Hi all, currently holidaying in the very Western most bit of Cornwall, the weather forecast for early tomorrow morning is calling for 9 metre waves in "our" cove and 85kmph winds! We are right on an exposed bit of coastline.

I'm quite excited but also fairly anxious! We have loads of food in, torch's, batteries, firewood etc so we should be ok, we are due to be checking out by 10am tomorrow anyway (gutted) so we are packing today so we don't have to hoik it all up the cliff to the car tomorrow.

Wish me luck!

You'll be fine and it'll be fantastic to see. I live in Penzance and we've had some incredible seas thus week!

emmetgirl · 01/11/2019 16:13

That should say THIS week!

TwattingDog · 01/11/2019 16:17

Where are you OP? How far above the waves?

Don't do anything daft like go near a cliff edge in the wind.

Here's the current wind and it's movement.

Hello! We've been to Penzance a few times this week, went to see Maleficent at the cinema last Saturday before we could check into the cottage.

We are staying in Cape Cornwall, in the little cottage by the car park, it's my happy place, we come here every year. Smile

I normally live in Dorset so the waves I'm used to seeing are calm, small and slow ones. I don't think I've ever seen a wave bigger than me... let alone one over four times bigger! I'm quite excited...

Hi @TwattingDog, we are quite high above the waves... see picture, don't worry, I'm far too anxious a soul to go too close to it if it's gets worse, we are not on a cliff top too much, unlike last year when we stayed here!

We've already tidied away the patio furniture and moved the table as much as we can into the side.

Ah yes, I know the cottages (only in passing!). Here's nearby in sunny weather, with complimentary dog.

You're nice and high, so that's something! You might not see much in the dark though... I love a good storm.

Here's their forecast for tonight:

YELLOW WARNING: GALES

VALID FROM 04:00 SATURDAY
VALID UNTIL 18:00 SATURDAY

Good morning all.

Not good news unfortunately.

The same area of low pressure that is expected to bring a spell of heavy rain and we have a separate warning for now brings the theat of strong winds.

Gusts of 55mph to 60mph are likely inland with gusts of 70mph around coasts and over higher ground.

The strongest gusts like most likely to affect coastal areas of the Southwest where isolated gusts of up to 80mph are possible in very exposed locations during the morning.

Winds are expected to slowly ease from the west during the afternoon.

High tides are around 08:30 depending on where you are.

Please take care as always.

Oh! Is that Kenidjack Castle? We went to walk to Geevor the other day and only made it as far as Botallack before our waterproofs gave up the ghost and we had to give up and get the bus back to St Just!

That was Botallack last summer. I love going round there, you occasionally find a piece of amethyst!

LadyFlumpalot · 01/11/2019 17:27

Oh yes, I love Botallack. If I was braver (possibly stupid) I'd be out tomorrow morning for photos of the Crown engine houses.

Oh jeez... 95kmph winds and 9.5metre waves at 6am...

Battening down the hatches, torch's put out, phones and tablets fully charged before bed.

Anybody else expecting to be in the firing line of this?

Ooh, high tide should be spectacular for you!

It could be an interesting morning across the county. Be careful driving back up country, the run off from the fields on to the roads will be immense.

I'm on the south coast, and much further up the county so although we'll be more sheltered, we're also at the top of the hill the town is built on, so we'll still feel some good wind!

I've started a more widespread thread, rather late I'm afraid.

No worries Kitten. Both kids awoken in a terror just now, rain hitting the windows loud enough to sound like it's breaking them. Tucked the kids back in downstairs in hastily made sofa/floor beds and the help of 24/7 POP on the TV.
