Have I left it abit late?

Hi
Getting married end of July and have an appointment for a bridal shop next Saturday. Starting to think maybe I've left it a little late for starting to look for dresses ? Do they take ages to make etc if I don't find a sample one or something? Maybe I've been a little too laid back !

It's normally around 6 months to make a dress so you might be ok or you can buy off the peg.

newtothisbride · 01/02/2022 17:04

6 months !! Why does it take so long ? Is off the peg just a dress in my size that I can get altered ?

The designer I chose had a six month order time and I think that is pretty common but they aren’t all like that. Just be honest at the appointment about when your wedding is and the shop will explain/show you the options that will work for you.

Lazypuppy · 01/02/2022 17:15

I got one from the shop so it was cheaper, but the alterations took a few months. Normally you get your wedding dress altered so it fits you perfectly.

MagicMatilda · 01/02/2022 17:17

I’d say you’d be fine. I ordered mine at the end of December and got it by the first week of March. Enjoy!

Anything from 6 months to 9 months is typical. Wedding dress shops have samples in store that you try on to see what you like. Then you order from the designer with your own measurements. They measure you in several different places, hips, waist and bust. Then you order the size that fits tbe biggest part of you and have the dress altered to fit your specific measurements.
Designers supply hundreds if not thousands of different shops and so the shops will order once they know a customer wants to purchase. Its not like a high street chain where they have 10 size 12s, 19 size 14s etc in stock. It wouldn't be cost effective for bridal salons to order in sizes like that. Also bridal sizes are way different that high street sizes. You might end up ordering a size 18 but in normal life be a 12. So don't worry about that.

Off the peg means buying a sample dress that a bridal shop has already in store and is wanting to sell at a discounted rate. So you take that exact dress you try on home with you.

Shit, I'm abit worried now 😆
I honestly thought I didn't wana be too full on going dress shopping so early but it seems like women do it for this reason exactly !
The last couple of days ive been stressing trying to organise and book things, even though it's meant to be 'informal'
Looks like I've got something else to panic about now !

As long as you don’t have your heart set on something, there’s no need to worry.

If it will put your mind at rest call the shop tomorrow and ask what options you will have with your wedding date. There will be plenty, just perhaps not all!

Shadappayourface · 01/02/2022 17:24

As others have said, 6 months is standard.

Your best bet is either:

getting a second-hand dress from stillwhite.com (or similar website), you can also get a discount this way.

Or

Getting a sample dress, which will be the last dress they have in their shop of a certain dress model and size. Again you can get discounts on these.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/02/2022 17:24

What size are you op?

Shadappayourface · 01/02/2022 17:25

Or third option:

Get a wedding-style dress from a website such as Asos/Phase Eight etc

newtothisbride · 01/02/2022 17:37

I'm a size 10-12 usually, small chested 32B (i think) but have serious bloating issues (if relevant)

newtothisbride · 01/02/2022 18:19

What size would I be in a wedding dress ?

HairyScaryMonster · 01/02/2022 18:41

Don't panic til you've been shopping, some are 4-5 months. But you need to factor in alterations when it arrives depending on style. Our boutique did them within a week or 2.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/02/2022 18:41

You should be OK off the peg them I'd think, possibly a 12-14so don't take it to heart 😂

nellly · 01/02/2022 18:49

I found wed2b fab and they are typically a lot quicker, they have various branches throughout the uk maybe one a drive from you? Or go to bridal boutiques that will let you take one home that day then book for alterations

newtothisbride · 01/02/2022 18:58

I'm going to a small bridal shop in my local town so will see what happens there. I also have a wed2be about 18miles away so I'm 100% planning a trip there too !

QforCucumber · 01/02/2022 18:59

I bought a 14 off the peg because I loved it, I’m a 10. Had it altered to fit. The seamstress said she can always take a dress down 2-3 sizes.

JLQ1020 · 01/02/2022 19:02

My dress was a size 18 I'm usually a size 12. But I've a large bust so needed a bigger size to accommodate.

Alfixn · 01/02/2022 19:02

Honestly I would just say it to the shop when you arrive, I think they can put a bit of a rush on items and get them sooner. I wouldn't panic. But don't waste too much more time either I suppose!

JLQ1020 · 01/02/2022 19:03

@newtothisbride

What size would I be in a wedding dress ?
Could be 12 or 14 could be 16. Depends on the dress style, designer and your own body shape.
newtothisbride · 01/02/2022 19:30

Yes I will be honest definitely, don't want to land myself in anymore hot water !
Just didn't realise any of this, never been married before etc all new to me !

ImInStealthMode · 01/02/2022 23:17

Just tell them in the shop and they'll advise what options you have. Mine is a sample that was in the sale so ultimately I could have walked out with it on the day if I wanted to. I didn't know that until after I tried it on though.

Sarahplane · 01/02/2022 23:40

Try wed2b, the dresses are in stock and you take them home that day so you just need time for alterations.
