Is anyone having wedding ring only - no engagement ring?

Is that a thing?

Having just a wedding ring and not an engagement ring?

I only wear my wedding ring. I do have an engagement ring, but i only bring it out for ‘posh’ occasions.

Todaynotalways · 16/01/2023 11:57

I own an engagement ring, I have not worn it since the wedding.
I've never loved it (I chose it, bad choice) and it doesn't suit my lifestyle (like, using my hands to retrieve items from my pockets).

I don't see the problem in not having one. UNLESS - you want one, but someone is too mean to get you one. It doesn't have to be an enormous diamond... just something you like to wear.

ScottishBeth · 16/01/2023 11:58

We didn't bother with engagement rings. We're both women, and neither of us wanted one.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 16/01/2023 11:59

I think in Scandinavian countries they don't really do engagement rings. Personally I like the simplicity of just a band. You could go for an eternity style ring and that would incorporate diamonds if you were keen to have some sparkle.

Yes me. I am getting married in April after setting a date in december. No engagement ring, just a wedding band. I don't like jewellery much and wouldn't want something valuable because I'm quite careless. So one band is enough. What are your thoughts?

ImBlueDab · 16/01/2023 12:00

I don't have an engagement ring, we kept things really low key, knew we both wanted to get married, arranged it without bothering to get engaged so only have wedding rings.

StamppotAndGravy · 16/01/2023 12:04

Me. It seemed a bit pointless, plus out of principle I refused to wear what is in effect a 'reserved' label. I'd already got some nice sparkly rings and the money was better spent elsewhere. We got really high quality wedding bands instead so they don't scratch as badly. You can get stones set in the wedding band too if you want both in one.

I'm the same with mine

ObsidianBlock · 16/01/2023 13:00

I didn't have one. I didn't want one because i feel they're quite sexist and a reflection of the woman sitting around waiting for a man to ask her but me and dh agreed to get married mutually, so am engagement ring seemed really pointless. I spent more than i usually would have to get the wedding ring i really wanted instead.

My thoughts are similar to yours.

Good to know there isn't an absolute requirement.

I did it the other way around, I have an engagement ring but no wedding ring. Do what you want, it is nobody else's business.

Optionally · 16/01/2023 13:11

I don’t much like jewellery and don’t much like the symbolism of an engagement ring. So I’ve always just had a plain wedding band. Didn’t change my name, either. It’s been nearly 20 years and I don’t think anyone has ever noticed my lack of engagement ring, certainly no one has ever asked me about it.

ApolloandDaphne · 16/01/2023 13:13

I have what I would describe as a wedding band but with three little diamonds in it so it looks a little bit fancier than a plain band. I love it.

Lottapianos · 16/01/2023 13:15

'It seemed a bit pointless, plus out of principle I refused to wear what is in effect a 'reserved' label'

Totally agree. I find the concept of 'engagement' absolutely cringe.

You can wear no rings at all if you want to, totally up to you!

Gandalfsdaughter · 16/01/2023 13:16

No engagement ring here, only wedding ring. We had been together for 15 yrs and have 2 children together before we got married. We kept it simple and lovely and not too much fuss 😄

theemmadilemma · 16/01/2023 13:16

Yes I only have wedding ring. Someone asked me where my engagement ring was and I said 'the house'. Honestly we'd been together for 8 years and had far better things to spend money on for our future than a diamond for my finger frankly.

theemmadilemma · 16/01/2023 13:21

I went for this for a little sparkle.

Twizbe · 16/01/2023 13:23

I have both but I chose my wedding ring with the thought I could wear it without my engagement ring in the future.

At the time I married it was fashionable to have you're wedding ring fit perfectly to your engagement ring ... I didn't do that.

As it is as the moment I still wear both but who knows. I might change my style later.

BlueChampagne · 16/01/2023 13:24

We didn't bother with engagement rings.

Lottapianos · 16/01/2023 13:26

That's lovely, theemmadilemma

Thesonglastslonger · 16/01/2023 13:27

I know a woman who ‘chose’ not to have an engagement ring (aka her miser husband didn’t give her one when he proposed and then later rolled his eyes and said “you don’t want an engagement ring do you”).

After several miserable years, their marriage is finally limping across the finish line. Looking back, that lack of generosity and sparkle at the beginning was a symptom of so much more.

I’m not saying you have to have an engagement ring, but make sure you know why you’re not getting one. Is your partner romantic? Generous? Sweet to you? If not please don’t waste your time.

thankyouforthesun · 16/01/2023 13:27

My grandmother never had an engagement ring and she made it happily to her diamond anniversary.

romdowa · 16/01/2023 13:30

I have an engagement ring but never wear it. Its just sat in a box. I picked an unusual wedding ring which I love and wear all the time. Nobody is going to know you don't have one.
