Is that a thing?

Having just a wedding ring and not an engagement ring?

I think it's a tradition that's slowly dying out . It's not the big thing it was years ago . I haven't heard of an engagement for years

crossstitchingnana · 16/01/2023 13:34

I didn't want an engagement ring, it's not my sort of jewellery and I like plain bands.

I went for this for a little sparkle.

That is stunning! I love it

Neither of us could afford an engagement ring at the time. We weren't engaged very long anyway before getting married and we clubbed together for two wedding rings.
I've since inherited DH's mother's engagement ring so I wear that. It's not what I'd have chosen, but DH likes me wearing it.

BasiliskStare · 16/01/2023 13:57

@blesbliss - utterly your choice . My SIL has only a wedding ring. Great friend of mine has a big diamond engagement ring but scarcely ever wears it. I have a rub over setting engagement ring so can wear it say to day. I would not worry one jot about other people's opinions . & indeed to wear neither is a proper option.

I have an engagement ring and then an eternity ring as my wedding ring.

redpinkyellow · 16/01/2023 14:02

I didn't get an engagement ring - didn't want one. It was more of a discussion about getting married and we did it 4 months later. I did go for a wedding ring with a few diamonds in it. DH did then buy me an eternity ring that sits with my wedding ring after I had DC.

Flittingaboutagain · 16/01/2023 14:53

We didn't get engaged as such we just discussed getting married then set a date so only have wedding rings. I find the concept of being engaged rather odd unless you're very young and don't intend to actually marry for many years.

I have both an engagement ring and a wedding ring but haven't worn either in about 20 years. We celebrated our ruby wedding anniversary earlier this year.....

I think I’m just going to use my engagement ring as a wedding ring, it’s simple, pretty and I’m not sure another ring would complement it.

bloodywhitecat · 17/01/2023 09:33

I only had a wedding band and it was a silver one so no great cost but we chose it together and I love it. A few months later DH bought me a beautiful eternity ring which I now wear on top of my wedding band, he bought it for me because he loved me for his eternity.

OneFrenchEgg · 17/01/2023 09:37

I don't wear a wedding ring at all, used to wear just the band as I always hated my engagement ring but we couldn't afford to change it/i didn't want to ask.

I remember when we went back to resize it at the place it came from the woman opened the box and did a stupid fake gasp at this fairly basic ring and I just hated her and it even more after that!

I have this real resentment at labelling myself as married, it's so weird. I want my name back as well but dh would be so hurt after all these years.

LovelaceBiggWither · 17/01/2023 09:41

I didn't have an engagement ring, didn't want one. We do have wedding rings but neither of us wear them. Sometimes I look at pretty rings but I know I wouldn't wear it enough to justify the cost. We've been married for over 30 years.

SalviaOfficinalis · 17/01/2023 09:41

My engagement ring only comes out for posh events.

I only wear my wedding ring sporadically too, DH hasn’t worn his since the day of our wedding.

That stupid fake gasp thing sounds so cringe ewww Pretty sure it would have given me the ick too!

OneFrenchEgg · 19/01/2023 17:06

@EthelredtheUnhappy yeah it was kind of the death knell to the ring really. Just so stupid, it was a basic ring not the Koh I noor or whatever

wintertime9 · 25/01/2023 16:56

Just a wedding band here. My choice.

WashableVelvet · 25/01/2023 17:01

I just wear my wedding ring. I had an engagement ring - an inexpensive pretty one with a semiprecious stone, not marketed as an engagement ring, which I wore some but not all of the time before we were married. I got DH an engagement ring too which he sometimes wore.

ginslinger · 25/01/2023 17:33

I got married over 30 years ago and never had an engagement ring - just a simple band
