Hello

ahem.

(please remember am an utter amateur and am not liable for any wrong decisions you make based on my guesswork forecasts Please use the met office for your official forecasts.

outlook for tonight:

cloud cover tonight will help keep temps 'up' in many parts of England, esp se as compared to last night. However there will still be a deep and penetrating frost over where there is little could cover and met office invent has very low temps in parts of Wales and Scotland.

Snow showers across the NE and southern Scotland spreading westwards. also in East Anglia and parts of the SE

Tomorrow: sees showers across East Anglia and the south east with possibly a Thames Streamer developing. The showers could spread quite far west. also showers scattered about central England in general.

Met office have advisories out for Sunday and Monday. Models disagree with the risk but in general it covers southern England, Midlands and Wales. Both intensity and extent are still very unclear at the moment.

After that? The gfs 12Z had an odd moment today and brought the cold to an end on the 13th. other models disagree, some are very snowy. We await with interest.

I love that first link ugly - never seen it before

I think you are right about the precip. not sure if the very persistent and heavy snow over Kent is a classic 'Thames streamer'? what do you reckon?

FuriousGeorge · 09/01/2010 16:35

It has snowed on and off all day near Melton Mowbray-no gritters around here as we are miles from a main road. The snow is very powdery, not wet like the snow we normally get.

I noticed my dad has bought his sheep in closer to the dutch barns, normally this time of year they would be about a mile away.No lambs due til March hopefully.

uglymugly · 09/01/2010 16:42

kitten, I'm not very sure what a Thames streamer is, but I think it's the consequence of part of an easterly stream picking up moisture from the Thames estuary, as opposed to adjacent bands in the stream which are over land. I'll have to do some googling.

Snowing in London now, apparently.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2010 17:11

that's how I understand it, with the wind direction being ene.

eandh · 09/01/2010 17:45

snowed very very heavily from about 1 to 4.30pm in west Kent (Maidstone) although since then no snow and although it looked very bad only about an inch has laid (DH cleared the car off this morning and roughly an inch on top) twas very very windy though

seeker · 09/01/2010 18:19

5t's been snowing more or less all afternoon here near Sittingbourne.

duckyfuzz · 09/01/2010 18:29

we had another couple of inches overnight here and its been snowing on and off through the day, wind really picking up now but the good news is my car has finally moved, thanks to the stirling efforts of DH and our lovely neighbour!

NoahAndTheWhale · 09/01/2010 19:10

A tiny bit of snow in beds/herts border. The invent thing on metoffice suggests precipitation through the night but I'm not convinced.

seeker · 10/01/2010 04:47

It's raining!

whomovedmychocolate · 10/01/2010 06:07

North Oxfordshire - minus 10 but no snow as yet but snow clouds appearing as the light increases. We're planning on heading out to the local shops at 8am before it gets grim.

Am not impressed. Spent many hours clearing the driveway and pushing drivers stuck in the snow away yesterday and it looks like it'll all be in vain.

However my super 'bash it with a rake till it breaks up and rake it away to the sides' of the driveway seems to be working on keeping it clear so far.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2010 07:47

the widespread snow that was forecast doesn't seem to have materialised in the manner that was expected. Indeed as Seeker says at the moment some slightly milder air has come in from the continent. We shall see if the snow gets going later today or not. tbh I don't know if it will. I'll have a look what happened later but am off out soon. (first time we've taken the car out in this weather....)

not quite sure looking at it where it went wrong. hey ho.
also not quite sure about this week, just looks like a really messy picture with a mix of rain sleet and snow.
sorry!

mankyscotslass · 10/01/2010 14:30

We have persistent but very fine flakes of snow, not managing to settle though.

Dh getting ready to travel.

Lilyloo · 10/01/2010 14:32

It is much milder here today and dp said some of the snow is starting to melt (fingers crossed) However still forecasting snow for tonight and tom on metcheck , not sure how reliable that is though!

mankyscotslass · 10/01/2010 14:46

I know, it said snow all day here on Metcheck, but I think that's computer generated and not 100% accurate anyway.

Met office now saying light snow flurries today and tomorrow, so seems to be more accurate.

NoahAndTheWhale · 10/01/2010 16:23

Little bits of snow occasionally here.

FuriousGeorge · 10/01/2010 17:35

It's been snowing heavily almost all day today, but bloomin' typical, the day it snows the most,it also turns warmer,so it is starting to thaw now.It is horrible, damp and drippy outside, but still snowing.Very odd.All in we've only had about 2 inches of snow in 3 weeks.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2010 19:36

horrid FG.

been v. light snow here, and just the teeniest start of a thaw. We went out in the car today for the first time. So many trees and branches down, some partially blocking the roads and then covered in snow. scary stuff.

OP posts:
littlerach · 10/01/2010 19:38

We have had snow forecsat for tomorrow night, then tues and Wed.

Don't think I belive them though as they forecast that today, we cancelled my family coming up, then nothing.

Wiltshire.

Lulumama · 10/01/2010 19:42

started to thaw here in merseyside, we're very near the sea. ice and snow around, but i's been melting today. 3 degrees earlier. we;'ve had 3 inches of snow max, it has been the ice that's been a problem

metchecck says we;ll get some snow tonnight and tomorrow, but that's it

and sky news has downgraded their weather forecast too

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2010 19:50

flash warning for heavy snow for Yorkshire

still lots of disagreement how deep and how prolonged the thaw will be. It isn't necessarily over, it could just be a bit of a milder interlude

also tuesday into wednesday is still looking interesting. Conditions will be marginal for snow, it could be lots of snow, it could be a mix of snow and rain or it could be rain I suppose.

OP posts:
Lilyloo · 10/01/2010 20:06

Have had light snow here since about 4pm blowing sideways but sticking.

fatsatsuma · 10/01/2010 20:14

I hate this kind of gradual thaw, when everything starts looking really dirty and the snow slowly disappears

However, just looking at the Met Office invent rainfall map, and 0300 Tues shows a huge and very serious looking mass of snow off the south west coast. I don't have as much faith in the invent maps as I did 24 hours ago, but it does look like quite a significant amount of snow.

Don't know what will happen to it after 0300 on Tues as that is currently the last time slot. But maybe Kitten has some further insights?

NoahAndTheWhale · 10/01/2010 20:19

I've been looking at the invent map too and it keeps saying we will have rainfall (or snowfall I suppose) and we don't. How do they get their actual figures I wonder?

hippipotamiHasLost77lbs · 10/01/2010 20:39

It has been thawing all day here in Surrey. The local BBC forcast had promised a day of snow but we had about 3 flakes before it turned to sleet. Temperatures are above freezing for the first time in 5 days. The snow is turning to grey sludge on the streets and paths. The local park is no longer a sledging/snowboarding haven and the snowmen, igloos and snowforts (as well as the snow mini and 'snofa' built locally) are slowly melting away
