Anyone just started, or about to start, BLW? Care to join me?

Jojay · 03/05/2009 16:46

DS2 is 27 weeks and from last week, is now joining us a mealtimes.

I tried spoonfeeding for a few days but he didn't seem keen, so I tried him with some roasted veg and he was well away. So BLW it is for us.

But I did purees for DS1 2 years ago, so BLW is new to me.

So far he's had roasted sweet potato, carrot, aubergine, courgette, sweet pepper, some lightly steamed apple and pear, banana, mango, and a chip.

When I say 'had' I mean I've offered it to him. Some probably went straight on the floor, but I've found some lumps in his nappy, so some is definitely going in.

The mango was the biggest hit - he loved it!

So tell me what you're doing and how it's going...........

I sit DD in her baby nest in the kitchen with a wooden spoon and a tupperware tub/lid and she's happy as larry til she gets her leftovers. I only give her stuff we had the night before or philly on toast - poor lamb doesn't get much variety!

ChocOrange05 · 25/06/2009 22:19

DS eats leftovers too - or scrambled egg which is super easy!

Tonight for dinner DH and I had this, we mad enough for DS too and I cooked through the scallops. Scallops are ok though right?

Unbuffy · 26/06/2009 10:53

Hi guys, thanks for the advice! Didn't try anything yesterday as dd was r e v o l t i n g and best left alone! but we've just done mango which got gummed to death (until she got bored anyway) Going to try carrot / broccolli a bit later. very excited... . How long until yorkshire puddings (dh's favourite - he reckons she should be weaned on them more or less exclusively)?

btw, the dreaded hv was making mutterings about eggs, shellfish, tomatoes and othernice things until baby is one. is this right or should i treat it as i've treated most things she says...?

Chulita · 26/06/2009 14:13

Eggs are fine at 6 months if they're well cooked - I just read the feeding part of that 'birth to five' book and that confirmed it. I know honey's not good til 1 but can't comment on shellfish. Eggs are fantastic though, nutritious and so quick!

greensnail · 26/06/2009 17:04

My DH would also wean DD exclusively on yorkshire pudding, sausage and onion gravy given the chance. I think yorkshire pudding should be fine from 6 months - just watch how much salt you put in them.

DD and I went to pizza express, just the two of us this luchtime as i was feeling slightly extravagent and needed to treat myself before a mammoth food shop. It was fab, we shared some dough balls and then she had a snooze while i ate my pizza - so civilised. Its great that I always have someone I can have a girly lunch with now

KiwiPanda · 26/06/2009 20:17

Another question - especially for Chulita and others with babies who have been BLW for a while now - when did they learn to chew/ swallow stuff? DD has only really eaten the odd morsel of solid stuff by accident, and is still at the sucking hummus/yoghurt off things stage. Just wondering how long, roughly, I should expect before she will be able to get stuff to the back of her mouth? Bits she nibbles off just tend to fall out at the mo.

I know this is all perfectly normal, BTW, just wondering when I might see the next stage!

pushmepullyou · 26/06/2009 20:22

Can't see a problem with Yorkshire pudding or well cooked scallops to be honest. We're going for pretty much anything that was OK during pregnancy (so no mould ripened cheese, rare steak, lightly cooked eggs or raw shellfish), no honey and generally watching the salt (my biggest worry as I am a terrible addict ).

Greensnail, I love the girly lunches too! These days we mostly lunch to be honest, its doing my post pregnancy figure no good at all! i just thank god that she's eating half of it now!

Samba (DD - I feel she needs a name!) has really got into food this week. Today she's had 1 fresh apricot, 6 strawberries, 2 hipp's ruskits, a piece of frittata, peas (very funny ), yoghurt, fromage frais, raisin wheats, cheesy pitta bread and a small taste of carrot cake .

She's not drinking as much milk now, which makes me feel a bit . I can't believe my little girl's growing up so fast already!

Chulita · 26/06/2009 20:27

It took DD a couple of weeks to learn to swallow stuff like toast. Some things I think she swallowed by mistake (broccoli, banana, steamed apple), they're so slippery I reckon they just fell down her throat! She's back on the sucking thing though, we're regressing She spent lunch time sucking all the cheese off her toast, dropping it and fussing, watching me load it back up and off we went again. Shepherd's pie went down well though, first time she's had minced beef. The mash was quite stodgy but at least she could have a good old squidge of it. And she's totally gone off apple a week ago she couldn't get enough of it!

pushmepullyou · 26/06/2009 20:44

My DD does the sucking thing too sometimes, but I think it is because she prefers the cheese to the toast. It doesn't seem to be just coincidence that every time she has it I end up sweeping chewed bare toast crusts off the floor!

She also goes on and off things too. Was right of strawberries last week .

Jojay · 27/06/2009 08:23

Kiwi - Ds properly started swallowing things at about 7 1/2 months, as opposed to swallowing the odd chunk more by luck than judgement.

I gave him soft things like mash or risotto and by that stage he had the dexterity to scoop it up an dsome would go in.

Now he's 8 months and he can manage things like bread and pasta pretty well, and will eat a fair amount in one sitting.

Hello all - gosh all these babies are eating well.

I have not been around for a few days. Some weeks having two under 3's just seems like so much hard work - especially when DD1 is under the weather and becoming an expert whinger (sp?)

DD2 is very much still sucking stuff - and some things must be working their way through as her poo has changed! We have tried rice cakes with Philly and breadsticks with houmous(sp?) today - her face is such a picture when new tastes appear.

She also had a bit of a suck at some chicken today - part of out chicken fajitas - perhaps a bit spicy

Just waiting until she reaches the stage of actually being able to control the whole process - not the mess but being able to eat...

ChocOrange05 · 28/06/2009 19:07

Hello all

DS is eating loads now, although we are not really BLW-ing in true form . DS wants to be spoon fed - cue screaming if I don't put a spoon to his mouth - so its more efficient in terms of getting food in. But I try to encourage him to do some himself too - I always put some food on his placemat and give him the spoon when he wants it.

I was very proud today when I cut some cherries in half and he picked them up using the pincer grip and ate them! I think this is pretty impressive at 7.5m!

DS is also drinking from his Doidy cup on his own (he just needs help putting his hands on the handles).

Oh, my boy IS super talented in the food area but he doesn't do much else - roll over, crawl, recite the alphabet. Hmmm, sitting on his bum eating - just like mum and dad!!

lobsters · 28/06/2009 19:19

Hello, hope I can join you. We started DD with BLW today, she's 25 weeks and had some banana, broccoli and carrot. The banana and broccoli went down well, she was less keen on the carrot. The broccoli went everywhere, I was amazed where she could get it. There was a bit of gagging on the broccoli and some serious chocking on the banana when she sucked off a bigger than expected bit. Overall it went quite well, I'm not sure what we're going to do tomorrow we're out most of the day.

Have just found another reason to love DH even more, just discovered that MIL has been nagging him for weeks as to why we've not started weaning yet, but he lets it go in one ear and out of the other, so just ignored it and didn't pass on the message. He's also tried to explin BLW to her and she thinks it's ridiculous, and DD will just choke. She was telling DH some tale of horror about how he chocked when he was little. However, DH thinks he remembers this incident and he was eating a boiled sweet at the time so

greensnail · 28/06/2009 19:35

Hey all and welcome lobsters.

Well DD and I met Gill Rapley and Tracey Murkett today. Very exciting. Was great to hear them speak about BLW. I told Gill how DD doesn't like to pick up food when i'm nearby but will hold out her hand for me to pass something, and she didn't seem to think this was a problem so I can tell DH to stop telling me off for this

Yesterday she was exploring a corn on the cob but i didn't think she'd manage to eat any - i struggle with my full set of teeth. Today i found several pieces of corn in the nappy, so proud of her!

Lobsters, MIL will change her tune when she sees DD tucking in. You could always wind her up and tell her DH would never have choked if she'd not given him purees

Chulita · 28/06/2009 19:54

DD is back on strawberries after going off them for a couple of weeks but today was a bit of a failure food-wise. She ate a strawberry and dribbled on some lettuce for tea, had nothing for lunch and weetabix for breakfast along with only 2 milk feeds despite me trying boob, bottle and cup to get it in her...we'll see how tonight goes!
Corn on the cob is ace! DH won't let DD have it with corn on though, he loves it and isn't good at sharing!!

greensnail · 28/06/2009 20:03

Aww that's mean. I never thought I could share dough balls until DD came along - my friends are shocked and impressed by the change in me

Dysgu · 28/06/2009 20:10

We went to pub for lunch with family today. DD2 impressed my mum, dad and both sisters as she sat in an Antilop high chair and worked her way through cucumber, tomato, some bread and a chip.

She has been sitting in the BabyDan chair when at home - unless it is just the two of us home when we sometimes sit on the living room floor and she uses the Bumbo - but seemed really happy in the Antilop. I think we might bring the Antilop down from the loft...

lobsters · 29/06/2009 18:00

Day 2 of BLW, DD had toast (not that keen), strawberry, cucumber and banana. Cucumber biggest hit of the day, she did like strawberry, but it was a little over ripe and got very slippery to hold.

Bizarrely she's also very keen to drink water from her sippy cup, I'm not sure if it's hot and she wants water, or the spout is a good teething toy as she does seem to chomp on it and a lot of the water goes down her front.

Jojay · 29/06/2009 20:16

Dysgu - I have a BabyDan and an Antilop too

I used the BabyDan with DS1 (purees) but I'm using the Antilop this time. Ds2 seemed more comfortable in it in the early days when he wasn't sitting up too brilliantly, though it's probably not an issue now.

But I like having a tray that I can clip off and give a good clean, and it saves my table cloth

Yay Lobster, sounds like you had a good day!

greensparkles could she be teething?

pushmepullyou · 30/06/2009 11:37

greensparkes I think strawberry allergies most often present with a rash around the mouth. Could be teething or a mild bug?

DD had a similar fortnight of green poo and nappy rash and it just cleared up on its own eventually.

greensparkles DS also has his first nappy rash atm but its coupled with chewig on everything (including me!) and some general grumpiness at times so I think its teething. I think I read somewhere teething can cause nappy rash. Oh and a snotty nose which DS also has - it seems worse when eating too .
