Bbc good food encouraging bbqs?

flowerexpress · 13/08/2022 12:16

Just had a notification pop up on my phone from bbc good food re bbq food recipes and saying they had it covered etc.

Did anyone else have this? Is that not weird and irresponsible given the current risk of wildfires, supermarkets taking disposable bbqs off the shelves etc? I don't pay for the app so couldn't see what it was actually all about but seems very strange.

You can cook BBQ food indoors in a cooker and eat outside 🙄

Theimpossiblegirl · 13/08/2022 12:18

My BBQ is in a safe spot in my garden and runs on gas.
It's only disposable/portable BBQs that are a problem because people are irresponsible.

FlibbertyGiblets · 13/08/2022 12:18

Do you not BBQ at home, taking the usual safety precautions? Not everyone uses disp BBQs <strokes Weber Genesis fondly>

FlibbertyGiblets · 13/08/2022 12:19

Your garden must be huge if there is a risk of a wildfire in it. I would agree that in your case, best not to BBQ with a disposable. I hope that helps.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 13/08/2022 12:23

Its disposable bbqs that are the main risk as tbey are on the ground normally on grass.

Actual bbqs in gardens are much safer and most likely placed in safe places as they are used more frequently

Everybody's garden is tinder-dry and at risk from fire at the moment.

Cornettoninja · 13/08/2022 12:30

I’m with you actually OP. People will do what they’re going to do but I don’t see why anyone would actually want to encourage it in those who otherwise wouldn’t have fancied it.

Farmers can’t harvest crops because everything is so dry the slightest spark could turn into a massive blaze very quickly. It’s not really the best time for deliberately adding fire starting obstacles into the mix. Even bbq’s run on gas - can’t say I’d be messing about with gas cylinders at the moment personally.

Depends where you live - ours is not tinder dry in North Derbyshire.

stuntbubbles · 13/08/2022 12:32

Push notifications are generally pre-planned and scheduled, someone at the start of summer will have written that and scheduled it, and no one’s updated the plan.

I don’t know about you but my garden is surrounded by wooden fences and very dried out ground and shrubs/trees/grass and very close to my house! I’m less concerned about fires in fields than I am ones that are capable of destroying a row of houses.

Runwalkskijump · 13/08/2022 12:34

Actually those saying it is disposable bbqs only shpukd speak to our local fire brigade who are saying none should be used as they are dealing with more fires in peoples gardens due to tinder like conditions.

All it takes is a small amber or spark at the moment.

Runwalkskijump · 13/08/2022 12:34

*should

This was the impression I had gotten from the news too hence why I was surprised to see bbc good food sending round the notification.

Yep. My garden is 2m wide, as are all the neighbouring gardens. All dry as a bone, with wooden fences in between. A terrace backing onto another terrace. All it would take is one idiot barbecuing or smoking and half the neighbourhood would go up.

I don’t think people realise that when the grass and ground is this dry then so are the roots which is where fire will spread. It can be really hard to put out properly even if you’ve a bucket of water to hand.

good for you but great swathes of the country has these conditions at the moment.

Abnormal circumstances that can lead to damage and personal danger should really take priority don’t you think?

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 13/08/2022 12:40

2 nights ago there was a big fire in my city where a fence went up in flames, spread to the 2 houses on either side of the fence, loads of people evacuated from their homes due to fears of the gas line exploding and the 2 houses have significant damage to upper floors.

But yeah sure, setting fire to stuff in your garden when there's a drought and everything is basically just tinder is a great idea!

shoofly · 13/08/2022 12:41

I'm in Northern Ireland, my garden isn't tinder dry. We've a gas barbecue in a shaded spot on a concrete patio.

We'll be having a barbecue later because we've a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and flash flooding tomorrow and rain into Monday

Your garden is 6 foot wide?

stuntbubbles · 13/08/2022 12:48

@bellac11 At the far end, yeah. Width of the house at the house end (which still isn’t that wide!) then it narrows, as do all the neighbouring houses. Most people have their patios and barbecues at the far end too, as that’s the sunny end.

Cornettoninja · 13/08/2022 12:50

@shoofly sounds great, but presumably you can look up any bbq recipes should you feel the need?

The point is that random headlines encourage people to do/behave in certain ways that otherwise they wouldn’t have. Headlines like ‘Fire service advises people not to have bbqs because of dry conditions’ encourages people not to have bbq’s when otherwise they would have. Headlines like ‘8 mouthwatering bbq recipes’ encourages people to have bbq’s which does the opposite.

Billions of dollars/pounds/whatever flows through the economy on a daily basis due to advertising. We’re a suggestible lot, it’s just how our brains work.

Eightiesfan · 13/08/2022 12:51

I think you are BU, magazine and online content will have been decided months ago.

To be honest, we have been using our BBQ a few times a week. Like the PP our BBQ is in a shaded patio area. We never leave it unattended so the risk of fire is minimal, even if any errant sparks manage to fly across the patio onto the grass.

However, if you’re going to BBQ in the middle of the straw like lawn while you sit in the shade indoors, well that’s another matter.

flowerexpress · 13/08/2022 12:56

Admittedly, I don't know anything about how these push notifications are planned or how far in advance. Would it not have been possible for it to be reviewed under the circumstances (genuine question)? I realise ppl have differing opinions about this but I'd have thought bbc good food would have wanted to play it safe.

OP posts:
shoofly · 13/08/2022 12:58

I haven't seen the ads, have no need of them tbh, but the point I was trying (& obviously failed) to make is that all of the country is not in the same position and ads are also planned months in advance 🤔

Cakeandcardio · 13/08/2022 13:04

BBC is for people outside of London / the South too.

SpringIntoChaos · 13/08/2022 13:04

@hotfroth not mine! I have no grass or plants...merely a very large slabbed patio and a brick wall (sounds grim but it's actually very nice!!!) I'm not intending on firing up my gas bbq, but if I wanted to, I'm as sure as I can be that it would be perfectly safe in my garden 🤷‍♀️
