It seems to be starting to get going properly now with the first major storm of the season.
Florence is now a Cat 4 and is heading for the Carolinas.

Is it still a 4?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/09/2018 20:35

It is, the wind strength has lessened a little but the wind field has expanded, I wonder if she's going to go through an eyeball replacement cycle.

www.nhc.noaa.gov

is where all the news outlets get their official data from.

Oybbk I seem to remember earlier today reading that she went through an eye wall replacement yesterday, and was now strengthening again but I could be mistaken.

cozietoesie · 12/09/2018 21:21

I think they suspected an eye wall replacement some time today. She's becoming more organised, I think.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/09/2018 22:12

Shock at my autocorrect! Eyeball indeed!
Obviously eye wall.

cozietoesie · 12/09/2018 22:15

Thought it was your autocorrect. Smile

OlennasWimple · 12/09/2018 22:17

Issac is swirling around in our direction - I'm also looking at clear blue skies and not a single breath of wind right now....

bruffin · 12/09/2018 22:19

My friend has been evacuated from Nevis today because of Isaac.

cozietoesie · 12/09/2018 22:19

There was some concern, earlier, about Isaac.........

QueenCity · 12/09/2018 22:43

@cozietoesie Yes, we've got pets but are well stocked up on their food.

I think there have been a number of eyewall replacements over the last few days. The children are most disappointed that school is going to be open as normal tomorrow! Not expected to hit here until Saturday now.

cozietoesie · 12/09/2018 22:48

I was (if possible) more worried about stock, Queen. I recall that people's stock came under serious problems with floodwater in recent hurricanes and storms.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 12/09/2018 23:02

Think it’s gone down to a Cat 3 now, right?

QueenCity · 12/09/2018 23:28

Of course. I was thinking you were asking because during Harvey lots of people abandoned their pets because shelters wouldn't let them in. SadFlorence is going to be devastating for many thousands of people and a huge amount of livestock.

cozietoesie · 13/09/2018 00:05

Pets are certainly an issue, though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/09/2018 06:15

Down to a Cat 2 now. That doesn't really affect the flooding risk at all.

Womaningreen · 13/09/2018 10:19

I was wondering, with the downgrades etc, do some people feel they need not have evacuated?

or is the downgrade kind of minor?

QueenCity · 13/09/2018 12:11

There is still going to be a lot of flooding caused by the storm surge and the huge amounts of rainfall that are on the way. It is still essential that those on the coast in the affected areas evacuate.

GloriaSmud · 13/09/2018 14:11

I was looking at this website for Wilmington, North Carolina yesterday. Just from their website, you can see how flat it is and how the area could be affected by the storm surge.

glagdy · 13/09/2018 14:18

I have friends and friend's family refusing to move.

We won't get it that far up where I am and I would evacuate because of ds but it would break my heart to leave my chickens to take their chances and totally understand their refusal to leave. They have pigs, cows also etc. Sad

QueenCity · 13/09/2018 14:27

How worrying @glagdy. Where do your friends live?

Whatthefoxgoingon · 13/09/2018 16:24

My friends in n Carolina have evacuated already thank goodness. Stay safe glagdy!

Nosleeptill · 13/09/2018 16:30

I’m in coastal SC. Hardly anyone I know has evacuated this time, even people that live much closer to the beach than us. We’re all stocked up, just waiting now

Womaningreen · 13/09/2018 16:38

@Nosleeptill

That's interesting

I was thinking that if you don't have young DC then maybe it's better to stay and you don't have to wait three days to get home to repair any damage etc

Shelloily · 13/09/2018 17:06

@Nosleeptill Shock I'm shocked that people aren't evacuating. They're forecasting a record storm surge. I can understand how awful it must be to have to leave your home and not know what you will be going back to but I would just want to ensure we were all safe. I really hope it's not as bad as they are predicting. Will be thinking about you. Keep in touch.

GloriaSmud · 13/09/2018 17:39

There are a couple of webcams here. Looks like Florence is making her presence known on the first one.
