Anyone just started, or about to start, BLW? Care to join me?

Jojay · 03/05/2009 16:46

DS2 is 27 weeks and from last week, is now joining us a mealtimes.

I tried spoonfeeding for a few days but he didn't seem keen, so I tried him with some roasted veg and he was well away. So BLW it is for us.

But I did purees for DS1 2 years ago, so BLW is new to me.

So far he's had roasted sweet potato, carrot, aubergine, courgette, sweet pepper, some lightly steamed apple and pear, banana, mango, and a chip.

When I say 'had' I mean I've offered it to him. Some probably went straight on the floor, but I've found some lumps in his nappy, so some is definitely going in.

The mango was the biggest hit - he loved it!

So tell me what you're doing and how it's going...........

glad DD is feeling better KiwiPanda - DS2 tried avocado today and appears to think its the food of the devil...

greensnail · 20/08/2009 22:43

Hi all I'm back, been away from the computer for a bit - real life getting in the way. Hope my post makes sense - I've just got back from the pub .

Banana skin - dd seems to prefer it to the actual banana - strange child. Although after swimming last week she managed to demolish an entire banana in about 30 seconds! She was obviously hungry!

She's got so much more precise with her food the last weeks or so. Pincer grip is getting better and she can now pick up tiny pieces of food, although they don't always make it to her mouth successfully.

KiwiPanda, I can sympathise with your poo issues - we were at my parents last weekend and I think dd ate half their plum tree while we were there. The first half of the week we had hugely runny nappies with lumps of plum skin in them - very pleasant

KiwiPanda · 21/08/2009 20:01

Hey greensnail was wondering where you were! Hope you had a nice time at your parents. Did they make a big fuss of babysnail?

DD demolished huge amounts for her tea - she's also getting really good at the pincer grip, was extremely impressed that she ate several peas and a couple of sultanas, picked them up so neatly, bless her. Of course, that was the only thing neat about her meal! Really must get something to put on the floor...

cara2244 · 21/08/2009 20:42

What else can you give once the pincer grip starts developing? He's had blueberries, raisins, Rice Krispies (more a fluke I think) and rice.

I've started using a suction bowl and he eats everything with fingers now, instead of a loaded spoon - yoghurt, porridge, curry, bolognese etc.

Messy!!!

ThePinkOne · 21/08/2009 20:57

Hi! I've been BLW for a few weeks but not joined this thread yet.

Just thought I'd share a 'recipe' that I made DS for dinner tonight. Although it's probably been done before! I had cooked rice for us so I put together a spoon of rice and roughly equal quantity of grated cheese. Squodge together and microwave for about 10 seconds, then refrigerate to set a bit.

Went down very well!

littleboyblue · 21/08/2009 21:17

ThePinkOne Sounds interesting. Nice and quick too, just what we like

greensnail · 22/08/2009 15:04

Hi KiwiPanda yes babysnail gets truly spoilt by her grandparents, and they are so impressed with her eating skills. They've been over here the last few days and we just got back from a pub lunch with them. DD and I shared a grazing platter, worked very well as she seemed to love the bits that i wasn't so keen on

We're going to visit the other set of grandparents soon who are a lot further away, so have only seen her a couple of times, think the spoiling is going to reach a whole new high!

cara Peas and sweetcorn are good fun pincer grip foods. As are crumbs off the floor

KiwiPanda · 23/08/2009 10:52

BabyPanda was picking up indvidual red lentils yesterday! I was very impressed. Not sure I could do that with my chewed fingernails!

littleboyblue · 23/08/2009 11:10

Good for BabyPanda
We had tuna pasta with peas and sweetcorn last night. Ds2 ate loads! This self-feeding is going really well

greensnail · 23/08/2009 14:29

That's very impressive! Not sure babysnail would have the patience for picking up lentils.

littleboyblue · 23/08/2009 18:54

I want to do Shepherds Pie for dinner tomorrow. Anyone know a sauce or something for it that's low salt?

greensnail · 23/08/2009 20:26

Oh I must try dd with shepherds pie again, we did it with her ages ago but she wasn't too keen, reckon she'd probably love it now though.

I don't tend to use a special sauce - I just cook the mince with some stock, boots do baby stock cubes which are low in salt. I just tend to chuck in whatever veg i have hanging around with the mince while its cooking. Then cover it with mash, yum yum

DD ate half of my salmon this evening must either start cooking more for her, or sit her closer to her dad.

KiwiPanda · 23/08/2009 20:47

I do the same as greensnail - only vegetarian version for us so I chuck in lentils or something with protein too. And we also use Boots baby stock cubes.

We went out for lunch yesterday, DD scoffed pizza and then swiped and ate a huge bit of carrot cake with icing when she was on DH's lap. That was a healthy meal - not!

Our childless friends were mesmerised.. I think it's partly cos she's so little yet eats so much, you wonder where on earth it all goes. Well, something got to power her incessant wriggling I suppose. And now she's pretty much crawling so I'll have to baby-proof the house

cara2244 · 23/08/2009 21:01

Went to grandma's today for Sunday lunch and BB ate trifle, cake (both homemade) but no savoury food whatsoever! Aaargh! Keep telling myself milk is all he needs....

greensnail · 23/08/2009 21:25

lbb i'm really fancying shepherds pie now after reading your other thread

KiwiPanda I wouldn't worry too much about one unhealthy meal, sounds like babyPanda has a far healthier diet than most.
Wish there was any wonder about where babysnail's food goes, she's getting chubbier and chubbier all the time. I thought their weight gain was supposed to slow down, but she doesn't seem to have realised that. I wonder if she'll ever get moving as she has so much bulk to haul around

littleboyblue · 23/08/2009 21:58

greensnail Thanks for that. All the suggestions sound really yummy. Might have to experiment with them
KiwiPanda I agree with gs I'm sure your dd will be fine on the odd 'junk' meal, after all, it's all about a balanced diet isn't it? Just think of all those wonderful calories she got to help her energy levels in learning to crawl
green My ds1 was a big lump. He didn't get crawling til he was 10 months! Ds2 is showing more signs of it happening sooner though, but he is not as big as ds1 was.

KiwiPanda · 24/08/2009 10:42

Gah I've got a shepherd's pie craving too and it's only 10.40am!

BabyPanda was being very lazy this morning. Couldn't be bothered to feed herself any fruit but was lunging for the weetabix/yoghurt combo that is her current favourite. Mind you she didn't have much of that either, she doesn't seem to be into her brekkie at the moment. Unlike her mother. I can't stop eating at the moment. It's mother-led selfweaning gone bad

Hulla · 24/08/2009 11:54

Morning all! Sorry I've been away again - visiting my new nephew

I'm going to give gnocci a try today but I don't know what with? I was planning to make pasta tonight so didn't want to give her a tomato based sauce for both meals.

Can I serve it plain?

Hulla · 24/08/2009 12:02

gnocchi

Hulla · 24/08/2009 12:03

damnit, right the first time

littleboyblue · 24/08/2009 12:21

Hulla I'm to say I am unsure what gnocci is...........

Ds2 is tucking into houmous and red pepper sandwiches now.
Having Shepherds Pie tonight, will be messy!

Hulla · 24/08/2009 12:54

Its Italian potato dough shaped, you'll be not surprised to hear for me, in little balls!

Oh thats a good idea, I have only used houmous on bread sticks

dinkystinky · 24/08/2009 13:00

Hulla - how about gnocchi with some pesto and grated cheese?

Hulla · 24/08/2009 14:04

We don't have any pesto so she ended up with philly, garlic & basil. It was a bit slippy but when she could hold it she loved it!
Thanks dinky

greensnail · 24/08/2009 15:12

mmm, gnocchi with pesto sounds fab I'm also very hungry today and dd hasn't eaten much. Seemed uninterested at breakfast and we were at a friend's house for lunch and she was more interested in watching the other children eat.

Anyone got any clever tips on how to make mango easier to hold? babysnail loves it but i have to hold it for her otherwise it just slips through her fingers.
