Some potential for some really good beefy thunderstorms to develop over the next few days. Most likely place today I think is through the Midlands, but dont rule them out else where.

thundering in east herts too :) just need some rain to with it please!

headfairy · 28/05/2012 16:39

amillionyears I used to work with someone who has been struck by lightning twice. He has the scars from the burns on his hands and feet to prove it. He's a golfer so maybe that had something to do with it, but he always used to joke about lightning never striking twice, except with him :o

whojamaflip · 28/05/2012 16:45

no thunderstorm here yet but seriously humid! Lots of lovely towering clouds building up on the horizon and the crows are circling like they are auditioning for a western! Starting to get a little bit breezy too so have despatched the dcs to fetch in the washing! (glos/oxon border)

amillionyears · 28/05/2012 16:49

Oh heck headfairy, that is lots worse.

The house I am talking about smelt really funny afterwards, firemen were called to deal with the situation, nobody hurt.

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 28/05/2012 17:03

amiilionyears, there are areas in the country where more storms hit. I think its down to the topology of the surrounding area for instance for convection to happen some sort of 'lift' is needed - hills can provide that lift or add extra to it. You also need some sort of instability - sea breezes, or breezes funnelled by river valleys etc can provide that. There are other influences too I'm sure.

We have one in Basildon right now - lots of rumbling thunder.

headfairy · 28/05/2012 17:05

blimey, it's super hilly where we live, so hilly we've got the olympic cycling here in July! I wonder if that means we're in for some bangs and flashes? My garden could certainly do with a downpour.

amillionyears he was hospitalised for many days both times, the second strike has left him diabetic. He's lucky to be alive, but a great story for the pub :o

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 28/05/2012 17:06

met office now show lightning on their obs map :)
here Looks like their warning areas was right!

headfairy as the clouds move downstream of the hills they continue to grow (unless for some reason they become capped, or start doing their thunder/rain bit) , so your area might be more of a storm hatcher rather than a storm enjoyer.

I'll keep my eye on Newport/Cwmbran.
Why do we get more storms at night than in the day? Confused

headfairy · 28/05/2012 17:12

ooh I like the idea we're some kind of nest for storms to brew in. I'm picturing the alien nest in the Aliens movie, lots of pod things with storms popping out fully formed :o

disclaimer: I don't have much work on at the moment and I have a very over active imagination!

JuliaScurr · 28/05/2012 17:19

headfairy · 28/05/2012 17:45

amillionyears · 28/05/2012 17:47

SecretSquirrel193 · 28/05/2012 17:51

We had a mahoosive storm here in the channel islands on sat night - loud enough to hear in a building that is fairly sound proof, torrential rain too

NickettyNacketty · 28/05/2012 17:51

West Kent here, can I have a storm please!

PersonalClown · 28/05/2012 17:51

Oh now that's just not fair!! you lot in East and North Herts have had storms and here in lovely sticky hot Mid herts have had SOD ALL!!

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 28/05/2012 18:00

amillionyears - aha! perhaps it is more vulnerable to being struck, being in such a prominent high position.

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 28/05/2012 18:15

It looked like it might develop into an interesting afternoon here, the clouds built up at 3ish, but nothing happened and it's cracking the flags here again.

Conflugenglugen · 28/05/2012 18:19

Big storm here right now. East of England.

QueenElizaBeatHer · 28/05/2012 18:20

Thunderstorm just ended in Southend-on-Sea. It was only 30minutes long though, so hoping for more!

Kveta · 28/05/2012 18:36
