Non-revealing wedding dress

Hi,

I’ve started looking at dresses and wonder if anyone can suggest good places to go for them online. The criteria are:

-white
-floor length
-under £100 (because I can’t spend more on an outfit I will only wear once)
-traditional rather than sexy (so no deep cleavage/push up thing)
-one where I could actually wear a bra! I definitely need one for my chest and every dress I have seen so far is either strapless, has a deep back or full lace top so in any of them even clear straps would show.

I have checked out Chi Chi London and Ever Pretty so far. Any other similar websites? I have always planned to order my dress from China, but having seen a few expectation vs reality photos, I would rather not waste my time, unless I can return it easily.

Thanks!

Also, in the one you have linked PeachScone, would the bra straps not be visible through the lace, even the clear straps?

I’m wearing it without a bra as it’s thick enough on the panel below! (I’m a DD for reference) Clear straps I think wouldn’t be visible though

Totally get they aren’t for everyone! I’m not very glitzy so it’s perfect for me haha

I have just pinched someone else’s words when they described people being in the same wedding dress (and this is what puts me off second-hand and sample dresses):

  • someone’s BO, perfume, moisturiser, sunscreen, makeup, fake tan or cigarette smoke🤢

Cold wash with a detergent or a dry clean would get rid of stains, but would they get rid of the above? Could I use a baby-safe Dettol antibacterial liquid?

Sorry to keep asking more questions, but how would I dry a dress if I don’t have a strong shower curtain railing (it’s an extendable one which falls down if weight is put on it) and if it’s wet and cold outside (we live in Scotland)? Any answers re: washing it from my previous post are also much appreciated!

@StrongInside - generally speaking, if someone has donated their wedding dress to a charity shop, it may be dry-cleaned before it is put up for sale. There is no BO (unless the previous wearer had a condition) left in the garment or sunscreen or make up or fake tan or residual cigarette smoke smells.

If you are buying a dress and it needs to be cleaned, can you not bring it to a dry-cleaners and get them to do it?
I understand that you're trying to do this on a budget but I think you're scrimping on bits of the wedding that shouldn't be scrimped on.

Just my 2c on the matter

StrongInside · 11/09/2019 13:27

I think dry cleaning costs will be higher than buying a new dress from somewhere like Ever Pretty (£150ish vs.£40) so wanted to clean it myself or not at all.

I understand that this is just my opinion but I still think you're approaching the situation from the wrong perspective.
Yes it will be an outfit you generally only wear once.
Why would you want to run the risk of washing it yourself in your own washing machine and for the dress to perhaps get damaged beyond wear? You will have wasted your money then. I really do think that if you're looking for a second hand wedding dress (or a new one that is very reasonably priced off the rail), you would be better off looking at Oxfam Brides, or One Fine Day or similar. They wont sell a gown that is dirty or beyond being worn again by another lucky bride and you wont have to wash it yourself.

I bought mine 2nd hand (eBay) and it had already been dry cleaned, I think most sellers would do that. It was v clean, not a trace of scent or makeup.

sheshootssheimplores · 11/09/2019 13:37

Ive just bought my wedding dress for £100 off Oxfam online. Might be worth a look.

nrpmum · 11/09/2019 13:42

I bought mine from Quiz for our wedding last year.

OP the jjshouse website is pretty good, I got my flower girl dresses from there and they were surprisingly good quality and fit beautifully, just give yourself plenty of time for delivery.

lovemenorca · 11/09/2019 13:57

I love love love this one

WhatchaMaCallit, I have just read about so many brides washing theirs without a problem, either in the washing machine or by hand, that I thought I could try it. In the end, the dress isn’t as important to me as, say, a holiday so I will get an Ever Pretty dress and save my money.

Katmarie, I like their dresses but their Trustpilot reviews aren’t the greatest and their returns policy isn’t either:/

Lovemenorca, sorry but to me that looks like a fancy nightie🤭 But that’s my problem with the whole wedding- I have quite particular tastes, and everything is either overpriced or plain and boring. I don’t think I care about the dress anymore- I’ll get something cheap and plain and bling it up with a belt or something, because dry cleaning costs for a cheap dress defeat the point of buying a cheap dress. And cleaning it myself (or rather finding a place to dry it) sounds like too much hassle. Chinese dresses are a hit or a miss. High street dresses to me are all like beach dresses or nighties. If they were in different colours, I wouldn’t be able to tell they are wedding dresses.

My local charity wedding dress shop has loads of ex-monsoon stock, donated by the shop so never worn. Might be worth checking if yours has anything similar?

StrongInside · 13/09/2019 13:46

Will have a wonder around for sure, doesn’t hurt!
