Fellow weaners,

Hope you find this, our second thread. Haven't we been chatty! The title was borrowed from the kind words with which I was welcomed onto the thread by KiwiPanda. Hope you like...

On the topic of highchairs, I also have the ubiquitous Antilop from I**A, against my better judgement, damn them. It is awfully practical, even I will admit. Just shove a folded towel under her bum before feeds, saves on cushion washing

Felt brave today and administered both avocado AND blueberry muffins in the same meal. It was worth the mess to see her grinning little face at the end.

mrsjuan - ignorant question here, but how do you present jacket potato?

mrsjuan · 26/11/2009 19:18

I cheat quite a bit-it doesn't bear much resemblance to a jacket potato by the time she gets it.

I do them in the microwave so that the skin doesn't go too crispy then I just cut it into wedge shapes & let it cool a bit. The wedges hold themselves together just long enough for her to get to her mouth and start sucking at them.

Today I just grated some cheese over the wedges and it melted in as they were cooling which worked really well.

dawntigga · 26/11/2009 19:55

Hola,

Does anybody elses little monster angel shove as much food as they can get in their mouths for no real reason?

Scared the living daylights out of me the first time he did it!

IsItMeOr · 26/11/2009 20:52

Hola Tigga!

DS shoved a whole babybel in his mouth yesterday, if that counts? After attempting to eat it for a little while he then started full on crying with real tears (DH and I call this "baby real tears"). Very upsetting for everybody. But I think the reaction is either because he has a cold or teething (something is definitely up!).

He also tried to take his spoonful of calpol this evening by sticking his nose in it while inhaling. That went really badly.

dawntigga · 26/11/2009 21:18

IsItMeOr wait till he does it with vodka.

What is my child going to be able to rebel against?

mrsjuan · 26/11/2009 21:27

tigga This evening DD stuffed a load of pear in her mouth, skin and all. Then gagged & I expected it to come out again, but no, she consoled herself by stuffing a load more in on top of it

She was sitting there like a little hamster with pear juice pouring out of her mouth but she refused to relinquish her food. She must have swallowed it eventually because it didn't come out again.

Maplemama · 27/11/2009 05:55

jeffily - my little one really enjoys homemade burgers. We have an indoor grill so they are not too greasy and then I just break a small one in half. There is nothing he enjoys eating better!

eagerbeagle · 27/11/2009 06:04

tigga babybeagle has been known to ram a whole potato wedge in and then try and fit something else in on top. Much to my distress. He gets well narky then when it gets stuck in his top palate and I have to fish it out for him.

Also wondered if you ladies know when to call it quits on meals. Babybeagle will just keep going and get more and frustrated so now I am cutting it short when he starts to get shirty and its not fun anymore. He doesn't just stop trying to put things in his mouth.

But then I think we are due some new teeth imminently so I think this is impacting on his desire to put things in his mouth and how much his gums must be irritating him.

IsItMeOr · 27/11/2009 07:29

eagerbeagle IsItMeBaby will usually stop putting things in his mouth eventually. Usually this is followed by him starting to throw food around and/or starting to cry.

But meals can easily take 45mins-hour.

IsItMeOr · 27/11/2009 07:33

IsItMeBaby had his 8 month check yesterday, and I was pleasantly surprised at how positive the HV was. She seemed happy to hear that IIMB is still BF, impressed that he has now gone slightly above the 25th percentile with (mostly) self-feeding for 3 meals a day and generally chilled about the whole thing. I guess people only post about their bad experiences with HV/GPs on here, as I was expecting at least one comment.

YodaisaCat · 27/11/2009 19:21

eagerbeagle I was wondering when to stop too. My DS will usually start to fuss and whine when he's had enough, but on the other hand that could mean 'more please'! Difficult to judge sometimes as he too is one for stuffing everything in sight in his mouth in a hugely enthusiastic way. So perhaps he could go on doing this for longer. Today he projectile-spat out a lump of runner bean, then immediately grabbed it and put it in his mouth again. It didn't come out again...

I've seen lots of evidence of food in his nappies, which makes me wonder why it's worth eating if it just comes straight through! But I suppose it takes a while for them to digest everything and maybe they get some goodness as they chew/suck/it passes through. Hmm, maybe I've answered my own query!

dawntigga · 27/11/2009 21:54

eagerbeagle I usually stop when baby tigga starts playing with his plastic blow up chair support - we got the anitlop high chair and bits

Glad it's not just me who has a baby who stuffs his mouth then!

baby tigga is due his 8 month check next month I intend to nod a lot and carry on.

I am such a bad mother baby tigga likes chips best of all the potato things he's been given.

That's a whole new thread - things you've fed your baby you know you aren't suppose to but they love

Tigga chocolate brownie. Every last crumb picked up off the high chair and eaten...

Elfytigga · 29/11/2009 07:47

cara have so far resisted the temptation to give baby tigga chocolate. That will all change on Monday when he has his H1N1 injection

Hello!

Not posted for a while as RL took over and then we've all been struck with nasty colds. DS hasn't been eating quite so much whilst he's had a cold as he's stuffed up and struggling to breathe. I use saline nasal drops and have a vaporiser but he still struggles.

Generally though he loves roasted parsnip, sweet potato and peppers but doesn't seem so keen on steamed carrot, broccoli and courgette!
Still a firm favourite is breadsticks or rice cakes with humous or Philly.

Still struggling to get 3 meals a day sorted. Either he's asleep or over tired for one of his meals.

Tried satsumas today which he seemed to like but he sucks on a whole little segment and then it flies out of his mouth! He picks it up and puts it back in though.

BabySES is another May baby, born on 9th May!!

mrsjuan · 29/11/2009 21:49

isitmeor sounds like baby isitme is doing really well - I tend to do a lot of nodding and mmm-ing with health visitor as even though she gave me a leaflet about BLW she still assumed I was doing purees. Babyjuan's weight has rocketed since starting BLW - she's finally on the 2nd centile after being below the 0.4th for a good while.

Essenceof SES did you find that your DS got a rash from the satsuma? Babyjuan had a good suck at a segment yesterday but had a rash around her mouth after - I suppose from the acid. I'm not sure whether to hold off giving them to her for a while or just make sure I wash her face carefully straight away.

We've had two big breakthroughs today - first, DD decided this morning to eat her readybrek with her hands rather than off the loaded spoon. It was pretty messy but she was quite efficient.

And then, this evening we had a roast dinner and it it seems as though DD is getting the beginnings of a pincer grip. She is using her thumb and 2 or 3 fingers to pick up quite small bits and she managed to eat quite a few pieces of food

Elfytigga · 30/11/2009 07:24

mrsjuan baby tigga has very sensitive skin, if anything touches his face that isn't bland it will go red very quickly, I spend quite a lot of my time being scared these days. We accept it now and move on, he never seems in any distress about it.

Been lurking for a while and about to start BLW next week with my DD. Filled with nervous excitment about it. I have read the BLW book and get the general gist of it but aside from those mentioned in the book is there anything I absolutely must not give her to start with? E.g with regard to nuts is it safe enough to cook things with cashews (maybe not immediately) and are all oils ok to cook with (aside maybe from peanut oil). Sorry probably stupid questions just a bit nervous as this is my first child. Just as I get the hang if bf I need to start thinking about weaning!

Thanks in advance

shinny · 05/12/2009 18:10

hi ladies

I'm excited to be starting BLW at about Christmas but DS (5.5months) is already seeming impatient to eat...have tried him on a bit of pear (he choked), melon (loved it) and a few grains of rice as he was bellowing at me whilst I was eating dinner last night. I don't want to rush it just cos I'm keen (and also slightly nervous..) and he's not even sat in his highchair yet....We live in the middle east (Abu Dhabi) so will have to plan the food a bit as well as certain things are easier to get than others. This thread is great and has already given me ideas. Anyone else starting at Xmas time? I'd love to compare notes...???

Shinny

Maplemama · 06/12/2009 02:45

i'd just like to share that I tried giving my little one a slice of roasted portobello mushroom, and was that every a mistake! I though he had swallowed it, but I was pulling out pieces of it from his mouth for the next half hour and he was drooling black. oops

JumeirahJingle · 07/12/2009 14:26

Hello, it's been a while. So many new faces, it's great to read your stories.

Shinny - I'm not too far away - in Dubai - we've found most foods are available here without having to adapt too much. The only tricky thing we've found is that food labelling isn't regulated like back home, so we are cooking alot from scratch rather than risk cans and packets, or getting UK imports at over-inflated prices.

Mcflumpy, don't be nervous, take each meal as it comes. Re nuts - they don't easily soften so can present a choking hazard even when cooked, but ground up into a sauce (like our fave butter chicken recipe), should be fine. Just follow usual guidelines re allergies - ie introduce one new food at a time.

Mrsj and Tigga - contact rashes can be minimised by applying formulated anti-allergen moisturiser daily (serves as a barrier), and yes careful cleaning their faces after eating.

JumeirahJunior is teething, so quite off her food at the moment, but that didn't stop her demanding a crumb of brownie - bad mummy! Otherwise, we're still managing a quite balanced diet but struggling to squeeze in 3 meals a day as we start breakfast around 8, lunch around 1, and then she tends to fall asleep at 6pm before I can think about dinner. If she then wakes up it's only for milk, not solids - have tried but she falls asleep in her highchair. Any pointers?

cupcake75 · 07/12/2009 16:50

Hello, not much progress here as babycupcake has had a cold, ear infection and teething to contend with. She was off solids for about a week and seems to be back at the beginning with regards to understanding that food can be eaten and not just thrown about. Sigh...

PoppetOne · 09/12/2009 22:51

Hi All!

This is one of my first posts but I have been lurking around for a while.

First, I just want to say that I am humbled and amazed at the wealth of knowledge and information freely (and truthfully) given by everyone here - if only RL was the same! . I am FTM, if you couldn't guess.

Second, I would like some advice please.....
My DD 8 & half months today, basically her diet consists of (over 3 meals): porridge, fruit purees (apple & mango), yoghurt, chicken casserole (mashed), salmon & broccoli with cheese (pureed), Sweet potato & parsnip (mashed & chip-shaped), cubes of cheese, ham & chicken, strips of pitta with dairylea. Recently progressed to rice cakes with hummous.
Each meal is followed by bottle of formula - I offer 5 oz after each and she has a bottle morning and evening. Unfortunately, I buggered up my BF at 7 months - went on a course & couldn't keep the expressing up
I also offer water, sometimes with juice as she is reluctant to drink from a cup.

Anyway, I think her diet is a bit light on Carbs(?) and she seems to get really frustrated when feeding herself.....as if the food isn't coming quick enough. She has meals/bottle every 3 hours and (luckily) she sleeps through the night....soooo I am assuming I am on the right track - not ALL BLW but trying to be. I would love to see her sat with the family on Christmas day, eating her Christmas dinner with everyone .

Sorry for the long post, is there anything, anyone thinks I should/shouldn't be doing?

Cheers in advance! xxx

Beveridge · 11/12/2009 21:33

Hello! Been BLW for a few weeks now, finding the whole weaning thing a bit of a challenge but reassured by reading other recent posts on this thread and others in Weaning (the "how can I possibly fit 3 meals in" and "getting stuck in a rut" ishoos are ones I have definitely been having).

However, just when i was having a flap the other day about how disinterested she seemed to be at times, she had banana porridge for breakfast yesterday and went mad for it!She also tried lamb's liver tonight - bit off a small piece, chewed it very seriously for quite some time and then swallowed successfully! She is also loving tatties, especially when mixed with gravy from a stew (I'm using Boots Baby Organic stock cubes and they work really well, DH and I found that we could really taste the meat in the stew for a change, unlike when you use heaps of Bisto like I normally do ). Lots of garlic and well stewed onions in there too.

So I am feeling like progress is being made, albeit slowly. babyBev is also quite good with a spoon, I do loaded spoons and even when I do occasionally try and guide a spoonful towards her mouth (if I feel she's having a hard time!), she'll intercept it with her hands and pull it towards her mouth. Or she is quite clear she doesn't want it, as she doesn't grab the spoon so we leave it at that.

She's loving water, which i find a bit weird but I suppose when you've only drank milk all your life I suppose it is quite exciting! She was grabbing my cup and trying to drink the water out of that the other day while sitting on my knee, made me realise just how much my little girl is growing up!
