My daughter's comprehensive had announced before 7am that it was closed despite a very slight sprinkling on the ground overnight and nothing on the roads.

The local primary schools are open though which means I have to go into work later - what fun - luckily I can do it on foot. We now have a steady fall of snow in Gloucestershire.

Not even a glimpse of a flake in Glasgow. Dc very disappointed! Ds is off anyway with a migraine.

EllenJaneisstillnotmyname · 18/01/2013 09:12

Both secondary and primary closed, in Glos. My boys are with their dad today, though. Sad

5madthings · 18/01/2013 09:12

Norfolk here and schools closed. I get updates from.friends on fb, waves to merry and i look on the website they do for emergency school.closures.

The schools txt as well.

Merrylegs · 18/01/2013 09:14

Ha Norfolk cc have just apologised on Twitter for the multiple school closure text messages sent this am. They are recommending you unsubscribe from the service and they will try to refund everyone!

GrimmaTheNome · 18/01/2013 09:17

Nope - no snow in my part of Lancashire. I doubt we'll get enough for a snowball. DD will be gutted.

musicposy · 18/01/2013 09:17

Yes, DD1's college in East Hampshire is closed. We couldn't have got there anyway, we're 10 miles away along country roads that are difficult at the best of times.

t0lk13n · 18/01/2013 09:17

Most schools in South Wales are closed. It is pretty bad and really I dont think anyone in their right mind would begrudge staff and pupils a day off due to really bad conditions. I wont drive in - even though my school is closed - as I am not risking my life driving in treacherous conditions. Sorry. It may be inconvenient but safety for all must come first.

On another note.....my husband was glad he has a 4x4 as he managed to get to work in it. Grin

stealthsquiggle · 18/01/2013 09:22

HormonalHousewife - independent schools won't close cos then they have to refund fees. DD's teacher (who had walked in) was doing a masterful job of not saying they were closed, whilst making it clear that she didn't really want anyone to leave their pre-prep DC. Main school (Y4 and above) are there come what may, as a fair proportion of the staff live on site, and one of the staff told me she had been making beds this morning so that they could accommodate any day children who couldn't get home.

ShowOfHands · 18/01/2013 09:22

Oh dear Grin

DH is currently debating leaving work early and trying to work at a more local station (copper). He's about 20 minutes down the A47 and currently catching the X1 to work. Took over an hour this morning due to diversions and bits of the A47 being closed through accidents. A friend is trying to get from Lynn to Norwich and has been diverted via Fakenham. Fakenham is virtually impassable in places atm. It's chaos!

5madthings · 18/01/2013 09:25

My dp got stuck at work earlier this week. He got home about 1am this morning and thankfully now has a few days off work, the roads are not good.

Oblomov · 18/01/2013 09:31

North Surrey. School open. Small amount of snow.

HormonalHousewife · 18/01/2013 09:43

Erm. Independent schools can and do close.

and when they do close they do not refund fees.

and who would bother asking for 1 or 2 days ??

stealthsquiggle · 18/01/2013 09:48

If you work out what the fees are per day, quite a lot of people, IMHO.

HormonalHousewife · 18/01/2013 09:49

Nah. Dont believe you

mummytime · 18/01/2013 10:03

Both schools open, but snow still falling, Primary says we can collect DC if we want (but roads to school are treacherous so would have to go on foot). DH due to be discharged from hospital on cruches today, not sure what we will do. Oh and I need more milk.

ShowOfHands · 18/01/2013 10:03

It was dh's birthday on Tues and he left for work at 3am (needed to be in Norwich for 5am and it was icy). He got home at 10pm that night. He should have been home after lunch! I swear the A47 isn't a road. It's a training area for the rac, aa, police and the highways agency. Sometimes it's a carpark too.

5madthings · 18/01/2013 10:36

Its crazy isn't it show it took one if dp's work colleges six hours to get from honningham over to the other side of vnorwich!

meditrina · 18/01/2013 10:43

Both schools open (DCs sulking!)

The primary has however cancelled all after school activities (including the after school club) and asked for all children to be picked up no later than the end of the standard day. Parents who want to can pick up their children early (any time after the lunch break).

outtolunchagain · 18/01/2013 10:46

My dses school never closes its a point of principle, they also encourage the children to play in the snow a lot.The head supervises sledging on the sports field and there are usually snowman building comps etc.

They do however say that you should pick your children up when you think it is the right time,it is entirely the parents call. The Head did say to me today though that he would prefer the all went by the end of school, although he has provisions if anybody gets strandedGrin

I wonder if one reason why independents can often stay open is that they generally have a higher staff ratio so if one or two teachers can't get in they still meet legal guidelines etc and don't need to close. The ground staff were also all out early clearing and gritting all the paths ,no one seemed to be doing this at either of the local primaries so I can see why the Heads feel it is too dangerous.

BeckAndCall · 18/01/2013 10:51

Guildford independent here - closed at 10 and sent the girls home but staff staying on site until all girls can be collected.

Of course independent schools close - and don't offer a refund for a day! You're paying for an all round education, not hourly child care.

ByTheWay1 · 18/01/2013 10:51

Ours is doing a daft rolling close - R/Y1 now, Y2/3 later, rest at lunchtime!! Unless siblings of course...

onadifferentplanet · 18/01/2013 11:06

Ds 1 school is closed today (Norfolk Indie) but he has been sent a fair bit of work to do by email,he had a question which he sent to the subject teacher and it was answered almost immediately so dont think I would get anywhere asking for the days fees back !

Oblomov · 18/01/2013 11:07

Ours just text. Closing, asked for he the children to be collected at lunchtime.

Ishtar2410 · 18/01/2013 11:12

South Oxfordshire - primary school not closed yet, but I'm expecting a text/call at some point fairly soon. Hopefully before I leave in 10 minutes or so to collect DS from pre-school. Won't be too impressed if I have to turn around and go back out to collect DD (yr3 at the same school).

We've got a good couple of inches of snow here and it's showing no sign of stopping yet.

TallyGrenshall · 18/01/2013 11:21

I'm near Norwich as well and DS's school has been shut since Wednesday (secretly hoping I get DS's fees refunded for the 3 days he's missed). There are also no buses coming into the village either so OH has to walk 2 miles to the main road to try to catch one - the exercise will be good for him! Grin
