Getting wedding dress framed

Bubnomore · 06/12/2020 00:46

Hello,

I’m thinking about getting my wedding dress put in a deep picture box to display as I can’t think what else to do with it

Would appreciate any tips and/or details of who you used to do it.

Thanks!

Thinking stairway to master bedroom it’s on a separate floor to the rest of the house so is not in a high traffic area in the house.

Loving the responses.

DH is not doing the same with his suit. He has offered to DIY frame my wedding dress as he thinks enough has been spent on this one dress due to the cost of buying it, and cleaning it.

Got married 10 years ago. No DDs only DSs who love hearing about our wedding day hence I thought it might be quite nice idea. Albeit, re-thinking based on some of the replies ie a nice idea but doesn’t mean necessarily good idea to do it 😁

I think on the wall of a dressing room would be the only acceptable place for that IMO.

Titsinknicks · 06/12/2020 22:40

I agree with pp. On the wall of a dressing room or walk in wardrobe is ok but anywhere else no

Mammaaof · 06/12/2020 22:42

Mmmm bit odd

Aquamarine1029 · 06/12/2020 22:49

The wedding was TEN years ago and you want to do this now? I thought you were some young, giddy newlywed. Truly one of the most bizarre ideas I've ever heard.

BackforGood · 06/12/2020 22:53

I'm in the 'truely bizarre' camp too.

I mean, I'm totally of the opinion that people can decorate their houses however they want, but you did ask.

User478 · 06/12/2020 22:58

I worked for someone who had theirs framed and hung on the wall above the stairs up to their top floor master suite with a mirror where the head would be, so when you walked down the stairs you could line your reflection up so your head was in the right place. It had some of their wedding vows written around it.
It was done quite nicely. It suited them very well and I'm sure they loved it.

I had mine cut to cocktail length and wear it to summer parties.

@Regularsizedrudy

...it’s a bit great expectations isn’t it?
Only if the wedding breakfast stays mouldering on the table and you stop all the clocks. Grin

You know what, if it gives you pleasure - do it. It doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks

Sal1977 · 06/12/2020 23:08

Beetlejuice was the first image in my mind! 😆

Papyrus · 06/12/2020 23:13

Each to their own. But as a museum curator, can I recommend that you get it conservation framed (this will be expensive) and be careful about the light and humidity levels where you plan to display the dress, or else you run the risk of it deteriorating quite quickly.

FlippinNoah · 06/12/2020 23:37

As you said you can't think of what else to do with it - would you consider donating the dress to the charity Cherished Gowns UK (they're on FB)? They turn wedding dresses into tiny baby gowns for babies who are born sleeping. My wedding dress got turned into 14 gowns.

mynexdoorneighbourisaprat · 06/12/2020 23:43

Your dress , your house , your choice , I'm minimalist so it wouldn't be my choice but if you have a wall in a dressing room or landing on an upper floor sounds like a good way of using the dress and remembering a happy day
Do what suits you don't listen to the views of a lot of random strangers
Much nicer idea and more original than some of the ghastly b & m 'live life love' wall decor some people display on their walls

Picktionary · 06/12/2020 23:49

I think its a nice idea if you have a beautiful dress. If I could afford to frame mine I would - but mine is Indian, not white wedding dress.

First thought to mind was the ‘art’ that phoebe wanted to give Monica and Rachel in friends Grin

justgeton · 06/12/2020 23:56

Don't you have a loft?!

Tavannach · 07/12/2020 00:37

If it makes you happy do it.
Personally if I had an expensive wedding dress I'd have it altered to something I could wear for special occasions or give it to charity.

Yes! That was exactly my first thought.
scrivette · 07/12/2020 01:36

I like the idea, I was only saying today that I love how some people do different things with the decor in their house to make it personal to them.

I absolutely would do this if I had a big enough space on a wall.

CuppaZa · 07/12/2020 01:50

I have mine framed and in my dressing room. It cost A LOT, but for me personally it was worth it.
As PP said, wouldn’t advise it if you live in a 3 bed semi, but a larger house and away from public spaces is fine

Same here 😂
Littlegoth · 07/12/2020 06:31

@Bubnomore I’m a professional framer. I recommend you use a guild certified framer (list can be found www.fineart.co.uk/directory/Default.aspx) who specialises in conservation. As others have said it will not be cheap - I don’t know anyone who would do this for less £800 - most people I know charge more like £1000.

It a lot of money but it needs special glass and materials to stops UV and normal air degrading your dress, plus it’s a difficult and time consuming task to do properly and to conservation standards (and for this reason some framers would turn the job away!).

Personally, I think framed wedding dresses can be gorgeous to look at. Good luck.

madroid · 07/12/2020 07:00

No no no, it's unhinged Grin

You're married. Good. Now move on.

madroid · 07/12/2020 07:01

Give that £1000 to charity.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 07/12/2020 07:12

@FlippinNoah That sounds like a lovely charity.
What a great thing to do in such heartbreaking circumstances.
