The A6 is closed because part of it goes over the Goyt near Bridgemount. Every road with a bridge over the Goyt in the area is closed as a safety precaution.

I saw the chinook on my drive to work this morning.

SistemaAddict · 02/08/2019 11:26

The Peak Forest canal at Marple is pretty full.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/08/2019 13:11

You may catch some quick showers this afternoon, looks like they are going to drift a little further west.

Unfortunately the met office have issued a thunderstorm warning for Sunday for your region. Thunderstorms can be very hit and miss, even in warning areas, so I'll keep crossing my fingers that they miss if they develop.

The Goyt at Marple Bridge is currently swollen but fine. We've had a lovely walk along the canal helping holiday makers with the locks, walked across the aqueduct and then across to the river. They've only dropped the reservoir 20cm though and I thought they needed to drop it by 2 metres.

SistemaAddict · 02/08/2019 15:56

March after heavy rain and then today. It's up about 4ft maybe.
Some idiot told me it would be "quite impressive" if the dam broke as we'd have a tidal wave through Marple Bridge HmmTwat

Some people are plain stupid.

I had to guide a mahoosive (for our river) boat under a bridge today when I was out for a walk. (Down south) Some people off on holiday hadn't thought things through. They had inches to spare between them and under the bridge span (they scraped their canopy) and therefore they had to duck below their cabin and steer blindly while I shouted vague instructions and encouragement.

It was very trusting of them really. Especially as I forgot to warn them as the next bridge along was substantially lower. Blush

Very similar thing happened in the USA a couple of years ago.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oroville_Dam_crisis

The valley basin was evacuated after extensive damage to the spillway. It was all fixed with no collapse.

BeerMyHold · 02/08/2019 16:29

I can still hear the helicopter on and off. Press conference later apparently

Chaosandmadness · 02/08/2019 16:51

I'm supposed to be going on holiday in the area tomorrow (buxworth) but have decided against it as I don't want to add to the pressure everyone is under. They need less people in the area not more. Keeping my fingers crossed for every one living there and hope you all are safe Flowers

TapasForTwo · 02/08/2019 19:50

The weather is very localised at the moment. DD and I went to Meadowhall in Sheffield this afternoon and came out to a very wet car park. A few miles along the M1 and everywhere was dry.

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/08/2019 20:19

Re localised weather - I'm in Chesterfield, about 10 miles south of Meadowhall, and it hasn't rained at all today.

Frouby · 02/08/2019 20:24

I was just off Meadowhall junction today fir a couple of hours. Came home, went about 3 miles towards Barnsley and it looked like they had had a downpour, went another couple of miles and my washing bone dry.

SistemaAddict · 02/08/2019 20:54

No rain in Marple Bridge today but lots of dark clouds around tea time. Looking ok for tomorrow and clear overnight tonight. This is the only time in my life I'm hoping that the forecast thunderstorms DON'T happen as I love storms normally.
My mum lives a mile up the hill. It can pour down here and miss her completely. "What hailstones?" She'll ask. "The ones the size of chick peas!" "Oh, we e not had any here." Weather is bizarre, fascinating and bloody scary. I love extremes of weather, except for heat, unless it's causing damage to anything or anyone. A wild storm is my favourite but definitely hoping we don't get any on Sunday.

wowfudge · 02/08/2019 20:55

Well it's super quiet just down the road from Whaley. I did a big shop on my way home from work as there'll be no Ocado delivery and the Coop in Disley is the closest shop open we can get to. Went through the road block again to get home. The police are still turning round traffic trying to get up the A6.

Jackreacherismyhero · 02/08/2019 21:46

@wowfudge yeah it's like a ghost town. We've been with friends all day in Disley and the traffic is only going one way! We went back to the palace hotel in Buxton this afternoon but then they said we could go back home and get the dog as we were both out when it was evacuated so she had to spend the night alone which frankly was horrendous. I rang that number on Facebook but they wouldn't let anyone in.

So now we have the dog but can't go back to the hotel as we have the dog! So we're booking an air bnb

wowfudge · 02/08/2019 21:49

Hope you get sorted. DP says Airbnb are offering free accommodation. At least poor doggy is back with you now.

RaymondReddington · 02/08/2019 22:01

@Jackreacherismyhero are you having to pay? We’ve offered a room in our house on Facebook last night but we’re about 20 mile away from Whaley Bridge so probably too far for a lot of people. The thought of evacuating your home and not knowing what might happen is awful.

Pm me if you have no where tonight or over the weekend

SistemaAddict · 03/08/2019 12:07

So Boris has promised us a new dam. His magic money tree is very fast growing isn't it. Dodgy but stable. Is this the new strong and stable?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/08/2019 12:21

I don't believe he has the faintest clue what a new dam would involve.

OP posts:
TinselAngel · 03/08/2019 12:24

Only a man anticipating a general election soon, would make such promises.

SistemaAddict · 03/08/2019 12:27

I'm not sure he has the faintest idea about anything!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/08/2019 20:00

Unfortunately we still need to keep an eye on storms tomorrow afternoon/evening. Let's hope they stay away from the region.

OP posts:
SistemaAddict · 03/08/2019 20:10

It started raining a little earlier but thankfully stopped. The sky looks stormy but has done since late afternoon. Hoping the rain changes course overnight.

picklemepopcorn · 03/08/2019 21:02

The forecast is alarming. I keep checking in, scrutinising the map.

Unescorted · 03/08/2019 21:18

We haven't had rain in Hayfield. It is so localised around here.

@jackreacherismyhero we can dog sit for you if that makes it easier. I would offer you beds but I don't have spares.
