Any way up cup bad for your baby.......?

Hi all, been to mother and baby group today and was told by a local dental health promoter that the 'any way up cup' is very bad for baby. Apparantley it is difficult to suck from and so the (possibly) sugary drink sits on the teeth and gums for longer(similar to a bottle I suppose) and there are studies which are looking at possible speech problems. Sorry cant remember the brand name of the cup, but think everyone will know which one I mean. She also said the Government were looking at the problem too! Anyone else heard about this?

Have heard similar whispers before but it seems a bit heavy handed to involve Govt ! However I'm sceptical about attributing teeth and speech problems to that alone since I doubt many kids sit with one in their mouths for much of the time. The sugary drinks I'd agree with but that is not specific to this design. Mine have only ever had water from one and yes they do take some sucking.

Hi
The only beaker that is recommended by the dental association are the tommee tippee easiflow ones, the drink doesn't pass the front teeth and cause tooth decay like the anyway upcups, also alot easier to suck on.Ive just binned 15 anyway upcups used by my children and replced them with these as they do seem alot easier and more tooth friendly.
Hope that helps
Vicky

I've just stopped using our anywayup cups for milk. They're fine for water, though - DS1 (nearly 4) still has one in his bed at night, so he can have water whenever.

We never used them for juice, just water, milk and cold (herbal) tea.

The Tommee Tippee ones bug me, as the child has to bite down to get the liquid. I still breastfeed DS2, and I'd rather he didn't think biting was the way to get things working!

tassis · 12/08/2005 14:35

WOw vicky, you have 15 anyway cups!! We've now boght 4 tommee tippee ones, but we lost one and one's at my Mums's. I thought that was bad enough.

Ds tried an anyway up cup at toddlers and solemly pronouced it "far too tricky". You do need a very strong suck...

bambi06 · 12/08/2005 14:40

yes i`ve heard this too

Frizbe · 12/08/2005 14:42

I endedup biting dd's anyway up to get it to work! anyway we binned it and got a tommee tippee one, which works well with minimal gumming needed! (good job now she has all her teeth nearly!)

fastasleep · 12/08/2005 14:48

I like the toddler version of the anyway up cup... it has a spout rather than a thing with holes in iyswim... and it's quite long so goes past the teeth, the liquid comes spurting out of that one.. (It is the avent one you're complaining about right?!) if so, just buy the toddler one - sucking is barely required!

DS takes the lids off any cups that don't have screw tops, he think's it hilarious. So I'm stuck with avent ones!

Mummyvicky · 12/08/2005 14:52

yeah 15 we just kept on buying them because DS1 would lose one, and we'd find it a week later......I think I got a tad obsessed with buying it in every single colour !!

LIZS · 12/08/2005 14:56

No, its not the Avent Magic Cup but the AnywayUp cup like this . However I maintain that many spouted cups could equally cause tooth decay if juice or squash is used and the baby is allowed prolonged access to sipping on it.

OMG locket! I dont use an 'any way up cup' I use a nuby cup with a soft spout. I have been (well not for me personally!!)thinking of trying a different one as ds seems to have 'outgrown' it,when I heard about the a u c I wondered about views on mumsnet and which cups you all use!

I only give ds water and formula.

fast asleep-I think it was the fact of the anyway up cup having a long spout which was the problem-apparently this causes speech problems, quite how I dont know!

I found it difficult to get water out of the anyway up cup so I would never buy another one for dd. The avent magic cup packaging says it is approved by the british dental health foundation and they are very easy to get fluids out of (I always try them out myself...lol). Tommee Tippee Easiflow ones are good too - dd has a selection all of which she does well with. I dont think it is just the anyway up cup that is being looked at as most valved cups that you have to suck hard at can cause problems. Have you tried the doidy cup . It is an open cup so is a bit messier but dd loves hers (hot pink!)

Nbg · 13/08/2005 13:17

I've tried to drink from these Anyway up things and it's really hard.I also cut out the valve from it, much easier then.

I got a doidy for my dd and it's great.

hoxtonchick · 13/08/2005 13:19

mam cups are fab.

hoxtonchick · 13/08/2005 13:19

mam cups are fab.

Dophus · 13/08/2005 13:51

I also don't like TT as you have to bite on them and I am still bf.
I use Doidy cups (but you need to supervise)

mumfor1sttime · 16/08/2005 14:23

Love the look of the doidy cup, think I might try this! Have bought a 'steady cup' which is supposed to not tip over! Think ds is bit too young for this, but will try it.

Lucycat · 16/08/2005 14:27

Surely if they only drink water from one then it's not going to affect their teeth and how can it cause speech problems - unless it stays in their mouth ALL the time when they should be learning to talk?

mumfor1sttime · 16/08/2005 14:33

steady cup

oops

OP posts:
mumfor1sttime · 16/08/2005 14:38

I agree lucycat, I only give ds water. I think there are only major problems with prolonged use and sugary drinks. But I would have said a bottle was probably worse for this as the child chews on the teat and not sucking. (Having nasty visions of 3 year old with bottle hanging from mouth, filled with sugary drink 24/7 uugh!)

Anyway up cups are a nightmare to suck from (when new)

even i find it almost exhausting and need a 'drink' afterwards for all the effort!!!

however once they are old they get easier... buts its very hard to get them 'old' if yoy see what i mean...

the cup by tommee tippe (is it tommee tippee) is supposed to e better as the child has to 'bite' the spout to get the drink out... its always ont the shelf with the otehr kids cups in super markets etc
