Is your child's school closed?

My daughter's comprehensive had announced before 7am that it was closed despite a very slight sprinkling on the ground overnight and nothing on the roads.

The local primary schools are open though which means I have to go into work later - what fun - luckily I can do it on foot. We now have a steady fall of snow in Gloucestershire.

Dc3's secondary just sent a text, closing at lunchtime.

TallyGrenshall · 18/01/2013 11:23

Hoping I get a refund for the fees because DS attends the nursery, so I pay for the extra afternoon sessions instead of a fee paying school iyswim

iseenodust · 18/01/2013 11:24

Not snowing here yet but loads of local primaries already saying will close at 1.30 or 2 today.

nipersvest · 18/01/2013 11:26

we've got snow still here from the other day, but at last the council have been out gritting absolutely everywhere, pavements too. snow was forecast last night from 3am, but none came. is now forecast to start here at about 1ish. schools all open.

Dededum · 18/01/2013 11:28

One didn't open, assuming there would be loads of snow and the other opened but primary has just closed. Guildford.

We got a text at 7:30 to say DS's school would close for the day, it had just started snowing and to be fair we have a good couple of inches and it doesn't look like it'll stop anytime soon. We're North Hants.

DeepRedBetty · 18/01/2013 11:39

By the time I got up to check school website at 6.45 both dds had found out by FB and were already co-ordinating a sledging trip Grin

One has just returned looking like a yeti. She'd come off the sledge straight into a drift. Every inch is wet, wellies stuffed with impacted snow, hoods full... now parked in front of telly in dressing gown with tomato soup and every stitch of clothing in tumble dryer.

Other dd and two dear little friends are still out there. Quite glad if they return one by one, there's only room to de-layer one at a time in the porch and I'm not having them in the house in that state.

DeepRedBetty · 18/01/2013 11:40

NE Wilts btw. Still coming down fast, about four inches in the undisturbed bit of the garden now.

Brideandgloom · 18/01/2013 11:41

dd's secondary emailed this morning to say closing at 2.15 but can collect earlier. The school is rural essex and at the top of a v steep hill. Lots of children travel 45mins to an hour to get in normally so makes sense. Only had light snow so far but expecting worsening weather from lunchtime.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 18/01/2013 11:43

I'm in London and DD's school closed at 9.30am (received text just as I got off the first of two buses I have to get to work...) They haven't closed because of treacherous conditions here - it's been snowing steadily since half 8, but it's not too bad - but because we have a lot of teachers who travel quite far, and who travel from outside of London. It's annoying but I understand why they've done it.

Me and DD are going out for lunch instead (might as well enjoy our day off without the DSs!)

Startail · 18/01/2013 11:44

Yes, thank goodness.

Lane passable, just, if no idiots, but still snowing.

I'd not have risked it except DD2 has had a week off last term and her attendance looks awful.

It won't by the end of the year, because this was very unusual.

EvilTwins · 18/01/2013 11:44

Had an email from my school at 6.30 to say we would be closed. Didn't hear from DTD's school until 7.45, but they're also closed. There would have been trouble if I'd been allowed to stay home when they had to go to school! We're Gloucestershire as well.

nowahousewife · 18/01/2013 11:57

Never heard of independent school's refunding fees if closed. If that was the case then surely they would not be able to pay the staff if they did not come in. Not sure that would go down well!

innoparticularorder · 18/01/2013 12:06

Received a txt from school at 7am stating school open, got kids ready & packed them off with DH who was muttering about how ridiculous it's open when majority of schools in area closed. He got there only to be told they had decided to close.

DizzyHoneyBee · 18/01/2013 12:36

Had to laugh at this, from a friend "School is staying open but the out of school ski club is cancelled due to the snow" Confused

hoodoo12345 · 18/01/2013 13:25

My DC's primary and secondary schools stayed open today, probably because the snow didn't start snowing until 9.45 this morning, it is still falling now though so it will be fun at hometime later....

Sparklingbrook · 18/01/2013 13:34

Both DSs schools are closed. Feel a bit sorry for DS1's headmaster. He opened this morning then had to close at 11am and the parents are complaining. One has said it was due to percentage attendance figures that they opened. Schools can't win can they?

FryOneFatManic · 18/01/2013 13:37

Neither school closed yet, but now it's snowing and settling, I guess I'll get calls from schools soon. Sadly DD will have to cadge a lift from someone, unless breakdown chap can work his magic quickly Grin DS is 1 min walk away so easier (apart from sliding on the ice...)

Leicestershire.

XBenedict · 18/01/2013 13:38

DCs school shut. Just as well as we couldn't get to it anyway. DH tried to go to work this morning but had to turn back as all roads out of our town were blocked/impassable. He has just got to work now!

LIZS · 18/01/2013 13:39

dc school closed at lunchtime. Never had a refund for bad weather closure but we did get an extra day once when the boiler broke down .

HeadFairy · 18/01/2013 13:45

Surrey/Sussex border badlands... ds's school closed at 12.30.. no nursery at all today. My mum is looking after them today and has two hyper excited snow monkeys on her hands.
