Older brides advice especially THE DRESS!!

I am getting married next year and mid fifties, it is 2nd time around but 1st time in church for me :)

Planning is going well but I am terrified about what to wear!
I haven't looked yet but thinking along the lines of maybe a fifties style tea length dress as I am only 5ft 1" and size 10 but then I waver towards something long and elegant.
I am so worried I will look ridiculous!
Also worried about using a MUA but want to look my best all day, I am concerned they will overdo it which can be very ageing. Would welcome any advice at all please.

I'll be 43 next year when I get married. I have been looking at ASOS, Monsoon, Chi-Chi and Phase eight. All have lovely options.

Greyhound22 · 09/04/2019 18:54

A friend a similar age got married a couple of years back and she had the most beautiful dress from Monsoon. It was perfect. I'll see if I can find similar....

Greyhound22 · 09/04/2019 18:55

Also this was my wedding dress from Phase Eight - sounds similar to what you are looking for. It's the Cressida.

I am 49 and eloping in 7 weeks with a beauty of a Monsoon dress in my case. Its sparkly and has a small train. Grin

Greyhound22 · 09/04/2019 18:57

This is a similar Monsoon one. I am also 5'1 and the full length dresses were just too long. Would have lost the shape of most of them if they had been shortened that much.

I am late 40s getting married for the second time I have gone to a specialist who does both tea length and long vintage and fifties inspired dresses. All bespoke so the fit properly without extensive alterations.

Sundaychiller · 10/04/2019 09:19

Thanks for the great suggestions and congratulations to you all too :) Mint I bet you are very excited!

Some good suggestions here to be looking at thanks.

Lonecat is it very expensive to have one made?

What do you think to something like this, is it too young looking?

That's beautiful!! I'd wear that if I hadn't already got this one.

Wow that is stunning Mint!! I need to check out Monsoon )

Do you think the style I like is ok for an older bride?

I got married last year (41) and wore this. Felt really comfortable in it Smile

I’m not a fan of a tea dress. Always look a bit prissy to my mind. I also think it’s a younger woman’s dress, not that 50’s is old!
Personally in your 50’s I think you need to show you have style and substance and go for a killer long dress.

friskybivalves · 10/04/2019 17:10

Whistles have a new bridal collection - think I saw some dresses featured in the Sun tel Stella magazine. They have a lovely top and long skirt that look like a dress but that you might be able to wear as separates in the future. Will see if I can find a pic.

juneau · 10/04/2019 17:12

I think that dress you posted a pic of is lovely OP and if you have nice arms and cleavage then it will look great. I'm mid-40s and I would wear that style. It's very classic and elegant.

Long dresses are tricky if you are short. I'm only 5'4" and find it really hard to find long dresses that look good. I also think that you probably know what styles suit you by now - I know I do - and I'd stick with one that you know you look good in and will confident in on the day.

friskybivalves · 10/04/2019 17:12

This is Whistles skirt and top but they have other styles too. No meringues.

I agree with other posters to wear a style you feel happy in and not worry about whether it's 'age appropriate'. I couldn't wear a tea dress because I'm short too and the proportions are all wrong for me to feel comfortable - just too much sticky out skirt and not enough lower leg beneath. But if you find a style you feel happy in, that's what's most important.

madeleineinlondon · 10/04/2019 17:25

Congratulations! I got married for the second (and happiest!) time in my forties. I'm a bit taller than you but only a little, and also a size ten, and I wore a fifties dress that I found online in Oxfam vintage. I had to get it altered to fit, but I loved it. It was similar to this one, though a bit more home-made feeling.

Lonecatwithkitten · 10/04/2019 18:12

@Sundaychiller the place I went starts at £850 for bespoke ( obviously there are no alteration costs), though I have spent more than this as I am going long, a train, a less usual colour and heavily beaded. I am getting married at Christmas and whilst none of my guests would deliberately up stage me quite a few of them are spectacularly wealthy so I felt I needed something quite different.

Sundaychiller · 11/04/2019 11:04

Thank for all the replies love your dress Fattylaw!

Frisky that is a lovely combination but I think it would cut me in half being short.

Madeline- beautiful dress were you nervous buying online? I have seen a couple of nice dresses on ebay, good designers at a fraction of the rrp as used but worried they may not suit me when delivered.

Lonecat that is over my budget but I can see why you need to go down that route. Your dress sounds fabulous would love to see it :)

Shewore - what do you mean by prissy, do you mean it's a girly look? I like the idea of a killer long dress but not seen anything online that wows me yet.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 12/04/2019 08:16

Sunday - yes a bit girly ( tea dresses look similar to my mind, to the ubiquitous first “party dress” that 7-10 year old girls wear) and yet a bit stifled maybe?

I can see the dress in your photo is very nice but all I can see is Sandy from Grease. It’s hard to assess how you would look in it but I can’t imagine at a size 10 you wouldn’t look amazing in most things TBH. I guess it also depends on your shoes and hair, which will affect the look.

It’s just my impression of tea dresses and sorry if I am coming on a bit strong. I have a visceral reaction to them but obviously others like the look and can work it well.

Lonecatwithkitten · 12/04/2019 08:41

@Sundaychiller originally we thought we would elope/ super small wedding at that point I had several phase eight dresses in contention. I also looked on still white and found some lovely dresses there too.

Sundaychiller · 12/04/2019 08:42

No need to be sorry I asked for opinions so I appreciate your comments and I understand where you are coming from. You got me looking at other styles and I saw some fabulous long ones including this £1000 Pronovias one that I love (too spendy for me though!)

OP I really like the first dress you posted. I got married a couple of years ago at 40. I wore a long beaded dress from Monsoon. The thing I found with long dresses is that they were very long, probably for wearing with heels, which I don't do. I'm 5'6 and I'd have been tripping over lots of them! A long dress could look fab, but might be harder to find and would probably need altering. You have time though!

Sundaychiller · 12/04/2019 09:27

Lonecat thanks I will have look at stillwhite.

Nerdy, yes one of the reasons I like the short dresses is that I can imagine having more fun when dancing etc.
