Fellow weaners,

Hope you find this, our second thread. Haven't we been chatty! The title was borrowed from the kind words with which I was welcomed onto the thread by KiwiPanda. Hope you like...

On the topic of highchairs, I also have the ubiquitous Antilop from I**A, against my better judgement, damn them. It is awfully practical, even I will admit. Just shove a folded towel under her bum before feeds, saves on cushion washing

Felt brave today and administered both avocado AND blueberry muffins in the same meal. It was worth the mess to see her grinning little face at the end.

Hi Dawn

IsItMe eek that doesn't sound good Does BabyMe have any symptoms yet? If not maybe all the bf will help her immunity? [DrCosy clutches at straws ...]

DrCosyTiger · 29/10/2009 21:57

Or even his immunity! Sorry didn't mean to give your DS a sex change there ...

scotlass · 29/10/2009 22:53

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

Well purist I am not, DS has had two jars of mush today cos we've been out and about today and I can't figure out how to BLW in restaurants yet, he did have toast for breakfast (turned his nose up at strawberry cereal), sucked on a chip at lunch and pizza at evening meal. (it's my birthday so had lunch out and friends over for pizza this evening - we do normally eat more sensibly honest

Thing is he definately seems keen on dry things but as soon as I put a bit of slimy fruit in front of him he is really not keen. i tried a whole pear, a bit of pear and DH and I looked like a right pair trying to show him how nice a pear could taste. DS made this face
Any suggestions??????

isitmeor hope you aren't arm deep in vomit!

cara no great pumpkin plan apart from dressing DS as one. I love the lanterns though and always aspire to make pumpkin soup or pumpkin pie a la delia.

greensnail I take my hat off to you at the nudist meal times. I will stay fully clothed, don't want to put DS off his dinner!

So more questions - for breakfast is normal porridge or ready brek OK?

And sauces for pasta / shepherds pie do they hhave to be made from scratch or is any shop bought packet ones suitable. Oh dear can you tell I'm crap in the kitchen

dawntigga · 30/10/2009 07:20

cara we bought a pumpkin - but it's a mini munchkin one as it's all we can cope with

LookingForwardToSamhainTiggaxx

IsItMeOr · 30/10/2009 07:41

Thanks for the sympathy everybody. He just had a vomiting spell yesterday morning, then was a bit tired but okayish for the rest of day and last night. Just the others seemed to have an initial spell of vomiting, followed by a day or so lull, then followed by it "coming out both ends" to quote a friend. So we're in the wait and see phase.

scotlass I share your anguish, as it was packet sauces all the way here too (if not ready meals ). I'm not aware of any suitable pasta sauces myself, but I can let you have my pretty simple recipes for bolognese and shepherd's pie if you would like?

Sospan · 30/10/2009 09:16

We've been given a huuuuge pumpkin, it's about the same weight as 9 month DS. Will have to dust off my machete to tackle it.

Scotlass - normal porridge is fine and I think ready brek is too - you just need to check the salt content.

IsItMeOr - poor you and DS. Hope it's just confined to the one end.

We have borrowed my parents' bread making machine to see whether it's worth getting one. Was quite excited when it arrived on Wednesday, but now it's just looming at me from the kitchen work top and making me feel like I should Do Something With It.

greensnail · 30/10/2009 09:29

oooh Sospan, get on and make some bread - its so fab! We're avid breadmakers here - what machine is it? We have Panasonic one which came very highly recommended and we love it. Means I can really relax about how much bread DD has as we only put half a teaspoon of salt in a huge loaf.

We sometimes use normal pasta sauces. I check the labels and buy the lowest salt one. If you work out how much of the sauce the baby is actually getting it usually works out ok. You can also get baby sauces in the baby food aisle - the Peter Rabbit jars of sauce like this are ok.

greensnail · 30/10/2009 09:31

oh and well done Hulla at being so chilled. It seems to be working quite well here. My parents are visiting and brought home made sponge cake and apple pie with them. DD rejected the cake in favour of her rice cake and devoured the apple from the pie but ignored the pastry

IsItMeOr · 30/10/2009 10:11

Thanks for those tips greensnail. Please can you let me know the make of your bread machine as I'm contemplating asking for one for Christmas (although DH loves bread, so may just buy him one instead if he can't think of anything . I can always think of something I want need).

I had my eye on this one as DH particularly likes bread with bits in. Not raisins though.

DrCosyTiger · 30/10/2009 12:37

IsItMe - we have our fingers crossed and tiger tails tied in a lucky knot the worst is over too.

Scotlass - I give DD normal porridge and sometimes use the "oat so simple" sachets as I'm a bit clueless about the right quantities when making porridge from the big bag of oats (DH is better at this as he's a proper Scottish person) I've also used shop bought pasta sauce (buying lowest salt brand) but often I just roast some tomatoes and garlic and use that as a sauce, with a bit of grated cheese on top. Just cut up fresh tomatoes, add a bit of chopped garlic and roast in oven for 20 mins or so. Can add herbs but I usually forget.

DrCosyTiger · 30/10/2009 13:01

Oh and olive oil in with the fresh tomatoes and garlic before roasting in oven. Or they'll burn. Sorry. Brain full of mushy porridge.

greensnail · 30/10/2009 15:04

IsItMeOr I have the Panasonic253 breadmaker. I think the one you have linked to is a more modern version of mine - we've had ours about 3 or 4 years I think and its still going strong. That one definitely looks like a good buy to me, definitely get it for DH!

Hulla · 30/10/2009 16:35

I have that breadmaker IsItMeOr - highly recommend it. I use it to make fruit bread - dd & dh could live off fruit toast & like snail I reduce the salt.

I have a question - when can I consider dd weaned? When does it stop being BLW and become just eating dinner?

I feel like we're done...

cara2244 · 30/10/2009 16:42

isitmeor I have a Panasonic bread maker too and it's fab. I am pretty hopeless at baking, but it is really easy. I put a loaf on last thing at night and use the timer so it's ready in the morning. I am now quite snooty about bread and don't like shop bought stuff any more...tastes gluey compared to homemade.

cara2244 · 30/10/2009 16:45

Scotlass I use ordinary porridge oats, 25g of oats to 150ml milk, in the microwave on low watt setting for about 5 mins. I add dried fruit or mashed banana or grated apple towards the end of the cooking time. Doesn't need any sugar or salt. Virtuous and BB loves it.
The Waitrose essentials one is my favourite at the moment as it has a soft texture like Ready Brek.

cara2244 · 30/10/2009 16:46

Hulla I reckon it's when you no longer find bits of lentil down your bra....

Hulla · 30/10/2009 16:52

Oh, perhaps not then

IsItMeOr · 30/10/2009 18:25

Hahaha at lentils down your bra.

But seriously am I doing something wrong if I've not given DS lentils yet? It's not something we've ever really eaten you see. Are they really important for growing babies?

Sospan · 30/10/2009 18:42

IsItMeOr - what?? no lentils?? your poor DC...

Don't worry, we haven't either, although I am going to try that lentil recipe posted on here. I've bought the lentils and everything .

missorinoco · 30/10/2009 19:37

IsItMeOr - I googled the housecoat - gulp!
Think I may need to get some blinds for the kitchen and consider greensnail's suggestion......

dawntigga · 30/10/2009 20:35

I know it's me but I'm getting quite nervous that ds hasn't rejected any food yet.

WillWorryAboutAnythingTiggaxx

cara2244 · 30/10/2009 20:50

isitmeor God no! I only make one lentil dish, dhal, and that's only because I'm veggie.

cara2244 · 30/10/2009 20:51

Dawntigga lucky you! BB had great fun today throwing his dinner on the floor, bit by bit. He likes to watch where it lands.

IsItMeOr · 30/10/2009 21:51

Glad to hear I'm in the clear on lentils.

IsItMeBaby seems to be okay - a couple of small sicky incidents today, but not so I'd have noticed if it hadn't been for his little friends being so poorly. Am hoping it is the BFing helping (or that he never had anything in the first place). But have just been feeding him really dull stuff today. If all is well in the morning, we're off to show granny and grandad our new eating skills

Now, back to those overalls. No joy on a picture yet, but google did find this gem, where apparently the House of Commons had nothing better to do than debate the price of women's overalls in 1951.

Hulla · 31/10/2009 08:53

Lol "the prayers of the wicked will be as nothing".

All this lentil chat has me craving dhal at 8.30am on a Saturday. I'm sure thats very wrong. My DH baulks a bit at lentils but I am working on him. I could happily be a veggie (though perhaps tempted by KFC every now and then) but dh would sob.

IsItMeOr I hope today goes well for you. When we go home my family love watching dd eat. They think its hilarious. Everytime I post a new pic on FB (and I have posted quite a few ) I get lots of family comments.

Dawntigga - thats fab. Try cooking something especially for TiggaBaby, take about 2 hours to prepare and cook it. I bet that gets flung over the side of the high chair! I get really disappointed if DD hates a food I love.
