Hello! I'll be heading out northwards after bedtime.

PseudoBadger · 17/03/2015 14:59

Some magnetometers in the Arctic have reached kp9! This is amazing. That would bring London upwards in to play... Pray for clear skies!

PseudoBadger · 17/03/2015 15:34

Could, could, be right down to mainland Europe...

GloriaSmud · 17/03/2015 15:58

Bloody hell! Shock Oh my word ~ that must produce something for us!

Hints of green and pink in New Zealand!
(hope the picture works ~ haven't done one from there before)

Where abouts are you, Gloria?

Any chance on East Sussex coast??

PseudoBadger · 17/03/2015 16:02

Magi - find somewhere with little light pollution and a good view of the horizon to the north and see what you see. Hope it's not cloudy!

magimedi · 17/03/2015 16:02

Have just seen that MNHQ have (at last) given us a Star emoticon - mainly for Woolly Hugs, but maybe it's a wonderful omen for us Star gazers!

Isthiscorrect · 17/03/2015 16:05

So no chance in central London then :-(

FoxyVeganJane · 17/03/2015 16:08

West or east coast - doesn't look like its Britain though just the states? Or have I read this wrong?

GloriaSmud · 17/03/2015 16:10

I'm in Leicester magimedi but right on the edge of the city so can usually find somewhere dark-ish within a few minutes drive. As Pseudo says, you might have a chance of seeing something if it's away from light pollution.

One of my favourite websites www.softservenews.com/gps-aurora-borealis-forecast.html

magimedi · 17/03/2015 16:18

Am near to a couple of very dark spots here - Herstmonceux being the closest. Might just toddle over there later, if it's clear.

And having checked the observatory's website, I'm certainly going over there on Friday morning!

PseudoBadger · 17/03/2015 16:30

It's so cloudySad

fakenamefornow · 17/03/2015 16:31

What time will be best to watch? I'm in the SW.

PseudoBadger · 17/03/2015 16:31

Any time after dark

Catsrus · 17/03/2015 16:35

south coast here too - and I got the alert, I don't know why I subscribe - rubbing salt in the wound that I probably won't see it Sad

GloriaSmud · 17/03/2015 16:37

Definite hints of aurora showing in New Zealand.

The meteorologist here though doesn't think there's much of a chance of seeing anything in the UK, south of the line he's drawn Confused

Magi I may see you tonight and Friday morning as I am hoping to get over to the observatory as well, or thought I may just go up on beachy head tonight.

PseudoBadger · 17/03/2015 16:39

It's likely he's referring to aurora directly overhead Gloria.

PseudoBadger · 17/03/2015 16:39

Wow New Zealand

PseudoBadger · 17/03/2015 16:42

Ok that camera is at latitude 43 - same as Northern Spain!

PseudoBadger · 17/03/2015 16:44

Sorry and the point of that post is that the aurora is a mirror image at each pole

GloriaSmud · 17/03/2015 16:44

I hope that's what he means Pseudo
Some excellent pictures coming in on Spaceweather's Aurora Gallery.

And for aurora spotting from space, there's the livestream from the International Space Station (it can take a few seconds for the live stream to start and the signal can be iffy at times.)
