Anyone just started, or about to start, BLW? Care to join me?

1000 replies

Jojay · 03/05/2009 16:46

DS2 is 27 weeks and from last week, is now joining us a mealtimes.

I tried spoonfeeding for a few days but he didn't seem keen, so I tried him with some roasted veg and he was well away. So BLW it is for us.

But I did purees for DS1 2 years ago, so BLW is new to me.

So far he's had roasted sweet potato, carrot, aubergine, courgette, sweet pepper, some lightly steamed apple and pear, banana, mango, and a chip.

When I say 'had' I mean I've offered it to him. Some probably went straight on the floor, but I've found some lumps in his nappy, so some is definitely going in.

The mango was the biggest hit - he loved it!

So tell me what you're doing and how it's going...........

greensnail No she's definitely not overweight! Skinny little thing. She might be a bit plumper if she ever was still for longer than 0.3 seconds.. I discovered yesterday that she's good at sitting when she's just woken up from a nap, because for about 5 minutes she's still a bit dopey and calm and sits still. Then she wakes up and the wrigglemania begins..

IF I have another baby, then I want a calm one. Please.

greensnail · 07/08/2009 11:14

i've been thinking the same thing kiwi - the products could also be used by adults on a low salt diet. i reckon we could make afortune

KiwiPanda · 07/08/2009 11:15

Snail & Panda products it is. I can see the cutesy little cartoon packaging now...

greensnail · 07/08/2009 11:17

we need tointroduce them kiwipanda - i'm still tryng to persuade dd off her bum.

while we're talking about salt - i was thinking of making yorkshire puddings tonight -does anyone know if they rise ok if you leave out the salt. something at the back of my mind is saying they need some salt in, but it could just be my mil's voice!!

littleboyblue · 07/08/2009 11:17

greensnail They are Tesco own brand ones. In a purple box, Italian Original Breadsticks. I got the mini ones, they were 64p I think. Normal sized ones were 10p cheaper, but the smaller they are, the easier they'll fit in change bag.

When should we look out for 'Snail & Panda' products? Wanna get a move on girlies, this is my last baby......

greensnail · 07/08/2009 11:18

oh yes, it would be great - i can see th tv adverts with the adventures of snail and panda!

greensnail · 07/08/2009 11:20

might have to sneak into tesco without dh knowing then lbb, he hates the place!

Hulla · 07/08/2009 11:44

Morning all!

DD had a breadstick for breakfast today. I got some "good for you" or "better for you" ones from Asda. I'll check them in a minute (feeding dd to sleep ).

She also had two dried apricots (makes yum yum noises when she eats those), porridge (didn't touch it, I'm not bothering with it for a while) and two green beans from last night. The green beans were just to keep her quiet while I made some bread.

greensnail I don't see why not, I don't put much salt in my bread and it rises fine. You could try a small batch?

I made sugar-free banana cake last night. It was vile and didn't rise at all. No idea what went wrong. I thought sugar would be for flavour not effect!

VandT · 07/08/2009 13:02

Definitely agree that its worth adapting things to work for your family greensnail, I had hoped that like DS she would do a bit of spoon feeding as well but she is adamant that she won't and baby-led all the way! In terms of bottles, she definitely lets you know when its milk she wants and I am trying to push her feeds back. Its not a big worry just impatience on my part I guess.

On the other issue, I'm really interested to see that some babies are happy to sit in their high chair and eat for up to an hour... DD is done in about 15 mins and starts sweeping her tray clean after that or desperately trying to climb out. Maybe thats another reason she wants milk, needs more time to eat more...

KiwiPanda · 07/08/2009 14:29

VandT I reckon they also just had hungry days and non-hungry days (I'd say just like us, except I don't think I've ever had a non-hungry day ). DD isn't that keen today, didn't want any breakfast and wasn't super keen on lunch. But that was probably my fault because I took her out to a playgroup and bought her back a bit late so she was really tired.

littleboyblue · 07/08/2009 15:16

What are you offering as a 'meal'? Is it a little bit of veg, potato, main item? What are lo's having for dinner tonight?

greensnail · 07/08/2009 15:57

yes, dd has just what we have. Tonight we're having sausage, potato and veg, so DD will have a little bit of each thing we're having. Probably followed by some fruit.

Hulla · 07/08/2009 16:48

Well we had lunch out today and guess who came over to chat to dd in her high chair? Jimmy Saville! How bizarre is that. I felt a bit sad though, he looked really old (in his tracksuit & gold jewellery!).

Anyway, I had a tuna and cheese pannini which I shared with dd. I just split the pannini so the filling cooled and she loved it. She also had a go at the salad. Has anyone given cherry tomatoes? I didn't know whether to offer them (halved) so left it.

DH is cooking tonight so probably pasta or chilli.

I bought some Innocent smoothies yesterday (on offer) and froze them in ice cube trays so dd could have some "ice cream". I thought they'd be good for teething. I put some in ice lolly moulds too and dh and I ate them last night. Yummy! DD attempted to suck on one but didn't seem to like holding the cold lolly to do it.

greensnail · 07/08/2009 17:00

ooh, that's quite exciting hulla - hope DD wasn't scared of him

DD has had halfed cherry tomatoes before when we're out. At home she loves big tomatoes as they're much easier to hold. They seem to be one of her favourites - she always eats them first.

Chulita · 07/08/2009 21:46

Just marking my spot, I was going to write but DH just told me to get off mumsnet and go to bed cos apparently I'm "taking the piss and delivering it in milk bottles"... so I'll be back to say something a bit more relevant tomorrow.

BelleWatling · 08/08/2009 01:16

KiwiPanda / Greensnail I too am guilty of shoving breast in DS face if it's just too hard sometimes, he is too grumpy and I need a quiet sit down. He never says no. I also give him a breastfeed (and a breadstick) still sometimes in lieu of a full meal if we are eating something unsuitable or if he sleeps through the big meal. Am I a bad mother?! He is 9m and surely should be on tea/coke/carbonated water by now!

He is having lots of fun chomping away at food (chicken, salad and roast potatoes tonight) and I wondered if it's time to introduce some (smooth) peanut butter. No allergies in the family and he's been exposed in utero and in breast milk with no visible consequences - what do you guys reckon?

littleboyblue · 08/08/2009 07:22

Thanks for meal input there. Last night, ds2 had sweet potato, baby corn and a little bit of fish. Well, I say had, I mean threw on the floor!

The little monkey was up all night and fed too which he hasn't done since 3 months. Dp isn't completely happy with finger foods as exclusive, so I've agreed to meet in the middle, offer finger foods alongside a puree dish, at least until he gets used to finger foods.

KiwiPanda · 08/08/2009 08:32

BelleWatljng I don't think that could possibly hurt, I've done it myself sometimes. After all, bm has more calories in it than most if not all of the stuff we offer them!

DH gave DD her breakfast while I had a lie-in, bliss. Apparently she demolished a plum, some watermelon (her favourite) and some banana. She's a fruit-fiend.

greensnail · 08/08/2009 10:59

BelleWatling i've been intending to give DD smooth peanut butter for a while but I keep forgetting to buy some. I don't like it myself but am making a point of giving DD all the foods I don't like (she loves them all!). I've eaten nuts while feeding and pg with no probs, and you have to expose them at some point don't you.

Chulita · 08/08/2009 16:21

DD's had peanut butter for a while now and she loves it - a word of warning though, it's very messy. It gets really stuck in her fingers and it's night on impossible to wipe off and of course if she's tired it's in her hair/eyes/nostrils. It's worth it though just to watch her enjoying it!
DD is on a non-hungry day but she's recovering from the lurgy so I'm just trying to give her liquids, back on bm again. She still feeds 2/3 times a night so she makes up then what she misses out on in the day.
How have people found tuna? I keep meaning to try it and forgetting

littleboyblue · 08/08/2009 17:29

I was going to buy peanut butter today, but forgot!
Ds1 didn't like it. Or maybe in hindsight it was the toast or bread I'd put it on. He has just turned 2 and still won't eat bread.

I've not tried tuna either, but might in the week. Ds1's favourite lunch is tuna pasta with tomato puree and basil.

Today, the finger food has gone rubbish, but the puree pretty good! Aaarrrrrrggghhhhhh I wish he'd stop messing about and just decide how he wants to eat
He did have some butternut squash finger style and loved it.

greensnail · 08/08/2009 20:25

DD loves tuna, another one of her faves

She had her first prawns this evening which she absolutely loved. She seemed to be having a really hungry day today. Was wingeing for food and then started eating paper about 40mins before we usually eat, so I put her in the high chair and gave her some food early. Then she carried on and joined us for our food. She was eating for over an hour and a half and had loads - she must have eaten as much as I did!

KiwiPanda · 08/08/2009 20:33

No tuna for DD as she - and I and DH - are vegetarian. She discovered avocado today and scoffed loads of it, DH made quesadillas for dinner which she loved, particularly picking up whole kidney beans and throwing them at me or on the floor.. She was really grumpy at first but ended up eating for about 45 minutes and laughing at me pulling faces. She's not a big laugher so I always feel really proud if I can get a series of chuckles out of her!

greensnail · 08/08/2009 21:19

Glad she's a bit more cheerful KiwiPanda

KiwiPanda · 08/08/2009 21:31

She is, hooray! I reckon she just likes having both me and DH around. Or just him, ha ha...
