Rain watch

met office say 'Driest Start for more than 80 years'

Though I utterly adore the heat I'm increasingly aware of how dry the ground is becoming.

So a rain watch thread for those who would welcome a little.

Looking for there to be nothing of significance (light bits and pieces) until Sunday when the sw get some, Wales gets a reasonable amount as does nw England upwards. It looks lie a pretty wet prospect. SE remains dry.

se looks unlikely to see much at all until tuesday and even then it may well not be much. Can't rule out the odd thunderstorm bringing a deluge though.

Busy day - back later!

It's hard to believe after the long winter we've had (especially with all the snow!), that it's still the 'driest for 80 years!' I've noticed the grass is beginning to go brown in places and could do with a really good soaking. Having said that, I think the hard winter has done the garden some good~ my roses are looking better than ever and a rather under-performing buddleia in our back garden, has shot up and should be covered with flowers in a few weeks!

I was expecting some real rain overnight and the TV forecast said we'd get some too, but it doesn't look like we've had much at all. It's all overcast and drizzly at the moment.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/07/2010 12:38

It has been a pathetic attempt at rain today!

its been brilliant for my currants but my new potatoes don't seemed to have actually produced any potatoes.

hey ho, tis how gardening goes!

We have had spitting today (Leicester) for about an hour, now the sun is starting to poke through. Still really warm though!

cyteen · 02/07/2010 12:45

Hey Stretch [waves] Completely off topic but do you remember offering to recommend me a florist a while back? Would be interested if so

moonmother · 02/07/2010 12:50

Cloudy start here in Bedfordshire, and it was cooler- had to wear a cardy for the school run.

Had a couple of really light showers a little while ago.

Within the last hour humidity has shot right up and the blue skys starting to appear.

All the middle of my lawns gone all brown and crunchy, went out Tues to find a sprinkler, they are like gold dust in these parts, lol.

Managed to find one and have given it a couple of good soakings. Veg doing really well here- have only been growing veg for past 2 years and this is the best season so far.

Stretch · 02/07/2010 12:56

Hi! Oooh, is somebody getting married...?!

Ok, can't seem to get the website up, but she has a facebook page. Linky

cyteen · 02/07/2010 14:28

Thanks matey!

mankyscotslass · 02/07/2010 14:29

Nowt here since the rain overnight.

It's been a mix of sunshine and cloud, witha bit of a breeze.

Still warm and muggy too.

brimfull · 02/07/2010 14:29

we had quite a bit of rain this morning
I am near bournemouth
stil cloudy

throckenholt · 02/07/2010 14:32

I was up in Islay a couple of weeks ago - the distilleries had had to stop production because they had run out of water. Hard to believe on the west coast of Scotland. But we were there for a fortnight and only had half a day of rain.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/07/2010 15:45

golly throckenholt - that will put up prices!

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 02/07/2010 16:23

Throckenholt, I had better warn FIL that his tipple is going to get more expensive!

No rain at all here, have managed to get three loads of washing done and on the line!

throckenholt · 02/07/2010 17:13

well it takes a few years to mature - so I guess it will affect prices and amount available in 5-10 years time.

mankyscotslass · 03/07/2010 20:59

Nothing here today so far, clooudy/sunny in turns!

Forecast for it overnight though. or at least the early hours, so we will see.

The Woodhead Reservoir looked very low in Friday nights paper.

dbm · 03/07/2010 21:23

I can see big fat dark rain filled clouds over the mountains in West Scotland. It is still dry here though.
I really want it to rain for a couple of days for the sake of the veg although as we're on school holidays that wish seems a wee bit unfare.

mankyscotslass · 03/07/2010 21:26

Mu mum lives on the banks of the Clyde, she has just gone home and says its cooler and grey today... we are due there in august, I'nm sure it will rain!

dbm · 03/07/2010 21:40

it keeps the hills green and it rarely rains all day, honest!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/07/2010 08:42

heavy rain warning for much of western scotland this am and afternoon. Advisories for rest of Scotland.

uk very much split - unsettled with some rain for northern and and some western parts on and off through the week.

SE stays dry.

mankyscotslass · 04/07/2010 17:04

Good drying weather here today, I got three loads out!

Occasional bit of drizzle in a stiff wind, but nothing that hindered the drying!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/07/2010 20:03

looks like its been pretty disuptive in parts of Scotland - heavy rain and high winds

OP posts:
vintage · 04/07/2010 20:13

It1s been a blooming awful day here torrential rain anf gale force winds millions of leaves and branches etc lying around outside

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/07/2010 20:58

OP posts:
dbm · 04/07/2010 21:37

lovely dry breezy evening after a bit of a wild afternoon - plenty of very heavy rain and very strong winds; poor garden is looking a bit beaten but once the wind drops the plants will love the soaking

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/07/2010 10:01

Theres def a north south divide this week with the weather. 'Up north' unsettled and cool 'Down South' settled, dry and may well become very hot by the weekend

mankyscotslass · 05/07/2010 10:03

Well it looks bright here today too, just as well as I need to strip all the beds and wash on a boil wash!

Nice and breezy, few grey clouds but nothing that looks like it means business.
