Will it be the first thunder of the year or some? Potential is there for SW. back later to look at more detail.

eh, what about all those mad thunder/graupel/weirdo stuff storms you were dishing out in January? Shock weren't they thundery?

0891 · 02/04/2011 19:29

we had a rumble of thunder in the SW this morning (unless it was DPs guts)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/04/2011 20:10

well yes, they were for some catinthehat. I cant remember the last time I heard thunder.
you are right 0891, there was a bit of activity early this am :)

ok. Quick look

well, it does look quite interesting for storm fans tomorrow early afternoon. Mostly for the Sw and the southern part of the midlands too. perhaps though some potential further east . Quite a bit of CAPE for this time of year (convective available potential energy, which basically tells you how much oomph is available) and a slightly negative lifted index. Could be good... or I could be wrong.....

(catinthehat - I think all the graupely/thundery stuff was in Dec?)

Do you include the new forest in sw? The forecasts have sun with rain Confused and I want to go walking for mothers day :) my plans don't include getting caught in a thunder storm!!

winterpetunia · 02/04/2011 20:36

Someone here (apologies, can't remember who!) recommended this site for seeing where storms/lightning strikes are. Could be needed if anything kicks off tomorrow!

catinthehat2 · 02/04/2011 20:38

ahem

catinthehat2 · 02/04/2011 20:39

How SOON you forget Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/04/2011 21:10

Seashell, I think I would include the New Forest as a possibility.
Catinthehat - that wasn't thundery was it?

isle of Wight site is pretty good. And you can get it to text you if there are storms about. Not tried it yet myself - think I'm going to though.

Bit of a fact for you. 2010 had one of the least number of thundery days recorded across the uk in recent years, with only 5 widespread days, the average (1946-1995) average is 15 days. We was robbed last year.

Shall wake and see what the day holds then :) I love thunderstorms, just not when I'm out in them Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/04/2011 22:09

:) if I get a chance then i'll post an update in the morning. We are also going out for a walk (with a picnic!!!)

catinthehat2 · 02/04/2011 22:17

Can't remember the last decent t storm here, much more than a year fora good long lasting crasher.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/04/2011 22:19

its sad isn't it. it is going to be ace when we get our first proper one Grin

Ok,
as I say, I'm no expert at thunderstorm forecasting, they are tricky and really anyway you can only talk about risk rather than 'will'.

It does still look interesting today - this afternoon showers will develop over much of the country, from the west moving east. on met office invent there seem to be two convective lines setting up from mid/late afternoon - one extending ne from south wales and one extending ne from the SW. No guarantee that these will be thundery but I think there is a pretty good potential and in any case the showers will become very 'beefy'.

I would def recommend that if you are out walking in southern Wales in the early afternoon and perhaps the Downs in the late afternoon that you take a camera with you. Even if thunder doesnt develop, the cloudscapes should be very photogenic.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/04/2011 10:09

Worth noting that other forecasters have the risk much further north!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/04/2011 10:22

I'm going to bump this a couple of times before we go out in case there are other walkers today.

DH claims to have heard some here in the NE at 5am yesterday
He says it seemed overhead
I think he dreamt it :o

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/04/2011 10:40

He could well be right Stealth - the radar yesterday morning suggested something a bit active at around that time.

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 03/04/2011 11:01

He was not right - he mentioned this just after I had been wingeing about having had to feed DD all night and not having a wink of sleep - so he said "did you hear the thunder at 5am?"
erm no Blush

Hail here at the moment, no thunder yet though.

winterpetunia · 03/04/2011 15:34

Nothing in the thunder/lightning department here in Leicester but it's looking very dark over North/North~West way.

GentleOtter · 03/04/2011 15:46

We have just had a heavy hail storm yet it is very sunny.

Narketta · 03/04/2011 15:50

Very black thundery looking sky here in the west mids but no rain yet!! Might get the washing in though.
