Did anyone do their own makeup..

And be pleased with the finished product? I pretty much have to do mine; very rural and no-one here does it; I could go to counters /book in lessons with MAC to get tips etc but I won't be able to on the day. Did anyone else do theirs and were you happy with the result? How long does it take etc?

TIA!

Yes I did my own makeup, I did have a trail for someone to do it for me but I didn't like the results.
In the end went around some make up counters and picked up my favourite items from each.
I think it took me around 45 minuets but leave yourself plenty of time (I'd left myself an hour)
Plenty of practice and a good moisturiser and primer will really help!

UpABitLate · 22/01/2018 20:00

I did my normal evening makeup. When other people have done it at counters and stuff I've always looked bonkers. I am very fair and so even a little colour or anything starts to get "clowny"! So I looked like me.

Am a touch shiny in the snaps, it was v v hot, but I look so extraordinarily cheerful that it can be overlooked!

And of course 10 years later I just look and say, wow we look so young and happy... Even if the styles change etc.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 22/01/2018 20:01

Yes, i was so shocked at not only the cost but also the insistence on doing a make up rehearsal.

I tested different foundations over a few weeks, took selfies inside and outside. I tried Mac in store but got a similar mineral foundation from Avon. I also stock piled false lashes and practiced applying them, it was tricky but luckily I nailed it on the day before, I had to find the most natural looking ones and trim them to size. I also used lip liner instead of lipstick on the day because it lasted longer. I think you have to invest a bit of time before to save yourself a lot of money, most of my makeup on the day was Avon.

readyforapummelling · 22/01/2018 20:07

I did my own. I had a MAC trial and I ended up looking like coco the fucking clown so that was an hour and £75 I will never see again.

On the day I wore bare minerals powder and got a skilled friend to stick a bit of subtle eyeshadow on. I was happy with the finished product.

After the MAC trial I looked like I had jaundice and quite skeletal. It was a bit scary Confused.

I rarely wear make up but went to a make up counter and told the woman I wanted to look like me but had no idea what I wanted or needed in terms of products. She did my make up step by step and took photos of each step so I could recreate it later. I practised it a few times before the day so I was more confident. I bought most of the products she used and was really happy with it on the day.

danceponydance · 22/01/2018 20:10

I mean she took photos using my phone so I could recreate it.

TittyGolightly · 22/01/2018 20:13

I had a trial with MAC and Bobbi Brown and hated both looks. They made my “natural” look drag-queen-esque.

I spent the money I saved on make up and did it myself. Still love it in the photos and it was 14 years ago!

HarrietSmith · 22/01/2018 20:16

I didn't wear any make up. I was wearing quite an everyday - though smart - dress. There was no professional photographer. Friends took pictures.

LillianGish · 22/01/2018 20:19

I did mine, but then I always do my own make up - I knew how I wanted to look and how to achieve it. If you are not used to wearing make up then practice a lot beforehand and one tip for on the day- put your make up on before you put yours dress on (to avoid any spillages) and make sure you have your make up bag with you for touch ups throughout the day.

Bellamuerte · 22/01/2018 20:20

I did my own makeup - wasn't willing to fork out a huge amount for someone to do my makeup, plus I'm paranoid about them using the same makeup on me as other people and spreading diseases. It looked ok and several people commented that I looked like "me" rather than being made up.

AriadneThread · 22/01/2018 20:23

I did, I got above from a friend and a brand counter honestly can't remember which and I think it looked good. You'd have to ask my guests if they agreed! Took about half an hour on the day but Ih don't wear it normally so I'm not very practiced.

AriadneThread · 22/01/2018 20:23

Of eyelid primer was worth the money. No creases.

OhHolyJesus · 22/01/2018 20:27

I did my own after a nightmare make up trial. It was fine, I even had a spot on the day and it didn't show. I don't like people touching my face so it made sense to just do it myself.

I bought some really nice benefit make up as a treat instead of the make up artist who was late and disorganised.

soupmaker · 22/01/2018 20:34

I did mine. I'd had eyebrows tinted and waxed and eyelashes tinted. Just bought some new foundation and some blusher from the Lancôme counter in Boots. I was blessed with good skin and don't wear a lot of make-up so looked very much like myself in the photos. Did get my hair done though and it was amazing.

Frouby · 22/01/2018 20:35

I am planning on doing my own too. Will book a bridal make up session with Bobbi Brown and am also going to let dd lose on my with her benefit/naked/ mac stuff and see what I like.

Dd is only 13 but really good at doing her own and her friends make up.

BackforGood · 22/01/2018 21:03

Of course. I wanted to look like me on my wedding day, not someone else.

buddy79 · 22/01/2018 21:22

I did my own, had a free “lesson” at Champney’s who used bare minerals stuff at the time and was really happy with it, I practiced the foundation a few times and had plenty of time on the day. I hunted for a different lipstick though and wore false eyelashes which was brave of me looking back! Lovely bridesmaid and I just got ready together, was fun and relaxed and lovely. Would hate to feel ‘caked’ in weird make-up all day.

ugghhreally · 22/01/2018 23:08

I intended to do my own after crazy estimates. I was so stunned at the estimates that I booked myself into a MAC make up lesson. My teacher ended up doing the makeup for my wedding.

Definitely do a lesson, the fee is redeemable against makeup. And subtly ask the artist. You never know...

HeckyPeck · 28/01/2018 13:14

I had 2 free trials and also ended up looking clowny!

I did my own, but I don't wear much makeup anyway - just eyeliner and a bit of concealer. I did get some lash extensions the day before too so I didn't have to worry about mascara running. Took me about 10 mins in the morning think.

Wolfcub · 28/01/2018 13:16

Yes, I generally don’t wear any but a trip to the dior counter sorted me out with a look, products and a written plan to follow

goose1964 · 30/01/2018 22:11

I did mine back then very few people had it done professionally ,I also did my daughter's for her wedding, 2 years ago. I'm nowhere near professional but am quite used to putting other people's make up on

toomanycreambuns · 30/01/2018 22:21

I did mine!

I booked a trial with a make up artist and hated what she did so I booked a make up lesson, bought some new bits and brushes. I just took my time and didn't overdo it.

I was happy because I looked like 'me'. DH knew how I felt about it and when I got to the top of the aisle he whispered that I looked beautiful and my make up was lovely. He's so lovely and I felt amazing. Smile

CointreauVersial · 30/01/2018 22:25

I did my own make-up, because I wanted to look like me, and I was wary of someone else making me look too "done". It wasn't a big flashy wedding, only DSis as bridesmaid (and she did her own too).

I treated myself to some new nail varnish to match the dress, but that's all.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 30/01/2018 22:30

I did mine - didn't occur to me there was an alternative at the time - and looking back now I had no skills! I don't look bad, just very minimalist. I also did my little sister's, she was my bridesmaid and only 12, and had never worn make up before. She looked like Agnetha from Abba...

MumMoselle · 30/01/2018 22:30

Yes, I did. I went to a Clinique counter and had a test session. They supplied a leaflet with a diagram of what to put where and I bought the bits and bobs that I didn't already have.
We had a low key wedding and the make up was low key too. I've never been a plaster it on gal! I have no regrets about the day, I had my hair done professionally as I am completely crap at nice hair Blush
