Will the heat end quickly?

Campaspe · 26/06/2015 20:33

I dislike the heat and see most of next week is forecast to be in the high 20s, and possibly higher. Really uncomfortable. Can anyone advise when the south west/Bristol area will feel more comfortable? Thanks.

I will be teaching classes of 32 teenage boys in this heat. I'm 28 weeks pregnant. It's not going to be pleasant. It's going to get very stinky, very quickly. The boys spend ages wondering when they'll be allowed to take their blazers off and then when it is summer uniform they sit and bake in them! Confused

Cheesymonster · 27/06/2015 11:39

I wish I could sit in front of a fan and chill. I work in a hot office with no AC and at home am running after a 2yo. My body doesn't seem to cope with the heat, I get sweaty and red faced and prickly heat and sun burnt.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/06/2015 11:40

Cheesy- quite, if only a fan would do the jobHmm

BabyGanoush · 27/06/2015 11:42

I used to live in proper humid tropical cimate, and Zi found the following useful:

Close curtains in south facing rooms to keep heat out.

Buy a fan, cheapo will do. Really helps.

Get a padling pool if you have the space, and use it yourself Grin

Wear light, natural fibre clothing

Run cold water over the inside of your arms for a few mins, this really cools you down all over.

Have lukewarm showers (notcold)

Take it slow, don't hurry, adopt a "mañana" attitude.

Drink plenty water

It's all stuff you probably know, but then I can be surprised at friends wearing skinnies and polyester tops who then moan about heat!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/06/2015 11:45

I used to live in a Mediterranean country, easy peasy in the heat compared to the UK ime.

BabyGanoush · 27/06/2015 11:48

Meditteranean heat is mostly dry heat though.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/06/2015 11:52

Yes exactly, lovely dry heat!

lavendersun · 27/06/2015 12:06

Baby - I have lived sub tropics too ... inside with the air con on mainly Grin.

My house is very old with 2ft thick walls, I get a lot of work done on hot days because my cold in the winter study is really really lovely.

BabyGanoush · 27/06/2015 13:27

Lavender, I was the sucker who rented an appt in Buenos Aires which had no airco.

In the hottest months it was 38 degrees every day, my children had permanently wet hair (sweat)? And I forked out for many fans!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/06/2015 13:57

i use weatherpro :) though its only based on one model, I have a good amount of confidence in the conpany behind the app.

I'm not so good at inferring humidity from weather models so I also use the met office website. For now readings in my location, its my own weather station.

GFS goes for one blast of silly heat mid week, then a bit of a cool down, another blast of perhaps even hotter Saturday, cool dwn Sunday, then a heat reload early in the week.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/06/2015 14:03

Its the almost instant switch on to high heat that will make people struggle. Its been relatively cool up to this point. Plus the having to carry on as normal. Our houses are not designed for heat, nor are our offices or schools. Its not unreasonable for people to struggle.

As long as I have lots of salt and gallons of water I'm far more comfortable in high temps than cold ones. Its just how I'm built. Others are different, but I think overall many british people fare best around 20-22c.

GoodtoBetter · 27/06/2015 14:10

High 20s isn't really very hot though, is it? I mean, come on!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/06/2015 14:27

We are looking at potentially 32-34C in some areas. That is a challenge to people who are not used to it.

Anyway, it seems mean to tell people on a thread where they get genuinely uncomfortable that they are being unreasonable. If they are uncomfortable then they are.

I can eat ridiculously hot chillis. Doesn't mean I castigate people who can't manage spicy peperoni. We are all different.

usualsuspect333 · 27/06/2015 14:30

Is all of July going to be hot? I hope so, I'm going camping on the 11th.

lavendersun · 27/06/2015 14:55

Not just people who aren't used to it ... Asthmatic in my case and I struggle to control it at times in the heat. Whilst I can chose not to ride my bike, ride my horse and walk the dog, I can't avoid it totally as I still have to look after everything.

I have been very productive today though, work wise and I have put up a white board, cork board, mirror, locks back on the bathroom doors (they came off about 18 months ago). So inside for a bit longer than usual isn't always bad!!

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 27/06/2015 15:03

I'm 39 weeks pregnant so the heat is going to be a struggle, but as PP's have said we get so little hot weather! You have your way most of the year! And don't forget so many of us are vitamin D deficient, we need some sun.
I used to live in Madrid and despite being 40 degrees plus it felt so much nicer than the UK due to the lack of humidity.

wanderings · 27/06/2015 15:12

Warm sun in England is to be treasured, not moaned about.

End of.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 27/06/2015 15:25

It's going to be beyond 'warm' though in many places, & will feel warmer than the thermometer says, so pushing 40 in the S. That's not welcome for a lot of people.

when the heat has been building for a few days it really helps to keep most windows closed during the day

Kitten, I'm delighted to see you use weatherpro - the builder put me on to it when he was doing our roof last October, it's really good Grin

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 27/06/2015 15:28

OP, this is weatherpro's summary for the week in Bristol. Tue & Wed are the hottest but still not anything like the SE (34-35 forecast for some places)

Will the heat end quickly?
digerd · 27/06/2015 16:56

SE.

We had 2 days of very humid/close and stifling air in which dog and I had difficulty moving and breathing.
Today was lovely fresh dry air but 2 degrees cooler at 26 atm.
The other sweltering days were 28 degrees with no air movement to speak of and made me clammy which I don't like.

TV weather forecast mentioned humid nights next week which are unpopular with most people. This may change, though.

Dog and I may have to give the 2pm walk a miss next week again.

I need it to rain in the night for the garden too.

30 degree plus heat is really hideous in greater London. The humidity and all the concrete is the killer (not to mention the tin can furnace that is the tube). Other parts of the country are more pleasant but it's horrible here. I disagree that we get 11 months of cold weather. It's rare to feel cold at any part of the year in the SE. Certainly it's warm into October and even November most years. I can't wait to retire to the north.

BabyGanoush · 27/06/2015 22:14

I love living in the South (BBC Solent's motto Grin)

You just have to go with the occasional heatwave.

Bunbaker · 27/06/2015 22:38

"I disagree that we get 11 months of cold weather"

Maybe that is only true of London. Most of us don't live in London and do get 11 months of crap weather.

OttiliaVonBCup · 27/06/2015 22:40

We haven't had much rain recently.
Any chances of that?

Peacheykeen · 27/06/2015 22:43

I hate the heat too it drains all my energy. Bring on the Autumn
