Fellow weaners,

Hope you find this, our second thread. Haven't we been chatty! The title was borrowed from the kind words with which I was welcomed onto the thread by KiwiPanda. Hope you like...

On the topic of highchairs, I also have the ubiquitous Antilop from I**A, against my better judgement, damn them. It is awfully practical, even I will admit. Just shove a folded towel under her bum before feeds, saves on cushion washing

Felt brave today and administered both avocado AND blueberry muffins in the same meal. It was worth the mess to see her grinning little face at the end.

We're not officially 6 months until Wednesday but figure a day or two early can't hurt. Plus with the snow there is bugger all else to do. So....

Lunch today: apparently one small girl can have quite a lot of fun with half a fish finger! Cheese on toast was quite a hit as well.
Pumpkin and dal soup on the stove now, should be ready for tea along with a bit of toast or maybe some chicken.

Would be grateful for any cleaning up tips anyone may have though

Am leaving the turmeric out of the soup recipe - my stain removing skills aren't that good yet

Hello
Yesterday we went for lunch at a Japanese restaurant in town as a treat (they do a brilliant bargain-ous set lunch). Teriyaki steak went down a storm - the piece off DP's plate was sucked, and sucked and sucked until it went positively grey!! Then she was content to be chopstick-fed some rice (sadly not sticky enough to allow self-feeding - well not in a restaurant anyway). She also liked the salmon from my plate so all in all, lunch was a bit of a hit, if perhaps a little heavy on soy.
These Delia maple roasted parsnips she loves, and I read up to find maple syrup is a good source of potassium, calcium, iron and thiamin, which is good to know. Sweet potato she really wasn't struck on, which is a shame - I was sure she would love it. I'll offer it again in another guise I think.
On the rice cake front, I discovered Kallo do big unsalted rice cakes which work out cheaper than the dinky baby ones and of course can be broken up. Also I checked and mascarpone cheese lists salt as "Trace" so even lower than philly so once we're through this pack of cream cheese, I might try her on mascarpone instead

Breakfast is still pretty rubbish though. She tends to have a really good breastfeed in a morning - both boobs, very enthusiastically - so maybe she's just too full to be arsed really. Plus all the baby cereals are just a bit, well, dull I think. Any ideas anyone? I've ordered some rice crispies with the next shop - can I just give her these with cow's milk and see how she goes? I did give her a bit of toast and jam last week , but even that wasn't met with any delight.

TIA

Wow JetLi sounds like your LO is really enjoying food! Really pleased for you. And you sound rather inspring with your meal ideas, I wish I was as good! My brain is frazzled from lack of sleep and toddler taming ...

On the breakfast front DS2 also eats least enthusiastically at this time and always has. Many many mornings he has had nothing but had several breastfeeds instead. Have tried all I can think of to offer him but the biggest hits are toast with pure fruit jam (got some from morrisons, no sugar) and fromage frais. Oh and the odd pear or nectarine if he's in the mood. I keep trying with various porridge formats- homeade proper stuff, "baby" stuff I said I wouldn't buy, loaded spoons, spoon feeding, self feeding..he's just not bothered. Going to try cranberry mini shredded wheats again tomorrow as they say it takes 15 times of trying something to get them to accept it....

Good luck with the rice krispies- let us know how it goes!

I've not posted in a while as it's all been going so well for the past few months, with DS attempting everything put in front of him but suddenly at 11 months he has his favourites and everything else gets thrown on the floor with disgust!

He has always preferred stronger tasting food (curry, chilli, extra mature cheddar, olives) and eats these with gusto but the all the healthy fruit, veg, yogurt he once gobbled he wont even entertain the idea of eating. He even now picks the veg out of his curry and just gobbles the sauce and rice. We usually have 2 spicy meals a week of which he eats an extroadinary sized portion until he's sat back in his highchair, belly big and round, but every other breakfast, lunch, dinner is ignored so he's now eating less than he did a couple months ago.

I don't know really what to do now? BLW was always an attractive option as I could give DS what we were eating and not prepare extra food but to get him to eat more am I going to have to start? And I'm not happy for him to be eating just curry as I thought BLW would avoid him being picky so now I'm quite frustrated!

eagerbeagle · 23/01/2010 11:01

Babybeagles favorite meal is brekkie although dinner can sometimes be a none event.

jetli babybeagle munches eggy bread like its no tomorrow at brekkie or toast with baked beans kind of spread on it. Also likes slices of cheese omelet or handfulls of scrambled egg, or the yolk of a fried egg. Followed up by fruit - banana, melon, mango and papaya being big faves in the beagle house. He also loves rice crispies although he doesn't get them much because they are quite high in salt. I also make a porridge made with half an apple finely grated into it before its cooked - makes it naturally sweet - which goes down well.

Hi, I'm new to BLW and have a 5 month old DD. We've not started weaning yet but I'm trying to work out what our plan should be and also what BLW is!!

I'm a bit worried about the gagging, what foods are good to start with? I'm happy to soft boil or mash foods so was wondering if this might be better to start with.

Any other hints and tips would be gratefully received or are there any good books to read?

KiwiPanda · 08/02/2010 18:05

Hello there, have just popped by to see how this thread is! My DD was BLW and at 13 months is now a brilliant eater.

Crumble That sounds like a typical phase. I really would try not to worry/ get annoyed by it because they all go through some degree of this and it sounds like he;s still eating something, so just go with the flow if you can. Also, I think they discover that it's just fun to throw things on the floor. DD still does that even if it's something she likes. I have a mat down there, sometimes I pick it up and give it back to her and she gobbles it up.. The floor is clean, honest guv..

Anyway it's lovely to see so many new BLW babies! Well, read about them anyway

KerenHappuch · 09/02/2010 22:40

Hi, DS2 is 5 months and I'm wondering about trying BLW this time round. DS1 was totally uninterested in food and hated finger food so I always felt like he'd starve if we left it to him! DS2 always looks like he'd love to get his hands on what we're eating though so it seems like he'd get on better with it. DS1 is still not very good at lumps of meat so maybe his baby brother eating them would spur him on a bit too?!

Tabitha8 · 12/02/2010 16:06

DS (aged 8 mths) has no interest in food. He eats hardly anything. I'm presuming that this will change in time..... Perhaps when he realises that food will fill him up, instead of just milk?
