/2025 13:16

In my experience whenever people try to do 'alternative' food, it's just a nightmare. There's a reason a plated meal served with allocated seating is the norm for large events.

Differentstarts · 15/01/2025 13:17

Just do a really big dominos order. Obviously pre book

Omg. No no and no. Guests will be starving and very drunk

I wasn’t going to post what I was originally thinking because I was expecting to get jumped on by loads of posters like you, but actually I think I will. Have you seen a proper wood fired pizza? The bases are only one third of a centimetre thick with a smear of sauce and small but flavourful toppings. We go to a hell of a lot of food festivals and my kids absolutely adore wood fired pizzas, they’ll make a beeline for that first, all three children are still young, are very small and skinny all 3 will put away a whole margarita each before scouring the vans for something else. If we’re talking about actual adults who are drinking, there’ll be plenty who will do in a whole one of those pizzas to themselves, and then go back for another one in 2 and a half hours

BingoLarge · 15/01/2025 13:20

You should ask them how fast they can serve the pizzas. Would suggest that the other food truck is something that can be served instantly eg paella.

If this is all people are getting, definitely don't reduce the amount!

JingsMahBucket · 15/01/2025 13:22

The OP already said multiple times that pizza won’t be the only food truck there! There will be other food that people can eat.

I think OP might have factored waste in because she’s got 70 pizzas for 120 people. Although I’m sure from people with big appetites 1/2 slices of pizza will not be very filling at all

Newhi · 15/01/2025 12:04

I’ve just seen your update, I think you might need more pizzas. The weddings I have been to also had around the same amount of guests and a couple of other food truck options. There were a lot of people who had a couple of pizzas each!! Will they just shut up shop when the 70th person orders?

Bear in mind this was after a full three course meal around 5pm. Don’t underestimate how hungry people get after a lot of drinking and dancing!!!

This. I was going to reply to you but decided to reply to the 2 slice each poster instead. Me and oh would probably have one and a half each of those, more depending on how long we were there. I cba for the mn competitive undereating, as if 2 slices of 3mm thick pizza is going to carry you through an entire wedding and wedding party!
