Anyone just started, or about to start, BLW? Care to join me?

1000 replies

Jojay · 03/05/2009 16:46

DS2 is 27 weeks and from last week, is now joining us a mealtimes.

I tried spoonfeeding for a few days but he didn't seem keen, so I tried him with some roasted veg and he was well away. So BLW it is for us.

But I did purees for DS1 2 years ago, so BLW is new to me.

So far he's had roasted sweet potato, carrot, aubergine, courgette, sweet pepper, some lightly steamed apple and pear, banana, mango, and a chip.

When I say 'had' I mean I've offered it to him. Some probably went straight on the floor, but I've found some lumps in his nappy, so some is definitely going in.

The mango was the biggest hit - he loved it!

So tell me what you're doing and how it's going...........

What a cutie! I may post a couple later, just sorting through some photos now.

greensnail · 29/09/2009 20:40

Aww thanks, yes she can be very cheeky

cara2244 · 30/09/2009 12:05

I've posted a pic!

greensnail · 30/09/2009 13:46

cara, I can't click on your name to see your profile and photos. Am I being thick - or do you need to change your settings so we can see your photo?

cara2244 · 01/10/2009 12:52

Should work now. The pic is BB eating a chocolate croissant slice of wholemeal toast.

KiwiPanda · 01/10/2009 13:06

Hello all. DD seems to have no interest in food at the mo, dunno why. She's demanding milk constantly and having epic feeds in the morning (on and off for an hour! Usually she's a 5 to 10 min girl!). If I even wave anything other than bread or cheese in her general direction she hits my arm away... Hmmm. Most unlike her. I'd think growth spurt but she's not that interested in milk in the afternoon. She's quite happy so not ill... Hmmm again.

greensnail · 01/10/2009 13:28

aww, Cara - another cutie

KiwiPanda dd has been a bit like that too recently. I've started to think that actually its her just starting to demonstrate her preferences. She's just eaten loads of pasta with pesto, but I have a feeling that if i'd tried to give her a sandwich for lunch, she would hardly have touched it.

Ok, I know this thread is supposed to be about weaning, but I think of you guys as my friends, and I just have to share this news. Just done a pg test and I got a BFP ! Am terrified, but also excited. Don't know what DH is going to say when I tell him

KiwiPanda · 01/10/2009 15:13

OMG!! Wow-a-bloody-rama as DH would say!! Was it a shock?? A happy accident? Will your DH be happy/terrified/excited?? You ARE a glutton for punishment aren't you . Huge congratulations!! I think I am in for you! Practice this phrase: "mother of two"...

How do you feel????

greensnail · 01/10/2009 15:27

I'm exhausted, and starving - well i suppose i am eating for 3!

I think DH will indeed be happy, terrified and excited! I'm not that shocked as I've had a feeling for a few days, although did a test a couple of days ago that was neg. Is a happy accident. Have told DD but she doesn't seem bothered that she's going to be a big sister! Its quite nice to think i won't have long at work before I get to leave again!

bunnybunyip · 01/10/2009 16:29

I have to pop back here now to say: congratulations greensnail!

KiwiPanda · 01/10/2009 19:12

I bet you are knackered, I was knackered enough at the beginning of pregnancy and I didn't have a baby to look after!! You are a braver woman than me, i can tell you!

greensnail · 01/10/2009 19:50

Thanks Well DH took it very well, he just laughed initially. Think he's quite pleased with himself

cara2244 · 01/10/2009 20:34

gs wow congratulations that is so exciting!

BB has been funny with food lately too. Maybe it's a nine month thing? He's had loads of milk today and missed lunch as he was sleeping.

Tonight's dinner was a weird one: a bit of jacket potato with melted cheese (mostly ignored), egg fried rice with broccoli (a favourite, but completely ignored), Organix crisps (wolfed down), king prawns (attacked with great interest, despite always ignoring them in the past), cold roast chicken (launched over the side in disgust), yoghurt (enough to feed a small army), blueberries (gimme more gimme more - first time I've known him eat more than a couple), strawberries (wolfed down, though dropped as soon as blueberries re-appeared).

Can you tell I just went shopping? He doesn't normally get that much variety!

greensnail · 01/10/2009 20:44

wow - that is a lot of variety! we had beef stew, wolfed down with "nom, nom, nom" noises all the way through Then rice pudding. DD is getting very good with a loaded spoon - hardly spills a drop now.

KiwiPanda · 02/10/2009 19:36

Greensnail When are you due? One of my NCT pals just told me she's pregnant too and I reckon you must be due same time with your second(s)!

In other news, DD still being very strange with food. This evening she wanted banana, but if I so much as passed it to her she got stroppy, she would only eat it if I had NOTHING to do with it. Quite funny really! Cara I think you might be right about it being a 9 month thing, I was chatting to a friend this morning and her DD was the same at this age. Loads of my NCT friends are saying their babies are being funny and wanting only to feed themselves. I guess when they are BLW and have ONLY ever fed themselves they get funny in different ways..?

Also, has anyone else discovered that one of the major disadvantages of BLW is that their DCs will pick up and eat anything?? DD has been playing in lots of parks recently with her little friends, they all crawl around after each other but DD picks up and tries to eat all the leaves/cigarette butts/insects and I have to follow her round constantly retrieving them from her mouth . The non-BLW babies don't seem so bad...!

KiwiPanda · 02/10/2009 19:37

Oh and this afternoon she attempted to stalk a pigeon. It was priceless actually, she kept crawling towards them as fast as she could and then shouting when they waddled/flew away...

greensnail · 02/10/2009 19:58

Yes I have that exact problem KiwiPanda. DD will eat anything she finds on the ground. Is particularly fond of dried leaves. When I take her out with my while I hang out the washing I spend the entire time pulling stuff from her mouth. She had to be removed from the sandpit on monday for excessive sand eating and she kept lunging at the neighbour's cat last week when we were eating in the garden - the cat was after DD's tuna sandwich though, so that was fair enough.

I've got a wonderful image of her chasing the pigeon though. Reminds me of a friend's toddler chasing sheep at my brother's farm he was toddling after them shouting "come back sheep!"

The MN due date calculator is saying 5th June as my due date, but I'm not convinced this is right - i suppose my cycle may have been a bit strange due to bfing. Think i may need a dating scan to know for sure but I suppose it will be early June. Very different to last time - I could tell you when DD was conceived down to the last second

JumeirahJane · 02/10/2009 20:18

Just nosied at your pics, what a beautiful bunch of babies ! Even with scoff all round their darling chops.

So today was W day, and DD got very excited about a cheese sandwich, was totally ambivalent about cucumber, and as expected demolished half of a half of banana, though most of that ended up round her knees. It was alot more fun than we'd expected, though the clean-up was phenomenal for such a small amount of food! I imagine that's normal

She had an exciting evening as well, accompanying us to an early evening out with friends, and got lots of compliments.

gs I know we've only just met but big wow for your pg news. Congrats!

greensnail · 02/10/2009 20:25

And congrats to you JumeirahJane on W day. Eating out on her first day, glad you're starting as you mean to go on

DrCosyTiger · 03/10/2009 17:52

Jumeirah, welcome! I'm very impressed by your first day too. But oh the mess, you're right about that. I've not posted for a while as have been coping with pt return to work, urrgh. All is going well still in the Cosy Tiger household on the BLW front though. Been at it for almost 4weeks now. Have settled into a pattern of porridge and fruit for breakfast which DD scoops up from her tray and shovels in. Now that is messy - keep finding dried on bits of porridge all over DD and the house. And we've been doing an evening meal too. Started with roast veg and broccoli florets but now trying to be more adventurous and give DD what we are having. So tonight it's lentil dal and yoghurt which is going down surprisingly well so far. May introduce lunch soon but a bit unsure about when to do it or what to give, hmmm. Has to be something easy for the 2 full days a week DD is with cm.

Greensnail, many congratulations that's such exciting news! I've been following your posts on this thread and have enjoyed hearing all about Baby Snail and will look forward to hearing about Baby Snail 2 in a year's time.

KiwiPanda · 03/10/2009 18:10

Welcome Jumeirah don't mind the mess in here, and mind the lentils on the floor

DD is still being very strange. If I offer her anything she whacks my hand or throws it on the floor. DH is currently passing her things and she's even taking the spoon - but only if he stands BEHIND her. Nutty child. I think she'd probably be happiest if we left the room and let her get on with it! I think we have created a BLW monster...

Sospan · 05/10/2009 19:26

Greensnail - wow, congratulations! What lovely news How are you feeling today?

Jumeirah - how was your 1st W-weekend??

Kiwi - your DD sounds like a proper character .

Poor old baby Sospan has been ill (croup, then hacking cough, and is currently a snot factory). He was totally off solids for a week (my poor boobs!) but today has started eating again - hurrah! However, he seems to have totally forgotten how to feed himself and has been putting his arms behind his back and thrusting his face forward like a demented baby bird. He seems to be still fine with lumps and chewing, etc (was gagging on yoghurt though ). Has anyone else experienced similar after an illness? Will he get the hang of it again soon?

cara2244 · 05/10/2009 20:42

Hi all
BB is going through a fruit phase - no interest in dinner tonight but ate about 30 blueberries!

In other news, MIL is pressuring me to give up BF, so he can stay over there/go stay at the seaside with them! I really don't want to give up until he's ready, or he gets to 1.
Anyone else had this?

In yet more news, I am in work all week this week and next week as my jobshare partner is off. Aaargh! Terrified! I am only in during the mornings Weds-Friday so it shouldn't affect my BF too much.

KiwiPanda · 05/10/2009 21:05

Sospan - DD's been off her food a bit and has now come down with streaming cold, watery eyes etc so am fully expecting same! Glad your DS is better now though, poor mite sounds like he's had a tough week!

Cara - I would tell your MIL.. well actually what I would tell your MIL is not fit for print Fortunately I haven't had any pressure to stop - what does your DH/DP think? Would quoting some health benefits etc of BFing help?! I think it's incredibly selfish of her to want you to stop doing something which could have major long term health benefits for her grandchild just so she can have him stay - especially when he's so little! Hope that's not too harsh.

Oh and good luck at work!!

greensnail · 05/10/2009 21:41

Hi all, I've been feeling ok today. Managed without an afternoon nap anyway Am just so, so hungry! DD and I have both been grazing all day, she seems to be enjoying all the snacks.

Poor baby Sospan, sounds like he's had a rotten time. Hope he's feeling better soon. Hope babyPanda gets over her cold soon too.

cara, I get the feeling from MIL that she thinks I shouldn't still be bfing. She hasn't said anything directly to me though, and lives too far away for it to really be an issue. I'm lucky that my mum BF'd me and my brother till we were a year old, so she's really supportive at the moment - not sure how she'll be if we're still going when she's much older though - will cross that bridge if and when I come to it. DH is very supportive too, although seemed surprised that I thought DD might still be feeding when the new baby arrives. I told him the WHO guidelines though, and seemed happy enough with this. I know MIL's aren't usually that easily convinced though
