I have a 20 week old and am planning on starting BLW around the end of May ish. Have been reading the Gill Rapley Book but would be great to get some ideas from others and share a few experiences. We will probably start in the next 4-6 weeks. Is there anyone else around starting at the same time that wants to join me on this thread ?

Morning everyone! I'm just like Janey and pickles with the nappy examination...nothing yet though.

We had broccoli for breakfast and he gagged a bit but kept going back to it, so we shall see if any went in.

DS gets squirmy after being in the highchair for more than 15mins or so - I get him straight out as I want it to be fun, not a chore. Is anyone else finding this?

sungirltan · 20/04/2010 09:12

morning all. dd was actually swallowing bits of banana this morning. dh v excited! hoping it doesn't go striaght through and make an appearance at baby music class this morning!

popspig · 20/04/2010 13:14

It's reassuring that others are having similar experiences. We're still just playing and tried a banana this lunch. DD thought it was great at first and was shoving it into her mouth but any that was in danger of being swallowed was spat out with a look of disgust - very funny - she also used to do this with formula!

mistressploppy · 20/04/2010 15:03

Just been to hv and ds has put on very little (he's gone from 75th to almost 9th in the last 3m) so we are going to be spooning some cereal as well as playing with whatever we can find - I mean; doing blw!

I hope I can still come and play on this thread though

sungirltan · 20/04/2010 17:00

afternoon - brocoli/cauli went down a treat but i steamed it so much it was mush - obv it doesnt take 40 mins to steam 4 florets duh!

another heinous nappy just now with carrot in it - euw! (but yay in a different sense)

FluffyFrog · 20/04/2010 17:06

Quick Post - found baby stock cubes in Boots today on offer at 2 for £2. Beef / Chicken or Veg.

Will catch up later.

baby stock cubes - thats interesting, because oxo have msg in them !

picklesrule · 20/04/2010 19:45

evening! We tried eggy bread this morning - totally disinterested but the dogs LOVED it! They now move into position one on either side of the highchair every time I put DD in it just waiting for her to chuck it all too them

Brocolli and asparagus with cream cheese was more successful for lunch though. Tried some spinach with it too but seemed unimpresseed by that!

Off to make some of that spinach & lentil dip stuff now as I think I should deviate from huumus a bit!

FluffyFrog · 20/04/2010 23:40

Ruby - the Boots ingredients look pretty good. Can't see anything looking like MSG. They claim to be to artificials & controlled salt.

Loving hearing everyones stories. at Brocoli for breakfast - mind you there is probably a special K variety with some in they seem to have everything else.

Mistressploppy - I hope you keep playing on this thread it will be really good to hear from someone who tries a bit of both methods.

After basically turning his nose up at my fish cakes, DS wolfed two fingers of plain haddock, making mmm mmm noises as he did so. Clearly I am getting carried away with toddler type recipes! Simple white fish he can deal with, fancy fish cakes, not yet thanks!

Also had eggy bread this morning. Wouldn't eat it off high chair, but sat on my knee he stuffed some in .

RubyBuckleberry · 21/04/2010 08:36

Thanks Fluffy, will check those out .

mistressploppy · 21/04/2010 08:49

Actually have just looked at the Red Book and the HV didn't adjust ds's weight for his being prem, so he's not that bad after all - I'm not going to panic.

He shared my mini shredded wheat with blueberries this morning, getting better at holding stuff. He really likes being spoon fed though, even after only doing it twice, so I'm going to make sure that most of the food is blw, so we don't end up spooning entirely

Fluffy - at Special K with broccoli!

Ruby - fish, good idea - might try some salmon tonight

mistressploppy · 21/04/2010 08:51

Just thought, given the stage we're all at with our lo's - does that make us 'weaners'/'wieners'? !

picklesrule · 21/04/2010 10:13

rubybuckleberry - how did you cook the haddock? Wanting to try some fish with DD but can't think how best to prepare so it doesn't all just fall apart as soon as she touches it...

RubyBuckleberry · 21/04/2010 10:36

its the frozen stuff - a bag of 6 fillets or whatever. and i microwaved it according tote instructions on the bag. four minutes or something. it was much firmer than the other white fish and it split lengthways into fingers that he could hold.

on a different note, ds hasn't put on any weight in the last 3/4 weeks . he has always been around his line - he's gone above and below but he's never actually not put on anything! anyone have any experience of this? hv not that bothered - says it is common in early stages of weaning...

RubyBuckleberry · 21/04/2010 10:38

i also put some with philly on a rice cake - for me to eat with him - and he couldn't take his eyes off it and was doing the funny baby bird face at it so i gave him half and most of that went down too .

crikeybadger · 21/04/2010 13:40

Hey, just back from the weigh in and he's gained 21 oz in 3 weeks! Weeehhheee!!

The HV, said "ah yes, you've started him on solids haven't you" I nodded sweetly and just omitted that I'd been doing blw as she wasn't keen on it before. (just for background he was admitted to hospital back in jan - failure to thrive and still has to actually get back on any line )

So it just shows that something is getting in (although the little monkey is still feeding alot in the night so that could have something to do with it !).

Thanks for the tip on the fish rubybuckleberry, I tried fishcakes too but they just got squished up.

JaneyTroll · 21/04/2010 15:59

Haha about the dogs and the eggy bread, Picklesrule! Bet they're thrilled about BLW!

DS bestowed a small supplementary poo on me on Tuesday morning, and lo! A few tiny bits of broccoli!!! More thrilled than words can say. That it should come to this... Sigh.

Banana and courgette have proved popular, then I nearly set light to the microwave while doing two small bits of sweet potato. Note to self: 3 minutes is way too long unless you want the plastic pot they're in to catch fire. Sigh. Again.

RubyBuckleberry · 21/04/2010 18:48

crikeybadger 21oz thats brilliant! you must be relieved!

did meatballs this evening cos i am thinking he needs iron and they went down very well. he sampled two and by what was left on floor/chair i think he actually ate what amounts to a whole one. he got quite frustrated with it all in his mouth so i encouraged him to have some water and he washed the mince down with it woohoo feels like a blw success! very encouraging!

janeytroll - haha 3 minutes for two small bits of sweet potato lol

picklesrule · 21/04/2010 20:25

thanks rb will give that a try!

Dogs are indeed thrilled janeytroll although as one is already on the portly side i'm not sure it is going to do them any favours!
I was thinking the same thing today when examining a nappy - who would have thought this would be the source of excitement in my life

Meatballs sounds like a good idea too...was just about to make some bolognese sauce but maybe I will try that instead..

Made her a lentil & spinach dip thing today...didn't smell overly appetising but she actually seemed to quite like it so that was good...

crikeybadger · 21/04/2010 21:01

thanks rb, yes we couldn't really afford for any more weight loss! I'll have to keep up with the full fat yoghurt, sticks of cheese and avocado slathered on rice cakes! (and then get that paediatrician off my back!)

Sounds like the meatballs were a hit! Am going to give chicken and apple sausages a go tomorrow [hmmm]. Roasted veg still going down nicely and broccoli that was previously thrown had a bit of a suck today.

snugglejunkie · 21/04/2010 21:50

Excellent crikeybadger - sending a big 'yay' and 'phew' in your direction.

Considering we're not officially starting for another couple of wks I went for it a bit today. He does increasingly seem ready tho!

Lunch: avocado & cucumber. Avocado a bit on the hard side, but gave it a good suck. Cucumber down to the skin!

Tea: roast courgette & roast parsnip. Oh my god he totally went for it!!! I overcooked the courgette a bit, but he chased the lumpy-gooey bits around the tray with a very determined-concentrating face followed by rampant finger sucking
Also the parsnip was quickly stuffed in his mouth, then he carried on chasing the courgette round the tray with parsnip hanging out his mouth

This is fun!!

mistressploppy · 22/04/2010 08:48

Snugglejunkie, your lo sounds totally ready (much better than mine ) - I'd go for it if I were you, maybe avoid wheat/egg etc for a bit

RubyBuckleberry · 22/04/2010 09:49

"I overcooked the courgette a bit, but he chased the lumpy-gooey bits around the tray with a very determined-concentrating face followed by rampant finger sucking "

Haha love it!

mistressploppy · 22/04/2010 12:23

DS had a strip of fillet steak today and LOVED it, I couldn't get it off him.

Oh dear, what possessed me?
