Hi all, been to mother and baby group today and was told by a local dental health promoter that the 'any way up cup' is very bad for baby. Apparantley it is difficult to suck from and so the (possibly) sugary drink sits on the teeth and gums for longer(similar to a bottle I suppose) and there are studies which are looking at possible speech problems. Sorry cant remember the brand name of the cup, but think everyone will know which one I mean. She also said the Government were looking at the problem too! Anyone else heard about this?

my dd loves the avent magic cup, its a non spill cup so sucking needed but it is approved by the dental association, no mess!

I got an anywayup cup for my DS and after discovering how hard it was to get anything out of it, I just ignored the instructions saying not to insert anything into the spout and stuck a teaspoon handle into it several times. Worked a treat.......
He has only ever had water out of it though (My cousin lost ALL his baby teeth to decay after my Aunt gave him lots of Ribena.)

My dd has the Avent Magic Cup, but not sure if I'm crazy about it. It tried to drink from it and battled to get anything out. You really have to tip it so that it is touching your nose before anything comes out. Haven't tried anything else yet, although dd seems ok with it but she is only six months and doesn't need to get loads of liquid out - she just has a few sips.

Hello

My DD loves the Avent magic cup, she went straight onto it at 4.5 months and i've never looked back, she either has water or tiny bit of juice diluted by loads of water, which my HV thinks is great!

Oh dear. I use these cups for dd1's milk am and pm. She takes ages to drink her morning milk and so it gets carried around with her so I need something leakproof. She was b/f till 12 months and drank water from the Avent magic cups when we started weaning but I found these leaked round the handle and so didn't want to use them for milk. Other valve cups I don't think can be cleaned properly if milk is used, so what should I do? She is 2.5 so should I just give her a cup of milk and try to get her to drink it all at once? She sometimes takes her night milk to bed still....perhaps this should stop now too. What do you think? I agree they take alot of sucking but dd manages. She drinks water from an open cup during the day as I don't mind water spilling.

DS used a Tommee Tippee cup while he was still breastfed (from when he was about 8 months old for about 8 months) and he only bit me a couple of times and only when he was teething - he learnt both actions and since my boobs don't have green rubber nipples with flip lids, he soon worked it out

He only ever has water from a cup too - milk is from a sippy-type cup and only at bedtime, after which his teeth are cleaned. He never has juice, so no problems with it being on his teeth for long periods.
