in the UK!
I think long-term forecasts are possible, although not by the Met Office! Let's see if I'm right.

what's your track record like with forecasting?

PostBellumBugsy · 29/11/2011 15:24

Never done it before - but the forecaster I am using is good. Have been following for quite some time now & has got most of the big weather events well forecast.

You follow Piers Corbyn don't you.
Which part(s) of the UK do you think will get a 'bitterly cold and snowy December'? When will this all start?

PostBellumBugsy · 29/11/2011 15:42

Bitterly cold for North & Eastern coast by weekend, with snow coming in on Eastern side of UK.

Tortoise · 29/11/2011 15:45

It mustn't snow , I haven't bought a new sledge yet!

OhYouBadBadkitten · 29/11/2011 17:16

what temperature is bitterly cold and when/where is snow coming in eastern england?

PostBellumBugsy · 29/11/2011 17:24

Snow in Eastern England within first 5 days of Dec & bitterly cold from there on pretty much all the way through December in the east of England. Temps below zero & sometimes quite a bit below.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadkitten · 29/11/2011 17:25

Do you mean all down Eastern England?

strandednomore · 29/11/2011 17:28

I bought a sledge a few weeks ago. I can therefore accurately predict that it will not snow in the south west this winter.

mumblechum1 · 29/11/2011 17:29

What's your prediction OYBK (I love your name btw)

SantasStrapon · 29/11/2011 17:31

Ooh will the snow affect me? Lincolnshire coastal area.

PostBellumBugsy · 29/11/2011 17:33

Looks as though the weather will be coming in from the East, so yes. Scotland seems to be slightly differently effected, so I guess the further north you are the more or less likely you are to get the full effect of the system coming in from the East. Although to be honest, it looks like a fairly grim December wherever you are.

OP posts:
SantasStrapon · 29/11/2011 17:35

Brilliant! I love snow. Grin

Wiifitmama · 29/11/2011 17:39

Don't say that! I am flying out of Heathrow on the 11th of December and we must not have snow!

JaneBirkin · 29/11/2011 17:40

Hmmmm. I don't know what to do now. Kitten said (I think?) no snow is very likely this winter (well not darn ere) and I don't know who you are OP so it's difficult.

I want some snow though. It looked and felt like it would today (SE)

Hulababy · 29/11/2011 17:44

No snow allowed, about from a tiny bit over the Christmas holiday perhaps - but not enough to prevent car travel!

I see no appeal in snow, especiially after the last couple of years!

strandednomore · 29/11/2011 17:46

No-one can predict this far ahead for the whole winter. It might snow, it might not. Remember all the "barbecue summer" predictions?

PostBellumBugsy · 29/11/2011 17:49

There were no barbeque summer predictions from the forecaster that has made these winter predictions.
I'm not a scientist or a meteorologist. I am just a very ordinary mum, but I've been following WeatherAction for ages & there seems to be some degree of reliability to the predictions. So, I am putting it out there. I might as well. If I am wrong & it is wet & mild, no problem. If it is snowy & bastard cold, well then we were all forewarned.

rosieposey · 29/11/2011 17:51

I have been reading the met office forecast for the month ahead and hoping there would be a glimmer of hope for some snow from somewhere.

I have bought snow boots for everyone this year and sledges. I hope Mr Corbyn gets it right and we have a proper winter its been stupidly mild so far with only one frost here so far.

strandednomore · 29/11/2011 17:51

I am happy with December predictions, just not predictions for the whole of the winter. January, February, March and on - I remember plenty of times it has snowed at Easter - I'm just saying they are too far away to predict yet.

I will have a look at WeatherAction. I was a real weather geek when I lived in a hurricane zone...

OhYouBadBadkitten · 29/11/2011 17:52

I wouldnt dream of of attempting a forecast a month in advance Wink

chrimblycompo · 30/11/2011 17:22

'I don't know what to do now'

what do you mean?!? wait and see like the rest of us?

OhYouBadBadkitten · 30/11/2011 18:11

JB - I've not said that snows not likely cos i dont know that :) I've spent a little time in threads explaining some of the factors we would need to see a similar winter to last year. at the moment the weather pattern is very different from last year.

FWIW snow is fairly likely in the Pennines next week and Scottish ski resorts should be getting some much needed snow, but in general the weather still looks variable and it is the possibility of more potentially severe gales that we should be more concerned about.

I do know that Mr Crobyn is having to explain why the 'exceptionally cold' weather he forecasted for now hasnt arrived yet: here but I'll leave that to people to decide what they think about it.

BerthaTheBogBurglar · 30/11/2011 18:40

Best weather forecasting system I ever had was a freebie that the Met Office gave out one Christmas. I think it was them, anyway. It was a cardboard frame with a clear plastic middle, and instructions to stick the frame to your window. To forecast the weather, you had to look through the middle of the frame ...

I have snow tyres. It won't snow.

JaneBirkin · 30/11/2011 19:04

Oh gosh. Sorry. I seem to have landed everyone in a right muddle without ever intending it.

Hope I didn't offend.
