Did you get your hair and make up professionally done?

I've been quoted £500! Im only have a small registry office wedding with c.34 people and I'm not sure I can justify the cost however I'm not great at doing my own hair and make up.

Did you get yours done professionally and did you think it was worth it?

I've not been married, but I couldn't justify that myself either 😂 do you maybe have a friend who could help? Unless you're paying a fortune for professional photos and feel you really need it I wouldn't bother. As long as you're comfortable!

LaFemmeDamnee · 06/01/2023 09:20

Hair yes makeup no. Makeup artists always turn me orange. If I were you I'd practise my makeup now - get a good primer and visit some makeup counters to choose an excellent base - then just find a decent local hairdresser to do your hair, don't tell them it's for a wedding.

BoringLittleMe · 06/01/2023 09:21

Yes I did and to me it was worth it because I'm not very good at make up and I had waist-length hair that would have taken ages to style. I just wanted to relax on the morning with a glass of something and be a bit pampered!

SlipperyLizard · 06/01/2023 09:29

I had my hair put up in a nice style at a local (to the registry office) Toni & Guy, can’t remember the cost but not excessive.

Visited a few make up counters for ideas & did my own make up, at most of the counters I came away looking too heavily made up/orange, but with some decent ideas on eye shadow shades etc.

AnnaMagnani · 06/01/2023 09:32

No for both. I watched a lot of YouTube tutorials and practiced.

For makeup I did a Lisa Eldridge wedding look, I had loads of people ask who my makeup artist was as it looked really good.

BabyFour2023 · 06/01/2023 09:34

Yes. I paid £150 for my bridal makeup and £80 for my hair. So worth it for me. Not sure I would in your circumstance. Agree with others about the makeup counters and to make sure your skincare is great too.

Phos · 06/01/2023 09:37

I did but I knew I wouldn't be able to get my hair how I wanted it myself and I am terrible with make up. It cost £190. That was just for me as I didn't have any bridesmaids.

If I was confident with make up, and to be honest in my looks more generally, I might have done my own but to be honest, I would have needed to go to a load of make up counters as a PP mentioned and buy so much stuff I'd have ended up spending the same anyway.

Hopeislost · 06/01/2023 09:41

No I didn't have either professionally done. I went for a blow dry the day before and then just pinned it up myself (half up half down). And I booked a makeup lesson at a Bobbi Brown counter (redeemable against products).

Trymein · 06/01/2023 09:42

No, I wanted to look like me. Every time I’ve had my make up done it’s not really felt like me.

ISeeTheLight · 06/01/2023 09:43

Not married yet but I am getting hair & makeup professionally done. I can't do my hair and not great at doing makeup - don't want to be stressed over it in the morning. I've gone for a makeup artist who specialises in natural looks (so no Kim Kardashian style with lots of contouring etc). Hair stylist was recommended by my usual hairdresser.

Is the £500 just for you or does it include bridesmaids etc? If it's just for the bride that seems excessive; our wedding is in July and I'm paying £980 for hair & makeup for 4 people (& hair for flower girl). Shop around, ask in local FB groups for recommendations. You can definitely get it cheaper than that.

ISeeTheLight · 06/01/2023 09:44

Also on the above what I'm paying includes a trial for both hair and makeup. So I can make adjustments etc prior to the day if needed.

OneForTheRoadThen · 06/01/2023 09:56

Thanks all - it seems pretty mixed. I've had a couple of quotes and both come out at about £500. That's just for me and hair up for my 4 year old Confused probably because it's central London and involved the make up artist travelling to a hotel.

This is all via companies rather than a sole trader as I'm worried about being let down on the day. I'll have to think some more. Thanks for all your feedback!

If you don't say it's for a wedding you will pay MUCH less

Blixem · 06/01/2023 10:03

I did. We had a really small wedding with only immediate family but I wanted it to be as stress free as possible.
I got a local mobile hairdresser to do my hair, I didn't say it was wedding hair as we have mutual friends and no one knew about the wedding. And a friend is a makeup artist so I paid her to do my makeup. I think they were about £40 each but I didn't have any trials of anything.

Hairgician · 08/01/2023 22:07

Ah well if they have to travel then that incurs a call out fee too.

My stylist is doing my hair and the daughter does the make ups in their salon and will be doing mine and my bm. They were looking a call out fee of 160 each. To my house which is 10 mins up the road. So we are going to salon instead. Plus il get peace from kids and anyone calling to house .

TheDogsMother · 08/01/2023 22:17

I went to a local salon for a make up lesson with a make up artist, then booked another on the morning of the wedding. It was on that appointment I told them that it was my wedding that day. I had a lovely makeover without the wedding price tag.

Hair by my regular hairdresser but it wasn't elaborate or an up do.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 08/01/2023 22:21

Hair yes, make up no

I had a trial with a make artist who was supposedly very good but came away feeling like a clown. So I got my lashes tinted and permed and did my
own minimal makeup
(lashes was good for honeymoon too)

PinkHeadphones · 08/01/2023 22:23

No. My mum did my hair and I did my own make up.

greenbirdsong · 08/01/2023 22:25

I had my hair done but did my own makeup.

I spent a while before the wedding researching products and watching tutorials and YouTube videos. I spent about £50 on new makeup and was happy with the results.

I had a mobile hairdresser come to me to do my hair on the day, no trial, and I paid £50.

bakewellbride · 08/01/2023 22:25

I got my hair done - £120 including the trial. Trial at salon but on the morning of the wedding the lady came to my hotel and was brilliant. Really made me feel special.

I did my own make up but am crap at eyeshadow so my hair lady (who is also a makeup artist) did it and I gave her a tip for this.

So a total of £140 all in. I had a small wedding and there's no way I'd pay £500 - our entire wedding cost £2.5k!

Chewbecca · 08/01/2023 22:25

Crazy money.

I went to the hairdresser for an “up do”, so costing similar to a normal hair cut.
For make up, I went to a make up counter and had them do my make up and bought most of the products - eye shadows, liner, blush & a free sample of foundation. Used my own fave mascara and lipstick. I used the products for years after so it was good value for money. And I looked like myself but a bit better.

Nottodaty · 08/01/2023 22:28

It was my gift to my sister for her wedding , it was £150 (including trial).

I had a very little money when I got married on a lovely sunny autumn day - the photos of me I don’t like - I did my make up and while I looked fine it , the photos didn’t really work with sunny autumn day light reflecting of a white dress.

Metabigot · 08/01/2023 22:30

Yes, my hairdresser did my hair in the morning at the salon for around £20 ( blow dry/ chignon) and I paid about £90 for a pro makeup artist.

Just myself, didn't have bridesmaids only my daughter as a flower girl and she was 2!

Lenax · 08/01/2023 22:33

Yes, I had both hair & make professionally done and i'd recommend having both done if you have the budget for it.
For my hair, I used a hairdresser I often use because I love how she makes my hair look - no regrets.

When it came to my make-up I had a make-up artist in mind who I was tempted to skip a trial with and book for the day. Would have been a huge mistake if I had, as I went for a trial and did not like the look at all, wanted to wash it off as soon as I saw it.

Changed to another make up artist eventually, after wondering if I should have no make up at all, and I am glad I did because the 2nd artist did such a brilliant job at both the trial & on the day.

BettyBoopy · 08/01/2023 22:33

£500 is crazy money! I did my own hair and make up for my own small wedding, I'd had it cut and blow dried the day before but that's all. If you don't mention the W word I'm sure it would be hundreds cheaper!
