Hello

ahem.

(please remember am an utter amateur and am not liable for any wrong decisions you make based on my guesswork forecasts Please use the met office for your official forecasts.

outlook for tonight:

cloud cover tonight will help keep temps 'up' in many parts of England, esp se as compared to last night. However there will still be a deep and penetrating frost over where there is little could cover and met office invent has very low temps in parts of Wales and Scotland.

Snow showers across the NE and southern Scotland spreading westwards. also in East Anglia and parts of the SE

Tomorrow: sees showers across East Anglia and the south east with possibly a Thames Streamer developing. The showers could spread quite far west. also showers scattered about central England in general.

Met office have advisories out for Sunday and Monday. Models disagree with the risk but in general it covers southern England, Midlands and Wales. Both intensity and extent are still very unclear at the moment.

After that? The gfs 12Z had an odd moment today and brought the cold to an end on the 13th. other models disagree, some are very snowy. We await with interest.

Just started to snow here again ( S Bedsfordshire) coming down quite steadily.

FuriousGeorge · 08/01/2010 09:21

Light snow here.DH and I are planning to go out for lunch to Oakham today,it will be very pretty there in the snow.

arionater · 08/01/2010 09:57

Snowing again in Cambridge after showers on and off during yesterday (including one heavy one) and some more at some point overnight. We still only have a couple of inches on the ground though and the roads are quite good. It's also not that cold compared to elsewhere: about -2 at the moment, I suppose it's stayed a bit "warmer" because we haven't had clear skies.

petunia · 08/01/2010 10:03

We woke up to a light covering of snow here (Leicester) and there are a few flakes falling now.
I confessed to DDs this morning that as much as I love snow, I'm beginning to get just a little bit fed up of it now. It's all the de-icing the car, remembering hats, gloves, scarves etc, that comes with going out in this cold weather.

petunia · 08/01/2010 10:05

Oh and OYBBK, congratulations on getting your own 'weather department!'

AvadaKedavra · 08/01/2010 10:09

Clear blue skies and sunshine - this is going to be a very cold night isn't it?

thegrammerpolicesic · 08/01/2010 10:11

All sunny and lovely here.

Heating being temperamental and even my fan heater is making dubious overworked noises

silverfrog · 08/01/2010 11:53

thanks for the update, arionater. not sure what dh is going to end up doing.

ds now has a strop on becasue "we are making things difficult" ( obv him going back to uni is more important than dh doing his job - you know, the one that pays the tuition fees ) and he is probably going to get a lift with some friends who are going back on Saturday.

No mention of how all his stuff is going to get there , so we will wait with bated breath to see what the master plan is

we are still iced up here in surrey. main roads ok, but the development we are on is sheet ice, so can't get off it to go anywhere...

mid-east kent is also hard hit. dd1's school os closed due to iced over roads.

thegrammerpolicesic · 08/01/2010 12:01

No longer sunny - clouded over and tiniest bit of snow before now but nothing major. Totally fed up with it and want it gone now!

mankyscotslass · 08/01/2010 12:03

Gorgeous sunny weather. Had to slip walk all the way to tescos for some bits.

FIl was going to drive me but the diesel in his car is frozen.

Pavements lethal, but tescos stocked ok.

Will this weekends snow get this far north Kitten?

itsmeolord · 08/01/2010 12:15

Any idea what will happen in Essex, am herts essex border. Met office keeps saying heavy snow for today through till monday but nothing so far.....

More snow not good by the way, I am trying to organise picking up dsd from the medway in Kent......

NoahAndTheWhale · 08/01/2010 12:19

I don't want lots of snow over the weekend as DD starts school on Monday. I would like her to be able to start

lostinwales · 08/01/2010 13:44

Beautiful morning here, all the windows had stunning jack frost finger paintings on the inside! It's amazing to have so much cold and ice due to our sticking into the seaness, not much snow (last friday eve and thurs morning but NOTHING is defrosting so no school but beautiful blue skys and crispness, sledging here we come!

lostinwales · 08/01/2010 13:46

Sorry forgot, saying here is if the snow clears it's fine, but if it stays on the ground it's waiting for more. Seems to have worked for the last spell anyway.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2010 15:00

mini update - am seriously running out of oomph - 4 mile walk in what was often knee deep snow is verrrry tiring at the end of this week! and am taking a good mix of painkillers to keep going. still have bread and some fresh fruit and veg. sainsburys was absolutely packed, but with the exception of salt had stock in everything we wanted (just couldnt be fussy)

looks broadly as in morning update today. But tomorrow afternoon sees the new system of snow coming in from the ease over southern areas. Mostly doesnt look partic. heavy at the moment but it will be persistent and looks widespread across much of the south. Basically at the moment it looks like the risk starts of for eastern side of south and as we go through Sunday and monday the risk transfers steadily to the south west. Main questions are: how much snow, how extenisve will it be? I can't answer either of those questions.

updated warnings

Breakdown next week? models are less bullish about this. I think a fairly likely scenario would be a messy sleet snow mix for mid week in the south, then the question is: will it go back to being very cold, or will it become more mild?

And a word of caution. watch out for falling icicles!!!

SE warnings of up to 20cm in the Sussex/Kent areas over saturday night.

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 08/01/2010 21:33

Just had a snow shower but its stopped, not too heavy.

sowhatitsonlysnow · 08/01/2010 21:35

Where do you get 20cm? Your link says 2-5 cms, locally 10cm.

sowhatitsonlysnow · 08/01/2010 21:36

......apologies....helps if I scroll up/down

FuriousGeorge · 09/01/2010 10:21

More snow for us last night,a couple of inches, more than we've had altogether so far.

Its snowing again now,we are trying to persuade the dd's to go sledging, but they aren't interested.

mankyscotslass · 09/01/2010 11:04

No more snow overnight, sunny with very light flurries this morning.

And DH has his new car!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2010 12:37

Hi all, trying to juggle a bit of normal life with model watching.

Widespread snow for much of England and Wales overnight and into tomorrow. In general I think it will be light but persistent. However special note to parts of Sussex and Kent where it looks like some very significant accumulations will form over night and by the end of tomorrow. With strong winds too there will be drifting. Dangerous driving conditions and there is the potential for further power cuts.

I've discussed mid week a little in the potential breakdown thread. I don't have any more info other than once again it looks like conditions could be very difficult indeed.

Please keep an ear/eye on local radio and met office warnings.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2010 12:38

Manky hooray for your dh. Perhaps, he ought not to take it too far until the weather settles I foresee a tale of woe!

dd and dh are sledging while I tidy and hoover a bit. House was falling apart rather

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2010 14:15

I posted this on the "weather links" topic, but though it was useful to post it here as well:

www.yr.no/satellitt/1.5941760 is an animation of 48-hours worth of satellite images showing the clouds. This one is interesting at the moment because it shows a band of cloud moving NE-SW and a rotating area of cloud moving up from France.

Looking at: www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/surface_pressure.html there's a trough marked on the leading edge of the cloud coming from France and (from what I understand) that'll be the area where the precipitation will fall.

I've also read elsewhere that there is snow falling in the East Sussex coast area and moving inland.
