High chairs, specifically the Stokke Tripp Trapp

zebedeethezebra · 01/06/2010 15:17

Thinking about what high chair to get. I know there is a review page, but many of the reviews are over a year old, so after reading them I'm none the wiser.

Can anyone recommend a good high chair?

I like the Stokke Tripp Trapp but concerned that there used to be a danger of the child tipping itself over backwards in one and there are a couple of 2 year old You Tube videos demonstrating this.

Does anyone know if this is still a problem, or has the design been changed to make this less likely? To be honest, I think a child could tip itself over backwards in any highchair if it was left in a position where it could push against a table ledge.

I can only speak from personal experience but I have been using mine for 3 years and have never had a problem like that and both of my dc's are/were big fidgety babies

sorky · 01/06/2010 15:22

We have 2 Tripp Trapp's. Have used for 4 children, never any tipping at all!

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 01/06/2010 15:24

We bought an Ikea Antilop for about £15, bargain and easy to clean. Now he is 22 months he actually has his own little table and chair which he prefers but is still happy to sit in Antilop if we are at an adult table. I think the Tripp Trapps look nice but are expensive.
Also Antilop VERY easy to dismantle and throw in back of car if going to grandparents, not sure how easy it is to transport Tripp Trapp.

CMOTdibbler · 01/06/2010 15:25

DS is 4, and we have had a TT since he was 6 months - we've never had a tipping incident at all.

But the budget option is an Ikea Antilop - we had one for visitors, and it was fabulous for the price

TulipsInTheSunshine · 01/06/2010 15:28

I bought one last december and with the baby seat they supply extra long gliders for the back legs to ensure that it can't be tipped over. ds2 just shoves himself away from the table when he's done and there's never even been a close call, it just slides back easily.

It's easily the best piece of baby equipment i've ever bought. We had one of those high chairs that turns into a table and chair for dd and ds1 and i've used plenty of other models at toddler groups, friends house and restaurants and the tripp trapp beats all of them hands down. ds2 loves sitting at the table with us and it makes meal times so much easier.

It's a nice looking piece of furniture too and doesn't take up much floor space, essential when you have a small dining rooom at the heart of the house like us... everyone who comes into the house has to walk past the highchair.

We've gotton tonnes of comments on it, all positive and ds2 loves it... the older two are demanding ones of their own too now!

We have a TT - I think I wrote one of the reviews on the products page for it. DS1 had it first 10 years ago and now DS2 is sitting pretty in it. I think it is a really good chair, never had any tipping issues but it is a bit of a pain to clean. Don't bother with the baby cushion set as it's very difficult to remove the cushions to clean them.

I also have a very cheap IKEA fold up high chair. I bought this for DS2 when he was weaning at 6months as to begin with he wasn't so comfy in the TT. Fantastic value and just as good as the TT really. It also goes up to the table and cost £30.00.

stealthsquiggle · 01/06/2010 15:41

We have two TTs. DC are now 7 and 3 and still use them. If you are keen on your LO sitting at the table with you then I think TT is the best option.

DD managed to tip the chair up, but never over and she soon grew out of it (and it sounds like they have fixed the problem with long gliders in the baby kit).

I would agree with not bothering with the cushion, although I "adapted" ours to make it a lot easier to remove for washing, we never used it for DD (DC #2).

No experience of the other options, but I would definitely recommend TTs.

Harimo · 01/06/2010 15:48

I have a 2 year old who is practiced in the art of tipping himself over in highchairs - and he's never managed it in our TT.

I would recommend them... Easy to clean, can sit at the table.

agree... dont bother with the cushion.

MrsJohnDeere · 01/06/2010 15:54

We have a TT (no longer used). Tipping over was a problem but it is the only highchair we've used for any length of time so I don't know if it would be a problem with other types too.

Looks nice and takes up little floor space but I found it a total PITA to clean (particularly all the ridges down the sides). With the benefit of hindsight I'd have bought a cheap as chips plastic one instead.

flowerybeanbag · 01/06/2010 16:01

DS1 used to manage to tip it up a bit, but certainly never far enough to actually go over, and only when we were silly enough to put him so he could reach the table with his feet and had the back edge of the chair in a groove in the kitchen floor. With the chair on a flat tiled surface all it's going to do is slide backwards anyway.

DS1 is now using it, and much prefers sitting at the table with us to being in a different highchair with a tray or whatever.

DastardlyandSmugly · 01/06/2010 16:16

I have 2, DS 4 and DD 21m use them, and we've never had a tipping problem. They are great.

silverdogflower · 01/06/2010 16:27

We've got the cheapo version of a trip-trap which is made by 'red kite'. Has never tipped up and we still use it (DC now 3+ years old). Is easy to clean and adjust height etc. Don't bother with cushion - just gets mucky. Highly recommend.

silverdogflower · 01/06/2010 16:29

Or try the Hauch Alpha - that's cheaper than a TT and is also good.

musicmaiden · 02/06/2010 23:18

Cheap and just as good as is the BabyDan chair...

jennifersofia · 02/06/2010 23:26

Ours is almost 10 yrs old, on third child, still looks great. I find it very easy to clean (didn't get cushions). Never had a tipping problem. Reason we got it is because it is in our living room and we have to look at it all the time, can't store it away 'cos no space, and we thought it was the nicest looking one.
Baby bit can be a little awkward to get baby in, but there is a knack to it that you soon get the hang of.
Another (cheaper) possibility is getting the Ikea Antioch as suggested, and then the HandySitt for when child is older (as the Handysitt can be folded away).

Habbibu · 02/06/2010 23:34

Agree with the Antilop/Handysitt combo - that's what we've got, and it's fab. plus the handysitt is great for travel.

LoveTheCarbs · 03/06/2010 20:47

We have also got the TT. Love it. My DS is 13 months old and also very active but the chair just slides back when he pushes himself away from the table and we have never had any tipping issues. He really enjoys sitting at the table eating with us and I think it's easier that way for us. It can be a bit difficult to clean but it has so many other plus points that I think they completely outweigh it. It'll definitely be a TT for No.2 when they come along!

My mum and dad have an Antilop for when we go to their house and it is very handy especially for the price.

Snowfalls108 · 03/06/2010 21:34

We have TT, and love it. Looks brilliant, and DS is very happy in it. I would agree don't bother with the cushions - too tricky to clean!

Elvisina · 03/06/2010 21:39

Great thread for me as I've just ordered my first TT today so thanks! Might see if I can get a refund on the cushion now.

mcflumpy · 04/06/2010 05:42

We have TT and love it. Cushions are a waste of money IMO but we invested in a play tray which has been excellent. Tipping unlikely with the gliders added.

That said we use the Antilop at my mums and it's sooo much easier to clean although LO does end up with more food on her lap than she does in the TT

powerkitty · 05/06/2010 12:40

You are absolutely right - any highchair could tip if the child is goaded into tipping it as the baby is in the video that you mentioned.
I have four children, they all have a Tripp Trapp, they have been using them for 9 years and we have never had one tip over.

chaya5738 · 05/06/2010 12:51

Can't speak highly enough of the Ikea antilop. It is brilliant and so easy to clean.

MrsPurr · 14/06/2010 11:30

The Tripp Trapp won't tip if you buy the baby set it includes long 'glider' things like long strips of plastic -- to put on the feet at the back that make it impossible to tip. Believe me, DS does hs best!

Carameli · 14/06/2010 13:01

I also have the Tripp Trapp(2 of them, 1 currently has the baby set on and the other just a normal chair) no.3 is in the baby seat and its fab. I have been using them for 7 years now and never once tipped over. My two sons especially love trying to push themselves back from the table with their feet and it has all been fine. Also caught ds1(now 3yrs) standing up onto the other one to get to a cupboard and still it held firm, cannot say the same for my nerves though

smokeybacon · 14/06/2010 13:12

Yep, another vote for the TT here. DS1 used it till he was 3 and coz we were cheapskates when DS2 came along, he has it now. Never had a tipping problem with either. DS2 is now 13 months old. I did have to invest in the straps for him recently as he was climbing out and onto the table, something DS1 never did, but now he sits happily with them on, and lifts his arms when he is ready to come out.

We also invested in the table top plastic tray (not the one that attaches to the chair - this one suckers to the main table in front of him). Expensive for a piece of plastic, but actually its in use 3 times a day and invaluable for us as DS2 was BLW and protected our lovely oak kitchen table.
