I have a 20 week old and am planning on starting BLW around the end of May ish. Have been reading the Gill Rapley Book but would be great to get some ideas from others and share a few experiences. We will probably start in the next 4-6 weeks. Is there anyone else around starting at the same time that wants to join me on this thread ?

Hi all

Joymaker - don't worry about baby rice and purees. Just get started on solids! At this age the point is introducing taste and textures rather than getting them to eat. They may play with their food for ages before any gets to their mouth. We started with sticks of steamed carrot and cucumber. Sticks of fruit of any kind were also a roaring success (I microwaved apple until soft). Having said that we offered toast on day 2 and DS tried it and loved it.

You need a highchair - get one you can wash easily. Ikea antilop is great. Some kind of splashmat is good. Some use old sheets or tableclothes, I have a large plastic sheet which I just wipe down (bought from a shop that sells materials). Couple of bibs.

Don't have any regrets or wish I'd done it differently Grin. Really enjoying it. Gill Rapley's book on Baby Led Weaning is also worth reading as contains lots if ideas

Scooter - am sure they are some savoury muffins recipes somewhere back in this thread. Or various recipes on www.babyledweaning.com

fang - no suggestions I'm afraid. Have you posted on breast and bottle feeding thread as they might have some ideas.

Hi all,

we are in our 3rd full week of BLW and seems to be going well... At the moment I am offering breakfast and lunch, but haven't bothered with dinner as we normally eat late and bubs is in bed. Getting over my fear of her gagging/choking, especially after she scoffed chicken/roast beef, but I'm not sure how much food to offer her?

For breakfast today, she had half an oatibix with breast milk, a whole kiwi, and half a plum. I am learning not to rush and clear things away as she likes to take her time and go back to things, but this seems a lot and now she is hiccuping away on her playmat, and seems in a bit of discomfort??

any thoughts??

Hello,
I hope that everyone is doing well with their BLW. I'm afraid after a really fun start, with a slightly shotgun approach (offer baby absolutely anything going) I have completely lost confidence :( We went abroad with my parents for a week and the baby started projectile vomiting and having bad nappies, so we stopped for a few days to let her settle and she was fine. Since then we've been staying with friends (plumber trashing our flat!) and both times I've tried to introduce solids she's been really sick (like 5 times, down to the bile, sorry tmi). The only thing I can think is that she might be allergic to something in white bread (she'd only had wholemeal before) or it's all complete coincidence and it's actually to do with a cold?
I feel awful now as she's 6 months plus 3 weeks and just having milk. Boy is she breastfeeding a lot! I just can't face her being really sick again, I know it's pathetic but with not having been in our flat for a month I feel a bit overwhelmed. Any ideas for very simple things to get started again? Should I just try some carrots and apple? She had so many things happily before, but I've lost my confidence.
Hope you all have a good day.

I came back to find the blw thread Grin...

ds 15months now and is a complete star in the eating department. loves all sorts of foods/flavours, there are no food battles, meal times are really enjoyable... its all good.

still loving the haddock fingers from frozen fish - really nice with dill sprinkled on and olive oil.

loves all sorts of pasta bake type dishes

ricecakes with almond butter are a big hit at the moment - the almond butter has loads of vitamin e and calcium i think.

LOVED christmas, with all the different foods, loves sandwiches with chopped up baby spinach, cheese scones with chopped up whatever - sprouts even! - these are good with houmous too...

a whole tomato, cold from the fridge is good to sink teething gums into too lol

pudgemagoricus - it is fine for your 6.5 month old to be having just milk - mine sucked it and chucked it for ages - it wasn't until ten/eleven months he really got the whole thing and started to reeeallly enjoy food.

RubyBuckleberry · 13/01/2011 23:37

haha scarlett just go with her - a few hiccups and discomfort will tell her to eat less next time lol she is learning all the time... haha a whole kiwi is probably quite a lot but it won't do her any harm Smile

RubyBuckleberry · 13/01/2011 23:40

haha i've just realised the last post was november so totally irrelevant Blush

FMCOH · 14/01/2011 09:19

yes please - little one 21 weeks today and we have been feeding since week 20. Still only baby rice and purees but slowly but surely we will get there. Also trying to introduce formula which I fear is going to be a much bigger challenge!!!

I see this thread has been bumped by a silly person? But nice to see it anyway - I was the first poster after the OP and now I'm back with my second DS who is now 6mo! How time flies!
