Fellow weaners,

Hope you find this, our second thread. Haven't we been chatty! The title was borrowed from the kind words with which I was welcomed onto the thread by KiwiPanda. Hope you like...

On the topic of highchairs, I also have the ubiquitous Antilop from I**A, against my better judgement, damn them. It is awfully practical, even I will admit. Just shove a folded towel under her bum before feeds, saves on cushion washing

Felt brave today and administered both avocado AND blueberry muffins in the same meal. It was worth the mess to see her grinning little face at the end.

...not avocado muffins of course, you know what I meant!

Oh and linking back to the old thread to keep things tidy.

hello, i'd love to come and ask questions that have already been asked before and have my hand held in general please. my boy is 24 weeks and after debuting on porridge for a week after having knicked some of mine, today enjoyed sucking pear, banana, broccoli and cucumber.

i'm rather excited and a bit anxious..

greensnail · 18/10/2009 20:10

ooh how exciting, shiny new thread. Love the title JumeirahJane.

Welcome frekkles hope you and DS have fun

I've been feeling really sick today so have been constantly snacking to try to keep the nausea away and DD has joined me. I think she managed a lot more of our roast dinner this evening than I did! She's also been a real milk monster today so maybe she's having a growth spurt or something.

mrsjuan · 18/10/2009 20:26

Can I come & join you on your new thread? We have officially got 4 weeks to go but madam has already grabbed at an apple and a banana & picked up a mushroom & took it to her mouth like a pro yesterday so we might not make it that that far!

greensnail · 18/10/2009 20:30

hi mrsjuan that sounds like real baby-led weaning if she's helping herself already, sounds like she'll be right at home here, welcome

Reesie · 18/10/2009 22:09

Hello - can I join in? I've just started weaning dd2. DD1 was also BLW'd - but I have forgotten about how to do it!

First time around - I used to make bits of roated veg for her to try - now with dd1 being 2 1/2 - I just give dd2 whatever we are all having for food.

dd2 is now 25 weeks - she started to feed herself last week. I know it's early and I am in no hurry - but she just seemed desperate to get started. Even just a week into things - she seems obsessed by food. Yesterday - she ate a huge bowl of porridge and raspberries, lunch was a slice of bread with cream cheese with cranberries and tea was salmon, mashed potato and peas. She is eating the lot - there isn't any of it that gets on the floor - it's all going into her mouth, chewed and swallowed. She's eating more than my toddler.

Surely - this isn't normal. DD1 took a few weeks to get into the flow of things. DD2 seems to try and dive across to you if you have the cheek of trying to eat anything when she is around.

She is quite a decent size baby - I think she is about 19 lbs. I'm bf and she also wakes up in the night about 4 times to feed.(I'm cosleeping - otherwise would have no sleep).

Anybody out there with early ravenous babies?

greensnail · 18/10/2009 22:18

Hi Reesie I've been hanging around the weaning threads for months now and it seems some babies do attack food with great enthusiasm and success right from the beginning. I think they tend to slow down a bit after the first few weeks as the novelty wears off a bit. Welcome to the thread

cara2244 · 18/10/2009 22:21

Great idea and I love the new title!

gs sorry to hear about your nausea.

Reesie my BB was a gannet at first, but he sort of found his feet around 8 months and lost interest a bit, in favour of milk. We never had any choking incidents, and only a couple of gags early on. It's lovely when they take to it like that!

poorbuthappy · 18/10/2009 22:27

Hey all... doing sort of half and half BLW/Spoons due to weigh issues with the twins...but last night they ate fish pie themselves and ate far more than if I had been spooning it in!
We gave them lamb hotpot for dinner today and this was slightly less successful due to consistently being more suited to rubbing in hair than putting in mouth!

And they absolutely love tuc cheese sandwhich biscuits!

heron22 · 19/10/2009 13:34

hi all can i join in please?

my LO is 9 months old and kind started BLW the other day. not much is going in, he takes the odd bite and drops the rest on the floor, table wherever!

is this normal? what about milk? i am still giving him his usual amount.

reesie wow, ur LO is doing so well eating all that food! i wish mine would!

JumeirahJane · 19/10/2009 13:53

Reesie - hope it all comes flooding back to you. Impressed at your DD2's amazing appetite!! Must be easier with an older one as well, hey, as you're already geared up for feeding someone else but yourself? Ooh, raspberries - that gives me an idea!

Hey Frekkles (good to see you here, I wondered if any of the April(/May) babies might be BLWing ) It really is so exciting, to see their little faces as they play and experiment with food isn't it? Don't be too nervous - main thing I've learnt in the last 3 weeks is to go with the flow.

Hello Mrsjuan - I lurked round these threads nervously too for a few weeks to pluck up the courage, glad I did - otherwise I'd have been terrified of 'introducing' finger foods.

poorbuthappy - loving the name. at rubbing in the hair, mightn't they find avocado and olive oil more conventional than lamb?!

greensnail - how old is babysnail now? forgive me if you've already told me. I don't know how you cope with the nausea? Hope you manage to get some rest. I can't imagine the bfing and pg all at once, you are a saint. We've also just been through a growth spurt at 6.5 months, and I still feel a bit shrivelled .

So today was cauliflower cheese day, and a friend came round for lunch. She was mighty impressed by M's capabilities, and said she'd never seen the likes of it before She also commented that M smells lovely, compared to babies she knows who are fed on purees - am a bit , could this really be the food, or my fastidious hygiene efforts? Anyone else experienced this? Nice if true.

OP posts:
JumeirahJane · 19/10/2009 13:58

heron22 - hi! sounds like your LO is making the transition from purees to finger food?? I know that milk provides most of the necessary nutrition from 6-9 months, but after that I'm a bit shaky as to when the actual weaning happens. May one of the more experienced ladies might be able to advise, as we've just been doing finger foods from 6 months and milk is still her main source of nutrition. Good luck!

jumeirahjane hi, how old is your LO?

JumeirahJane · 19/10/2009 14:14

Reesie - my DD is 6 and a half months, so still very new to all this.

heron22 · 19/10/2009 17:36

jjane i am so new to all this too! am giving this a go because my LO just does not like me spoonfeeding him. DH says LO is stubborn like me
maybe true!

Hulla · 19/10/2009 18:18

I am loving the new thread! Thanks JJ

Welcome new-BLWers!

High chairs, we have this one: Chicco Polly Magic. We got so we could have dd at table height before she could sit unsupported (it reclines and suitable from newborn). We love it but it is an absolute nightmare to clean.

Glad the pancakes are working out well. I tried them with berries today but with less success. I think the cery chopped apple gives the batter a sweetness but that didn't work with whole berries. Might do apple and berries...hmmm

DD doesn't seem to bothered about eating at the moment. She did well with butternut & spinach risotto at lunch but chicken curry last night was just thrown on the floor, same with breakfast this morning. She is also not fussed on vegetables anymore unless I put them in something (like risotto). I'm trying not to be worried....

Reesie we co-sleep too. My dd usually has more night feeds than day feeds. I just try to trust that she knows how much milk and food she needs.

Oh GreenSnail morning sickness was awful, I struggled until about 20 weeks. I recall being sat on my stairs, sobbing at feeling so awful for so long and then next day it was gone - well, vastly improved. I found Twinings peppermint tea and salt & vinegar crips really helped (not very healthy I know but I just ate anything I could cope with in the 1st trimester).

frekkles · 19/10/2009 18:55

hello everyone, thanks for the welcome and welcome to the other new weaners. Hey jj ! you remind me, i must go and say hey to the april ladies too while I'm online.

todays question is! my little one is getting really frustrated and ending up most mealtimes screaming. He seems either over excited or frustrated that he can't pick everything up. Frustration is especially true with fruit like pears and bananas. I'm trying leaving the skin on things and just peeling a bit at one end for him to eat. but his little hands get slippery after a couple of gnaws and then he can't pick it up any more. And with the excitement, he starts each mealtime happy and curious and with ten minutes seems to get more and more excited until he's over stimulated and screaming. Any suggestions and reassurances?

Hulla · 19/10/2009 19:28

How big are you cutting the pears? DD doesn't like banana but pear, she loves! I make it kind of chip sized and leave the skin on. She still gets frustrated with some foods. If its very slippy, sometimes I'll hold it and she'll holding my fingers, guiding them to her mouth.

frekkles · 19/10/2009 19:40

I'm making them chip sized too, and today I tried a whole pear with the top peeled. I kind of worried about leaving the skin on. Is it OK to do that? I have held it for him too while he has a suck when he gets too frustrated, but I thought that would be counterproduction long term as he's not learning how to do it himself.

Hulla · 19/10/2009 19:45

He'll get it eventually frekkles. I haven't peeled much fruit but watched dd like a hawk. I am too afraid to give her apple though

Hulla · 19/10/2009 19:46

Have you tried dried fruit? Apricots & figs - v good and easy to grip and pull on.

toppoptart · 19/10/2009 20:32

Hello can i join your thread please ,i have a nearly 8 month DD who is BLW she hardly eats anything at all, the dog gets most of it!
