An unusually early warning for the low possibility of some extreme rainfall for NE Scotland at the end of the week. Note the text of the warning!

Please keep a close eye on this one and be prepared to act if necessary. Ensure that if you live in an at risk area that you are ready.

We weren't even the subject of a weather warning overnight and our local school had water pushing it's way up through the toilets and sinks. Luckily only one toilet block flooded. Been in our house 10 years and our front garden flooded temporally this morning, but it was the worse I've seen it. Really hope we're not going to get a really wet month or two - it's bad enough what's happening in Scotland, but the land is going to be saturated and unable to cope.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 20/10/2023 15:20

Heart goes out to those in most affected areas. It's not too bad here in Whitley Bay. We are on a yellow warning which is not unusual here during the winter months. It is relentless though. My elderly Mum hates it and has decided to stay mainly in her bedroom today. I'll pop in later to check on her.

I was going through the power banks etc last night and DD who is 11 has now become interested in my prepping. We have therefore replenished the 'Fuckit backpack' and have decided upon a plan as to who is responsible for what in the event of an emergency (get the cat in cat carrier etc) as there is only me and her at home We are going to practise some drills over the weekend.

To be fair, the council eventually sorted out our street due to historical flooding by installing new storm drains and an underground overflow basin on adjacent farmland. We have had other emergencies in the past though (fire for example) so I don't think it's a bad idea to be calmly prepared. I was explaining to DD last night that the fire brigade sometimes evacuate people as a precation and it's best to be prepared in the eventuality that it ever happens.

A plane has come off the runway at Leeds Bradford airport too, thankfully no one injured, that could have been a lot worse.

Bunlord · 20/10/2023 15:45

There’s lots of localised flooding in Suffolk, in areas that never usually flood. It seemed to happen very quickly.

Papillon23 · 20/10/2023 15:47

Suffolk pretty bad - my brother has just pulled a stranger stuck in floodwaters out of the window of their car - the water was thigh deep and getting deeper. Their car had been swept sideways by the current.

The neighbours have had family in their house for over 100 years and this is the worst they have ever seen it.

I really hate being unable to help them - all the roads to their house are impassable.

Hope everyone is staying indoors and if told to leave then leave .

BobTheCobblet · 20/10/2023 16:05

I’ve just had to collect my ds from school as the bus didn’t turn up. We are in west Cheshire and I have never seen the roads like it in my 40 years living here. Large floods with cars abandoned, presumably broken down. One very busy main road has a van stopped in a flood across both lanes so traffic having to go past in turns but no police or traffic lights. I went through just after 2pm so it is only going to get worse as rush hour kicks in. The worst thing is there is more rain to come.

AyeOopDuck · 20/10/2023 16:52

Got two friends struggling to get home as Ilkeston in Derbyshire has road closed off. Sandiacre canal banks burst, I have never heard of a canal overflowing before. Some houses flooded village over from me towards Draycott and they have deliberately flooded the local park to me.

justasking111 · 20/10/2023 16:53

Well the tide rose so roads in the area flooded. Bottom of our road closed now due to flooding. Some roads closed which connect to other areas. Cut off from our village. The rain has eased but there's so much run off from the hills . The secondary school road closed now buses and cars struggling to get in and out.

Things will ease when the tide recedes again. There's not much wind.

PuppyMonkey · 20/10/2023 16:57

@AyeOopDuck just announced that Ilkeston Fair WILL be open from 5pm. Not that anyone will be able to get to it! Confused

Ciri · 20/10/2023 17:17

Ds has just had to wade through a flooded river to get home from school which was slightly terrifying. It’s generally way, way beneath the road bridge but it was well over his knees and he’s a lanky 6 foot sixth former. Just relived he’s home safely. We’re in Notts. There are so many road closures it’s impossible to get anywhere in the village areas.

That’s quite frankly irresponsible. It’s chaos around here

TheOhGodOfHangovers · 20/10/2023 17:22

Meadowhall area flooded, Rotherham football stadium looking decidedly iffy.

We’re very fortunate at the moment. The worst thing to happen thus far has been a leaky conservatory. Wind has been worse than the rain. Thoughts are with all those in badly hit areas.

Stay safe all.

Erewash Borough Council say they’ll keep the situation under review so that’s reassuring when someone inevitably comes a cropper.Hmm

BiddyPop · 20/10/2023 18:02

Trains delayed over an hour in Dublin this evening due to flooding on the line...currently going at walking pace on the train and hoping it keeps moving (but I may bail out at the next station as I could get a bus instead there).

BiddyPop · 20/10/2023 18:04

For those with tide to consider, on days when air pressure is low, tide can rise higher than normal just because of that. So keep an extra eye around high tide times.

I am glad your DS is safe, but that is a really dangerous thing to do.

Wanttobeok · 20/10/2023 18:27

We were meant to be going on holiday today but couldn't get more than a mile from our house due to flooded and closed roads so we have given up and going to try again tomorrow morning 😢

Wanttobeok · 20/10/2023 18:27

In South Yorkshire

deeplybaffled · 20/10/2023 18:44

We’re on the Wirral and despite not being even in an Amber area, lots of the rivers and brooks have burst their banks. This is around half a mile away

It was dangerous but not quite as dangerous as it sounds. He was on the main road, the river goes under the road and had flooded over the road but there are walls each side of the road which were higher than the flood water. He had no choice in order to get back home. I made him promise he wouldn’t do it if it was over knee level but it was a bit deeper than he thought (he had an idea of how deep it was since someone ahead of him had to do it too).

Bimblesalong · 20/10/2023 20:22

We are in w Cheshire too. Our village roads were all flooded this morning and the local high school was closed as waters were over a foot deep around the entrances. A couple of tractors managed to pump some of the roads clear so we could get in and out of the village but I’m sure they’ll flood again overnight with the runoff and more rain.

BobTheCobblet · 20/10/2023 20:56

Yes my dd goes to christleton, I’d got back home after dropping her off to a text that school was closed.
