Anyone wear a non-traditional wedding dress?

By that, I mean not a floor length white gown?

I'm only having a small wedding, so thinking of buying a knee length (not expensive white dress, or maybe not even white at all.

Wondering if anyone else has done this, or if it's a bit weird?

Bluewidow · 24/12/2018 17:05

I wore a 1950s fit and flare dress it was navy. I accessorised with a white jewelled belt and a white bolero.

hugoagogo · 24/12/2018 17:10

LadyOfTheCanyon - That dress is stunning! :)

My first wedding was a very lowkey Registry Office affair, just him, me & 2 witnesses. I wore a navy skirt suit with a cream blouse and the only reason I bought an expensive suit was that it would be suitable for work afterwards! We weren't skint, just didn't see the point in spending money unnecessarily.

Second wedding (25 years later and only marginally less lowkey) I wore a black silk velvet coat-dress with fancy fastenings I'd bought in a sale in a shop in Chinatown in San Francisco a few months before.

Wear what makes YOU happy. Sod what anyone else says.

Not myself BUT I used to work in the industry and its really not unusual. Indeed even in bridal boutiques there are dresses with less traditional styles, most come in a wide variety of colours (and I don't mean Ivory, off white etc I mean red, blue, purple, green, yellow, multi colours... Seriously all sorts!) and even full length ones can be shortened if you prefer (depending on overall style).

I've also had several (female) friends who've married in

Fifties style tea dress
Steampunk costume complete with top hat & monocle
Black gothic styling
Bikini and sarong
Maxi dress that cost £5!
Tuxedo
Morning suit
Full kilt/highland dress

Anything goes - it's your wedding!

I have to say the one I loved was the bride who was a client who married in a traditional style gown but it was iridescent purple and she wore it with Victorian style boots... And a red pill box hat with veil! She looked utterly amazing and had a great day and got loads of compliments too.

I got married earlier this year in a gold Lindybop dress with full net underskirt Smile

Gumbo · 24/12/2018 17:45

I wore a little burgundy velvet dress... just above the knee. It worked really well since it was a winter wedding, and I've worn it several times to posh events since then!

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 24/12/2018 17:56

I wore full length but coloured satin because I looked ill dreadful in every white/ivory dress I tried on, and because the bridesmaid dresses were about £800 cheaper than the wedding dresses. I think these days people don't bat an eyelid. Wear what you want to!

Low-key register office wedding here too. Early autumn, I wore a below the knee (hate my calves) lilac silk summer dress with matching jacket. DH wore a Moss green suit and no tie.
And two years later it fitted the bill as 'wedding guest' at my sister's traditional wedding. This time DH wore full Highland dress to match the occasion.

Jean Varon evening dress for me

Shmithecat · 24/12/2018 21:41

I wore this, a Ghost dress. Loved it.

Floor length slinky gold lamé gown (from the 1950s) for me. Didn't want to spend more than a few hundred and white frou-frou just not me. I have always loved vintage and this worked beautifully.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 24/12/2018 21:47

50s style ivory tea length, I had blue sparkly heels, 2 different coloured petticoats and a birdcage veil, I still love how I looked, and felt amazing.

riotlady · 24/12/2018 21:48

@Kleptronic can I ask where that’s from? It’s gorgeous!!

MutantDisco · 24/12/2018 21:52

Yep, 2008, wore an ivory knee-length party dress from Coast, people always compliment me on the photos!! I wanted to look 1960s-ish, so I did it with winged eyeliner and a bit of a beehive. I think it's dated quite well!

Kleptronic · 26/12/2018 10:56

@riotlady thanks, it's from Needle & Thread last summer.

Alaimo · 30/12/2018 13:11

I also got married in a dress from Needle & Thread. Mine was a non-white floor length one. I loved it, and am going to take it to the tailors soon to have it turned into a knee or calve-length skirt that I can wear again.

Clearthinking · 30/12/2018 13:13

I wore a long navy dress as favourite colour and was pregnant so didn't feel right wearing white...

EmmaGrundyForPM · 30/12/2018 13:17

I got married in the early 90s. It never crossed my.mind to wear white/ivory as I look shit in those colours. I opted for a turquoise silk day dress from Monsoon. We've been married 25 years and I've never regretted it

CalmDownPacino · 07/01/2019 13:25

It's a second wedding for me so I have gone for a navy dress. It has got spaghetti straps, a sequin body, tulle skirt and is fishtail style. I really like it.

BoswellsBollocks · 07/01/2019 13:33

I wore a dress with a burgundy bodice and a gold tulle skirt. I didn’t have a veil just wore a gold head band thing.

ShadowsInTheDarkness · 07/01/2019 13:35

Full length black velvet ball gown, with red hair and red ruby shoos. Felt amazing and got lots of compliments. I got it made to measure from a dressmaker on Etsy.

BusterTheBulldog · 07/01/2019 13:39

I wore a champagne and gold dress with beaded and sequinned overlay, I reckon I could get away with wearing it to a very posh ball now but always chicken out!

anniehm · 07/01/2019 14:13

I bought a skirt and blouse from a discount shop - but only a judge office wedding followed by lunch.
